The action combines the sending of aid with the will to denounce and raise awareness: “It is also a way to mobilize people and pressure governments to act,” they explain.

This initiative is part of the campaign "Public Square and Community Center in Can Pesquet, Managed by the People," launched this month by the Son Sardina and La Garriga People's Assembly and the Son Sardina Residents' Association, with the support of other local organizations. This latest mobilization continues a long-standing demand from the neighborhood, which has been calling for public spaces for community gatherings and organizing for years. According to the organizers, the lack of facilities particularly hinders the activities of groups that promote local culture, the festive calendar, and the defense of social and labor interests.

According to Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (the Spanish National Lottery), the winning ticket was validated at lottery outlet number 60,205, located at 8 Miquel Costa i Llobera Street and run by Pep Vallori, who has been at the helm of the business for nearly 50 years. "We are very happy, because it brings prestige to us," the owner of the establishment points out. Vallori notes that this is not the first time they have distributed a prize of this magnitude, recalling a couple of prizes of €1,000,000 or more over the years. "We are experts at distributing these kinds of prizes," he remarks. However, Vallori still doesn't know who the winner is. "It could be someone from Pollença, Palma, or who knows; lots of people come here for excursions or walks," he points out. "We only know that they placed three bets of €1.50 each," he explains.

Residents of Santa Maria file objections against a lithium battery plant on rural land

https://en.arabalears.cat/society/residents-of-santa-maria-file-objections-against-lithium-battery-plant-rural-land_1_5678178.html

The Friends of the Coanegra Valley Association has filed objections against the proposed second lithium-ion battery energy storage plant on a rural plot in Santa Maria del Camí. The group rejects the initiative and questions whether it can be processed as a project of strategic industrial interest. The protest comes after the Regional Ministry of Business, Self-Employment, and Energy opened the public consultation period for the application for this designation and the authorization of the project, called Bess Santa Maria. The association believes the facility lacks the public interest that would justify this administrative treatment. According to the association, it is a "private and speculative activity with the sole purpose of profit," lacking a production process, stable job creation, and integration within the local energy plan. For this reason, they argue that it does not meet the requirements to be considered of strategic interest. The group also maintains that the project cannot be located on rural land. They point out that legislation only exceptionally permits this type of installation for industrial facilities linked to renewable energy production, a category in which, according to their interpretation, the planned plant does not fit. Furthermore, they believe the initiative implies an inappropriate use of common rural land, which—they emphasize—should be designated for agricultural, livestock, or forestry activities. In this regard, they assert that the installation is incompatible with the urban planning classification of the area and that, in any case, it would require a Declaration of General Interest and the mandatory territorial report from the Consell de Mallorca (Island Council of Mallorca). The organization also denounces that the project encroaches on the municipal powers of the Santa Maria del Camí City Council regarding urban planning. They indicate that the initiative lacks any favorable report and has not been validated by the municipal governing board or the mayor. According to the association, the proposal contradicts the municipality's political and urban planning guidelines and violates the principle of local autonomy, in addition to failing to respect the criteria for citizen participation and transparency in the selection of locations for energy infrastructure. In this regard, they denounce the fact that the plant's location has not been consulted or negotiated with neighborhood associations or local institutional representatives. Environmental and safety risks

Among the arguments presented in their objections, the group also warns of the potential environmental and safety risks associated with this type of facility. They explain that the potential leaks of toxic gases or liquids in the event of a thermal failure, which could affect vegetation, soil, and aquifers, have not been adequately assessed. The association believes the project violates the precautionary principle, as it would be located in an area with no prior industrial use, which, in their opinion, would entail a significant transformation of the environment. They also emphasize that the proposed plot has high ecological value and forms part of the agricultural and landscape mosaic located between the municipalities of Consell and Santa Maria del Camí. Finally, the group warns that lithium-ion batteries carry potential risks, such as explosions, difficult-to-extinguish fires resulting from thermal runaways, the emission of toxic gases harmful to human and animal health, and possible chemical contamination of waterways.

Perhaps having lived between different cultures and identities, even though she didn't choose it, has given her a maturity and an ability to analyze the world that is unusual for her age. Her story is reminiscent of the "three rebellious turns" that Maria Mercè Marçal spoke of in her famous poem. When asked where she's from, she doesn't have a simple answer. Her identity shifts between places, languages, and cultures: the Amazigh of her family and the Mallorcan of the street. She was born in Algeciras, but grew up in Mallorca, in Campos, where she has spent her entire life. "When people ask me where we're from, I don't have a single answer," she explains. "I was born in Andalusia, but I've lived my whole life in Mallorca. I learned to speak Catalan here, my friends are here, I went to high school here… basically, I grew up here."

At the last meeting of the advisory council—comprised of technicians, institutional representatives, social organizations, and experts—criteria and proposals were shared to make human activity possible while conserving one of Bunyola's most emblematic natural areas, as reported by the Town Hall. The future land use plan must allow for balanced management that protects the ecological, cultural, and social values of the Comuna and ensures that any activity carried out is done with respect and responsibility. The document's objective is to guarantee responsible and sustainable use. "The Comuna is a collective heritage that defines us as a community, and regulating its uses is a way to ensure that we can continue to enjoy it without losing what makes it unique," stated the Mayor of Bunyola, Marian Serralta. The mayor believes that to develop the land use plan and "bring common sense" to the use of the Comuna (communal land), it is necessary to "listen to all perspectives, to protect the environment and make it compatible with the life of the municipality." Esquerra Oberta de Bunyola believes that the governing team is carrying out a "whitewashing" campaign with the Comuna Advisory Council.

For its part, Esquerra Oberta de Bunyola (EOB) has criticized the governing team for only convening the Commune's Advisory Council once during the entire legislative term, despite continuous interventions. "The PP's proposal is pure empty political marketing," sources from the Bunyola-based party stated. "We believe that using a collegiate body to carry out a whitewashing campaign is, at the very least, in bad taste," they denounced. "The Advisory Council should serve as a consultative body and a key element in the management of the communal forest, not be used at the discretion of the governing team to serve their media interests," EOB pointed out.

The defendants—seven French nationals and one Swiss national—admitted that on August 14, 2023, they went to a hotel room in Magaluf where one of the victim's companions was staying.
