Celestí Alomar is, without a doubt, one of those people. We owe ARA Balears, above all, extraordinary generosity. As a member of the editorial board from the beginning, we always found in him an attentive gaze, sharp intelligence, and a willingness to help that was never forced or self-interested. His advice was good because it stemmed from a deep and sensible observation of reality. He also gifted us ideas, topics, questions, and analyses as lucid as they were accurate. And he did so with a naturalness that made his contribution even more valuable.

Talking about the cost of healthcare for tourists forces us to walk a fine and delicate border line. And, after the police charges of 26-J, the narrative of tourist saturation has been sidelined in the media by another debate much more comfortable for Marga Prohens' Government. It is important not to lose focus, because the president is one of the main people responsible for responding to the problems that the tourism model generates in the daily lives of the citizens of the Balearic Islands. The day after one of the most massive protests ever seen in the Islands, Prohens has not felt the need to face the situation, nor to give explanations about the lack of management, nor to confront her unfulfilled promises. The president has spoken about the charges, has demanded explanations from the Spanish government delegate, Alfonso Rodríguez, and has remarked that she respects the right to demonstrate, as if that were not a given.

For decades, a large part of the islanders assumed that tourism was much more than an economic activity. It was the foundation of prosperity, the guarantee that the Balearic Islands could offer opportunities and a good standard of living. With many nuances, because the benefits have never been distributed equitably, the majority accepted that the costs of the model were offset by the well-being it generated. For a long time, however, this balance has been broken. We are paying the price for what has been considered a success, but this price should not be paid eternally, nor can it become increasingly expensive.

It is the most basic limit any society has. And the Balearic Islands have started this summer closer to that limit than in recent years. Water reserves have dropped again. Menorca registers the worst levels. Almost fifty municipalities – 47 out of the 67 that exist – entered the summer in a state of alert or pre-alert for drought. The Government itself admits that climate change will make droughts longer, rainfall more irregular, and aquifer recharge more difficult. These are not catastrophic forecasts, they are official data.

"Why couldn't I save my grandmother's house?" she wondered. Her lament could be that of thousands of people from other neighborhoods and many towns and cities in the Islands. Why are more and more families unable to preserve the houses that have been part of their history?

The extraordinary regularization of immigrants has become a new front of political confrontation between the State government and various right-wing autonomous executives, including that of the Balearic Islands. The debate, legitimate in a democracy, is today a war of attrition that runs the risk of dehumanizing a reality that affects thousands of people. In the Islands, it is estimated that more than 30,000 people could benefit from this process. These are not abstract figures, they are lives that depend, to a large extent, on being able to escape administrative irregularity.

There have been several coastal laws in Spain, and it can even be said that the one from 1969, during Franco's time, had a certain conservationist intent. Above all, because it created a great concept: public maritime-terrestrial domain, a strip that varies in extension according to different criteria, and which consecrates the first meters of the coast as an inviolable asset.

The far right is playing with fire. It does so deliberately when it singles out a segment of the population—in this case, the Muslim population—as a source of conflict, a cultural threat, and supposed social degradation. Fueling Islamophobia is an exercise in colossal political irresponsibility, because the consequences of this discourse are not merely rhetorical: they directly impact coexistence, cohesion, and social peace in the Balearic Islands.

The expansion works at Palma Airport are no secret. Aena can't hide them, because they are visible, noisy, and, for many passengers, increasingly burdensome. Anyone who has recently passed through Son Sant Joan Airport has seen how journeys are lengthening and how the comfort promised by the airport operator is being postponed to an uncertain future. Aena cannot hide the construction. What it does try to conceal is the objective that seems to lie behind these works. The airport company insists that the expansion is not motivated by a desire to accommodate more passengers. But the figures contradict this. A report by Aena itself, prepared less than five years ago, predicted that in the most extreme scenario, Son Sant Joan would reach 33 million passengers in 2026. Reality has accelerated the timeline: in 2025, a year earlier, Palma Airport had already significantly exceeded this figure. Denying that the expansion is due to an increase in capacity is, at the very least, implausible.
