The 'overbooking' of the 'overbooking': 'Game Over'

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/the-overbooking-of-the-overbooking-game-over_129_5713679.html

When a year before the pandemic, the friend Àlex Dioscórides directed the magnificent documentary ‘Overbooking’, which already highlighted some of the indicators that make us a collapsed island, I believe that neither he nor all the people who saw it were able to imagine that a day would come, just like this start of the season, where not only would politicians have done nothing to reverse the situation, but we would find ourselves with a situation of overbooking of overbooking. If the concept of overbooking refers to overbooking of overbooking I mean the conversion of this over-selling into a permanent strategy, thanks to which collapse is no longer the exception, but the norm, even beyond the high season, as these days. We are not only talking about airlines or hotels, where business overbooking used to occur, but also about tourist rental houses, car rentals and a long etcetera of tourist services and products – also cycle tourism, and how! –, which indirectly generate saturation in the services that we residents need – and pay for –: roads, public transport and, indirectly, health and education, pressured by the population growth that the overbooking of overbooking. That the overbooking of overbooking goes beyond the “sensations” or “caprice” of residents was recently confirmed by the Government itself, when the Forum of Civil Society forced it to make public the results of the resident opinion poll, which indicates that the satisfaction level with tourism had fallen from 71% in 2018 to only 42% in 2024. For the first time, the overbooking of overbooking is causing a more than significant critical mass that is beginning to question the idea of ‘tourism is untouchable, because it's what feeds us’… 77.2% of residents directly blame tourism for the increase in housing prices; 55.4% for the rise in the cost of basic goods and services; 65.5% perceive an excessive saturation of streets, shops, and public transport; 62.3% believe that tourism degrades natural resources and the landscape.A few days ago, on a trip to Sóller, I was able to experience firsthand an overbooking that has been exceeded for some time, where the recipes of politicians, both local and regional, are limited to wanting to "manage better" the flow of cars, but without anyone daring to say that what needs to be done is to reduce, limit, decrease... Sóller is the metaphor for the overbooking of overbooking: living in a postcard town and not being able to leave your home. I would like to see in a few years studies on the increase in respiratory illnesses due to the increase in vehicle traffic, as it is quite evident that this must already be affecting the inhabitants of the municipality in terms of public health, as well as other daily headaches.

This text enjoyed broad consensus at the time, including the support of the People's Party (PP) on many points, as had previously occurred with the Law on Mass Graves. It's hard to accept that laws that come late, but which nevertheless seek to provide truth, justice, and reparations, as the memory movement has always demanded, can be overturned so easily. I also find it difficult to accept these changes in position by parties that aspire to govern for a social majority, in less than a decade.

Several years after the pandemic, which accelerated the digitalization of society, children are arriving at our schools unable to even maintain eye contact, neither with each other nor with an adult. This is especially true for low-income families, because although screen use affects us all regardless of our circumstances, these families face the greatest difficulties in accessing educational and parenting resources for their children that don't involve the 'easy' solution of staying home and plugging into an increasingly complex screen—be it television, mobile phone, or other devices, thanks to the influence of the internet and social media. These children, like many teenagers, have socialized more with screens than with their peers, which would give them a certain 'mastery' of digital tools were it not for their lack of maturity for responsible use.

The general feeling is that, in the best-case scenario, things won't get worse: in terms of inequality, employment, housing… global governance, mental health… The latest episode, during these days of Christmas festivities, is the forced eviction instigated by Albiol in Badalona. An inhumane eviction—like those we've also experienced here, in Can Rova, Ibiza—of people, many of them employed, but unable to afford a roof over their heads because of the 'freedom' of the market.

Global life expectancy has increased by almost 40 years in the last century alone. It stands at around 73 years on average worldwide, and between 81 and 82 years in the European context. At the other extreme, we find sub-Saharan African countries where it is difficult to surpass 55. Life expectancy is, therefore, a reflection of inequalities on a global scale, but also an indicator of welfare policies. Because even in the developed world, not everything is set in stone. It is assumed that, now a quarter of the way through the 21st century, things should continue to evolve positively, but the United States, where life expectancy had already stagnated and is now beginning to decline, is a reminder that we cannot take anything for granted.

A few days ago, the Inca City Council presented the results of a study that I had the honor of coordinating through the Intercoopera Foundation. Its objective was to measure the weight of the social economy within the overall economic and labor activity of the capital of the Raiguer region. It also aimed to highlight that, in addition to caring for the environment and people, social economy initiatives contribute significantly to the local economy, even if they do so discreetly, quietly, but with a strong commitment to the community in which they operate. One of the shortcomings of this sector, which lacks a specific economic activity code (CNAE) because it can operate across many different economic sectors, is the lack of real and effective data on its impact on island society. Therefore, the research we conducted in Inca, as a pilot project, provides us with insights not only into what the administrations should be doing regarding statistical information and data availability to understand the true situation. It also indicates that there is much more to it than we could have imagined, even though there is no major plan or public policy to promote it. In fact, at the regional level, neither the first Master Plan for the Social Economy, approved in 2018, nor the current one, seems to be a priority for either the previous or current government, especially considering their funding and available administrative resources, which are entirely insufficient to effectively boost the sector, as other regions have done.

In the days and weeks that followed, many people from all walks of life from the Balearic Islands joined together to lend a hand to so many who had lost everything, in a truly commendable act of solidarity. This year should serve as a lesson, given that extreme weather events linked to climate change are and will continue to be increasingly intense and virulent, as we witnessed in Sant Llorenç in October 2019 and in Ibiza a few weeks ago.

I never cease to be amazed at our tremendous capacity to swallow the 21st-century fascism represented by Donald Trump and, in the process, to normalize what just a century ago led to one of the worst episodes in human history. The pathetic image of European leaders at the Trump-Putin summit on Ukraine is evidence that the EU finds it harder to establish its own position than to remain subservient to the United States, no matter how much the latter may run counter to European interests, as has also been seen with the tariffs.

These are not pleasant times, when reality seems to align with the most dystopian scenarios of science fiction. Uninhabitable worlds in which we reproduce the worst episodes in the history of humanity, including genocide and the persecution of certain racial groups. Someone always needs to be blamed for the things that happen to us and that we don't like, and it will always be easier to blame immigrants than billionaires, because the latter have the economic power, propaganda, and the purchase of goodwill, which is no small feat.
