UOB Ensenyament has demanded the resignation of the Director General of Teaching Staff, Joana Maria Cabrer, for her management of the Sectoral Table of Education (MSE). In a statement, the union assures that "the state in which the Sectoral Table of Education currently finds itself is deplorable" and states that, during the last session convened, on June 1, it became clear that the representatives of the Ministry of Education and Universities "give no value to the Table, to the contributions and demands of the unions and, by extension, to the demands of the workers".

The Beato Luis Belda University Center, affiliated with CEU San Pablo, has inaugurated the academic project in an event at the Son Serra Parera estate, which was attended by institutional collaborators, the healthcare sector, future professors, and representatives of the Administration. Among others, the President of the Government, Marga Prohens; the Minister of Education and Universities, Antoni Vera; the Minister of Labor, Public Function, and Social Dialogue, Catalina Cabrer; the Minister of Health, Manuela García; the Mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez; and the Rector of the UIB, Jaume Carot, were present. The ceremony served to officially launch an initiative that starts with the objective of establishing a university campus specialized in Health Sciences in Mallorca, which will begin operating with the first class of Medicine already filled.

Eight out of ten teachers in the Balearic Islands who participated in a consultation promoted by the Independent, Autonomous and United Union (SIAU) are in favour of calling an indefinite strike in the education sector. According to the results of the survey made public this Monday by the union, 80.8% of participants support this option, while 11.7% oppose it and 7.5% state they do not have a defined position.

The teacher examinations in the Balearic Islands are progressing in a scenario that many applicants describe as “disconcerting” and which the data strongly confirms: in various specialities and islands, the pass rates for the first test (theoretical + learning situation) are extremely low and, in many cases, insufficient to cover all the announced positions. Those who pass the first test move on to the presentation test, and those who advance, to the examination phase.

The PAU 2026 has started this Tuesday with 4,950 students from the Balearic Islands determined to achieve the grade that allows them to access their desired higher education studies. The usual nerves of the first day have been combined with the smiles of those facing the exams with confidence on a day marked by one of this year's main innovations: the implementation of radio frequency detectors to combat academic fraud. "For the moment, we have not detected any," explained the Vice-Rector for Students of the UIB, Cristina Moreno, who detailed that these devices will circulate in all classrooms at the different examination points, although not necessarily during all tests. "We must bear in mind that students know that mobile phones must remain switched off," she added.

María Pombo, one of the influencers most followed in Spain, has been the protagonist of two of the questions on the Spanish exam for the Selectividad (university entrance exam) taken by students from the Balearic Islands this Tuesday, the first day of the PAU tests in the Archipelago. Specifically, the content creator appears in the question where students are asked to identify and explain the syntactic relationships established between the clauses in the following fragment: "The controversy surrounding María Pombo regarding reading has demonstrated the capacity that social networks have today to fix a debate in public conversation".

University entrance exams in 2026 will take place on June 9, 10, and 11. Students take the selectivity exam after having selected in an ordered manner which degrees they would like to pursue. This list of preferences is created during the pre-enrollment process, and places are assigned according to the order of grades. That is to say: if there is a higher volume of demand than supply for a specific degree, only those with the highest grades will be able to access those studies. If they do not reach the desired grade, students can enroll in another of the options on the preference list.

“You’re almost there. You’ve completed a demanding high school program, and now the most important thing is to trust yourselves and arrive with a clear head.” This is the main recommendation made by Fèlix Coll, a former student of IES Biel Martí de Ferreries and one of the students with the highest grades in the 2025 Selectividad (university entrance exam), to the students taking it this year. He achieved a score of 9.35 without weighting and is now studying Electronic, Industrial, and Automatic Engineering at the UIB. Coll offers advice for facing the three days of evaluations in the University Access Test (PAU), which this year will be taken by 4,950 students from educational centers in the Balearic Islands on June 2, 3, and 4. The figure is slightly higher than last year, when 4,860 students participated. The majority of the examinees are from Mallorca (80.9%), followed by Ibiza (9.6%), Menorca (9.1%), and Formentera (0.4%). Women continue to be the majority, with 60.2% of the total.

The UIB has asked students taking the University Entrance Exams (PAU) this week to arrive on campus well in advance and to prioritize the use of public transport. Metro and bus frequencies can be consulted on the portals of the Transport of the Balearic Islands (TIB) and the Palma Municipal Transport Company (EMT).

The trade unions CCOO, UGT and STEI Intersindical have announced the postponement of the strike for 0-3 year olds' education scheduled for this Tuesday, June 2. The organizations explain that the decision has been made "out of strict responsibility" and to guarantee the "legal protection of workers".

Lara de la Torre is a Canary teacher who works in Early Childhood and Primary Education in the Balearic Islands and has explained in a social media video how she learned Catalan in three years, a process that culminated in obtaining the C1 certificate and which she assures is still ongoing. "First of all, reading in Catalan helped me a lot. At first it was difficult for me, but reading everything in Catalan allowed me to learn a lot of new vocabulary and also to better understand weak pronouns. Also, I joined a book club and it was incredible. Secondly, I started using Catalan for everything: at the hairdresser's, at the town hall, at the supermarket, in shops... and without shame, asking any doubt I had. And the most important thing for me has been going to class. This has helped me to have a good structure and good grammar. And this is how I learned Catalan, even though I am still learning."

The Independent, Autonomous and United Union (SIAU) has publicly denounced the events that occurred during the last meeting of the Electoral Board for the union elections of the public business entity Higher Artistic Teachings of the Balearic Islands (EASIB). This year, the union representation of the workers of the Higher Conservatory of Music of the Balearic Islands (CSMIB) and the Higher School of Dramatic Art of the Balearic Islands (ESADIB) must be renewed. SIAU is the union that initiated the electoral process after successfully challenging the prior notice submitted by another union organization.

The IB-Salut plans to incorporate nearly 200 nurses into the Community's health centers through an extraordinary integration process for staff destined for professionals with the specialty of Family and Community Nursing.

The Department of Education has announced that positions for teachers and so-called "field" positions will not be able to go through the urgent interim process and that, from now on, they will only be processed through the weekly ordinary procedure. As explained by the counselor Antoni Vera in a parliamentary commission, this is "the only way" to guarantee the control of the Catalan requirement, since the urgent system does not allow verification of the linguistic competence of the applicants. "A position for a teacher or a field position that does not have the Catalan requirement will not be given again," stated the counselor. In the words of a union representative, the urgent procedure "is a sieve" for people who do not master the language.

The Government, through Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca and the Consorci de Transports de Mallorca, will launch a special mobility plan for the University Entrance Exams (PAU), which will be held on June 2, 3, and 4. The objective of the plan is to ensure that students can reach the examination centers by public transport in a fluid and punctual manner, especially at the University of the Balearic Islands campus, where the majority of the exams are concentrated.

After half a year of deadlock, unions and employers have reactivated negotiations to move forward with the autonomous collective agreement for 0-3 year old nursery schools. The deadlock was broken this Monday in a meeting that lasted three hours and brought together the ministers of Education and Universities, Antoni Vera, and of Labour, Public Function and Social Dialogue, Catalina Cabrer, as well as the unions CCOO, UGT and STEI, and the employers' associations CECEIB and PIMEM.

The Independent, Autonomous and United Union (SIAU) has initiated a consultation with all teachers in the Balearic Islands to assess the call for an indefinite strike, in a move that aims to join the mobilizations already underway in Catalonia and the Valencian Community.

Separate students with the best grades from the rest of the students to create an Excellence Bachelor's itinerary. This is the bet of the Department of Education and Universities for the 2026-2027 academic year, which has raised alarms among pedagogues, teachers, and families, who see it as a new step towards educational segregation and a model that questions the idea of inclusive education promoted in recent years. "'Excellent' students must coexist with the rest, because society is like that: diverse," summarizes Joan Jordi Muntaner, doctor in Pedagogy from the UIB. "Contact, relationship, and exchange with diverse people enrich, because the 'good ones' are a model for the rest. Grouping students just because they have a very high performance, is that the only objective?", he asks. With this Bachelor's degree comes a new form of student segregation, which is added to the linguistic one and to the one that will occur with the implementation of the single zone in most of the municipalities of the Balearic Islands.

“As a student who has gone through Baccalaureate and Selectivity and knows the pressure to get a good grade, I find that this Excellence Baccalaureate is a good idea, especially when it comes to learning and expanding knowledge. Having the option to deepen subjects, do laboratory practices, or have the ease of doing a double modality is an opportunity that enriches you a lot and can open more doors for you for the university future, something I would have liked to have at the time”, explains Fèlix Coll, former student of IES Biel Martí de Ferreries and with one of the best grades in the 2025 Selectivity (9.35 unweighted).

“My name is Lara, I am a teacher in the Balearic Islands and I have a C1 in Catalan. After three years living here, of a lot of effort, of hours of study, of a lot of patience, of many days when I said: ‘I don’t understand anything! What are these weak pronouns?’. But finally I have the C1 in Catalan and I can say it very proudly. Has it been difficult for me? Yes. If one day I go to live abroad, will I have wasted my time? No. Demanding that teachers know the language of the place where they teach is not an obstacle: it is a sign of respect for the culture, for the families and for the children”, explains Lara, a teacher in the Balearic Islands who has obtained the C1 certificate after three years of effort and linguistic immersion.
