The Independent, Autonomous and United Union (SIAU) has reported alleged irregularities this Monday in the main process of awarding positions to interim teaching civil servants. The union assures that some applicants would have known their destination days before the Ministry of Education officially published the awards, a situation it considers contrary to the principles of equality and transparency that should govern this procedure.

The Association of Directors of Early Childhood and Primary Education of Mallorca (ADIPMA) demands an immediate rectification of the Decree-Law that regulates school canteens. In a statement, the directors particularly criticize one point of the regulation: in centers where the canteen serves more than 50 users, the school council must mandatorily appoint a teacher to supervise meals or, failing that, a member of the non-teaching staff. Furthermore, the management team becomes absolutely responsible for the canteen service. "It imposes a new unassumable burden and transfers the responsibility from the private companies responsible for the service to the management teams," they explain in a statement. "Public schools cannot become the operational support for private companies," they argue.

Just a few years ago, the UIB Faculty of Law had an image that many associated with a traditional way of understanding legal studies. The Jovellanos building, with its solid concrete and long corridors, was perceived by part of the university community as a distant space, not conducive to student life and marked by a classical academic culture. Two years after the arrival of the team led by Dr. Aina Salom at the Dean's Office, the picture is different.

Throughout the period in which doctors have been on strike against the Ministry's Statute, IB-Salut has maintained a constant attitude of not offering its own monitoring data on the impact of the mobilizations on the medical staff. Instead of publishing official percentages on the professionals' adherence to the stoppage, the Administration has limited itself to reporting on the affected healthcare activity, detailing suspensions of consultations, diagnostic tests, and surgical interventions, as well as rescheduling derived from the situation.

The Ministry of Education and Universities has reported that this Tuesday the process will begin to assign positions to interim teachers for the 2026-2027 academic year, with an offer of 2,417 positions. This was announced by the minister, Antoni Vera, at a press conference held to detail this procedure, following the meeting held with the directors of public education in the Balearic Islands.

Now that we have finished the course, teachers and families have more time for reflection. It is necessary, because many of us teachers think we are living a great lie. It seems that the Administration has chosen to hide the true level of the institutes. Over time, and more by omission than by direct action, a standard has been set that the teaching staff unanimously consider "lowered", which devalues the degrees obtained. While school should mitigate inequalities and offer opportunities, different governments have opted to turn it into a curtain that hides reality. A fiction that covers up, especially in places like Ibiza, the drama of precarious employment and an impossible housing market; a context of growing individualism, which leads families to uprooting and disconnection from their towns and neighborhoods, as well as from their own language and culture.

The Baccalaureate of Excellence promoted by the Ministry of Education will begin next academic year with a response, for now, very unequal between islands. The new Llorenç Villalonga institute in Palma has already received 65 applications for the initially planned 60 places—which can be extended to 70—, while the excellence classroom at IES Algarb, in Eivissa, has registered 22 (for 30 places). On the other hand, in Menorca, the project has awakened, at the moment, much less interest: only 11 students have requested a place at IES Joan Ramis i Ramis in Maó (30 places). Of the students who have requested a place, 90.48% come from public schools. Enrollment remains active.

Teachers in Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera will be able to continue working until age 70 if they request it from the 2026-2027 academic year. The Minister of Education and Universities, Antoni Vera, announced this Wednesday that the Ministry will approve an instruction with new criteria to authorize retirement extensions for teaching civil servants over 65 years of age, which will differentiate the conditions according to the needs of each island.

The high school teacher Xavier Vadell, dean of the Official College and Association of Chemists of the Balearic Islands and a native of Andratx, will be the first director of IES Llorenç Villalonga, the new center promoted by the Ministry of Education to offer the Baccalaureate of Excellence in Mallorca from the 2026-2027 academic year and labeled as segregating by a good part of the educational community. Vadell will take on the direction after winning a competition for which he was the sole applicant and will be in charge of launching a high school that will open its doors in September. The new director shares his hometown with the Minister of Education and Universities, Antoni Vera, also from Andratx.

596 out of 1,014 students who took the extraordinary call for the University Entrance Exams (PAU), the first week of July, have passed the exams. This represents a pass rate of 58.8%, a figure slightly higher than that recorded last year, when the percentage was 56.7%.

The new IES Llorenç Villalonga, which will offer the Excellence Baccalaureate in Mallorca starting next academic year, will have to complete a large part of its staff with interim teachers, after only five tenured teachers have obtained a commission of services to join the center. This is according to various sources consulted by this newspaper, who believe that the final result deviates from the initial idea of the Ministry of Education to configure a faculty mainly composed of experienced tenured teachers. The same sources also question some of the movements made during the staffing process, including the incorporation of a 68-year-old teacher who, by seniority, could be retired.

The former director of IES Josep Maria Llompart, Jaume Salvà, sent an extensive analysis of the SIAU logo, the union that had most criticized his management at the head of the center. Salvà sent it to the organization just after resigning, a decision that ended weeks of unease between his supporters and detractors in the institute's cloister.

Can it be determined if a person will be a good teacher just because they have memorized a syllabus for months? More and more experts are answering no. At a time when the Balearic Islands, like countries across Europe, are facing a growing shortage of teachers, many universities and education professionals are proposing a far-reaching reform: to change the way future teachers and professors are trained, so that they learn the trade within the classrooms, accompanied by tutors and mentors, before entering public service. The proposal, inspired by the MIR for doctors, even opens the door to replacing competitive examinations with a year of paid professional induction subject to rigorous evaluation.

The teachers' assembly of IES Biel Martí (Ferreries) has made public a statement denouncing the "growing degradation of working conditions" in public educational centers in the Balearic Islands. The teaching staff warns that teacher cuts and lack of resources force the faculty to take on extraordinary tasks to maintain educational attention. They also demand "fewer cuts and more resources" and do not rule out mobilizations in September if the situation does not improve. The complaint joins those also made public by the institutes of Porto Cristo and Sa Blanca Dona, in Ibiza, which have warned of teacher cuts and the disappearance of some subjects.

The Federation of Student Families Associations (FAPA Mallorca) considers that the case of the central kitchen of Can Arabí is "the chronicle of a foretold closure" and calls for strengthening control over school canteens. The entity maintains that the detected irregularities not only highlight the bad practices of a specific company, but also a lack of supervision by the Administration.

The Federation of Student Families' Associations (FAPA Mallorca) has taken advantage of the school year's review to launch a global criticism of the Government's educational policies. The entity considers that the Ministry of Education has maintained a "good predisposition" for dialogue, but regrets that it has not translated into concrete actions or effective participation of families. Furthermore, it has warned that several decisions made during this school year point to "a change of model" in education towards greater corporatization and privatization of the system.

The opposition against the educational planning of the Ministry of Education for the 2026-2027 academic year is beginning to be felt in public schools in the Balearic Islands. The teacher assemblies of two institutes, IES Can Peu Blanc in sa Pobla and IES Sa Blanca Dona in Ibiza, have made public two highly critical manifestos in which they denounce the reduction of teaching staff, the elimination of groups and subjects, and the increase in student-teacher ratios planned in numerous centers. Both senates agree in warning that the cutbacks compromise the quality of public education and call on the Ministry to rectify.

The Ministry of Education considers that the results of this year's University Entrance Exams (PAU) demonstrate the failure of the implementation of the LOMLOE and the curricula derived from the educational reform. The minister, Antoni Vera, admitted this Tuesday that the data "are not good" after the percentage of eligible students fell from 92.5% recorded in 2025 to 89.6% in 2026, while failures increased to 10.4%.

STEI has reviewed the 2025-2026 academic year and has criticized the management of the Ministry of Education, which it accuses of having failed to comply with part of the agreements signed in 2023 and of not addressing the main problems of the educational system. The union has warned that, if its demands are not met, it will plan mobilizations during the next academic year.
