The conference is organized by the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), the Balearic Cultural Association (OCB), and the Institute of Balearic Studies (IEB). The President of the High Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands (TSJIB), Carlos Gómez, and the Rector of the UIB, Jaume Carot, will close the event. The Balearic Cultural Association emphasized in a press release that the perspective of legal protection is currently highly relevant given the regressive measures that, in their opinion, are gaining ground in several territories. In the case of the Balearic Islands, they warned that cultural and linguistic sustainability "is seriously at risk." Therefore, they stressed the urgent need to reverse this situation for the survival of Catalan. They also highlighted the positive collaboration between the organizing entities and noted that the conference will bring together top-level legal experts from universities across various regions. The conference will address how to legally protect freedom of language in diverse areas, including justice, healthcare, education, and digital administration. It will also analyze which regulations should be modified to guarantee the right to linguistic choice before state institutions. Finally, the last presentation of the conference will explore the feasibility of a new universal declaration of linguistic rights.

In the Balearic Islands, a significant number of families admit to using digital devices to soothe children, manage boredom, or help them calm down, even before the age of six. This is one of the most relevant conclusions of the study. Analysis of screen use in children aged 0 to 6 years A study by the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), commissioned by the Regional Ministry of Education, is based on responses from 8,991 families. 91.6% of families believe their children overuse devices. According to the study, nearly half of the families admit to using screens to calm their children "sometimes" or "often," while a smaller but still significant percentage say they do so regularly. This pattern is especially prevalent among children aged 3 to 6, when device use is fully integrated into daily routines and is no longer exceptional. Boredom is another determining factor. The report shows that screens are used as an immediate resource when children don't know what to do, a function that transforms them into a tool for containment and time management. This instrumental use, aimed at facilitating coexistence and reducing conflict, coexists with the widespread perception among families that they establish rules and limits.

The group has designed and manufactured a chip with an innovative artificial intelligence architecture, specifically designed for energy-critical environments such as IoT devices and edge computing systems. The chip uses stochastic computing to implement a morphological neural network, a technique that enables a high degree of parallelization within the circuit and significantly increases energy efficiency. According to the researchers, "the probabilistic coding used in the chip resembles the way neurons in our brain operate when communicating with each other, and this is key to achieving high energy efficiency," explains Josep Lluís Rosselló, principal investigator of the project.

This initiative, promoted through the Directorate General for Universities, Research, and Higher Artistic Education, aims to ensure that faculty members joining the university for the first time (and who have not been affiliated with the UIB in the last six years) have the necessary technological and material resources to immediately begin their teaching and research activities. The program targets departments that incorporate new full-time TRS, including assistant professors with doctorates from the Teaching and Research Talent Integration Program and staff hired with extraordinary contributions to compensate for the loss of teaching capacity resulting from the implementation of the Organic Law on Universities (LOSU). The measure will be applied retroactively from December 2024 and could benefit more than 100 faculty members and researchers. The Minister of Education, Antoni Vera, has expressed his commitment to public universities and to retaining talent through "dignifying the teaching and research profession." "This is the path we have set in motion, and the one we will continue to follow," he explained.

The measure, announced this Saturday, has been welcomed by the UGT Ensenyament teachers' union. Eighteen years later, with the opening of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (1998), the balance of power had changed radically: 50 public universities and 18 private ones. Today, almost half a century later, the landscape has reversed even further. There are 50 public universities and 42 private ones in Spain, and private initiatives threaten to equal—or even surpass—the public offerings.

"We wish to publicly express our deep concern and firm disagreement with the approach taken in this call for applications," stated sources from the organization, founded in 1977, adding, regarding the approved syllabus: "It has almost entirely relegated the content specific to our discipline and replaced it with a predominantly focused program." In the same statement, CEHA sources emphasized that "it is especially serious that a position intended to oversee the protection of movable property, painting and sculpture collections, and cultural assets of an artistic nature should disregard the knowledge necessary for their correct identification, interpretation, and historical assessment." Among others, topics such as 'Pre-Talayotic Culture in Mallorca through Archaeological Remains' and 'Mallorcan Gothic Painting' have disappeared, replaced by legal and administrative issues such as 'The Role of UNESCO and Advisory Bodies' and 'Unique Aspects of the Awarding Process'.

According to Diego González, president of the institution, they favor the former option. "The process is progressing. Our aim is to begin in September 2026. It's a broad project that will be implemented gradually," he says. ADEMA plans to offer eleven new degree programs not currently offered in the Balearic Islands, in areas such as Biomedicine, Sociology, and Architecture, in addition to those it currently offers as an affiliated center of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB)—the public university has also announced that it will implement Architecture studies. González explains that the institution has the capacity to implement all the degree programs, but that "the bureaucratic process to launch them is not easy." When fully operational, the center aspires to have 3,000 students. The project has the approval of the PP, the party that supports the Balearic Government, which has presented a bill in favor of the University of Mallorca – it has already undergone public consultation. However, not everyone in the cultural sector is satisfied with the text of the law, and the OCB (Catalan Cultural Association) has submitted objections. The organization requests guarantees of respect for the Statute of Autonomy and the official status of Catalan, both in teaching and in the linguistic rights of students and faculty. It also warns that the name 'Universitat de Mallorca' could cause confusion with a public institution and proposes changing its name to clearly indicate its private nature. González asserts that ADEMA (Association of Cultural Entities of Mallorca) has held the trademark for years. "We thought that calling it the University of Mallorca would be appealing, that people would agree, more so than calling it the University of Wisconsin," he says.

The Council of Mallorca has advertised a Heritage Technician position with an alarming peculiarity: it is the only position in the department traditionally intended for an art expert, yet the syllabus has eliminated all references to art history. The University of the Balearic Islands has issued a strong statement, and the rector himself has officially requested that the island institution rectify the situation. This is no small matter, because those responsible for protecting and valuing artistic assets require specific training. Without it, art in Mallorca is left orphaned and vulnerable.

In a non-binding report submitted to the Parliament's governing board, and accessed by ARA Baleares, the university's Technical Commission on Linguistic Advice expresses its opposition to the Speaker's proposals. Le Senne, who also heads the provincial executive committee of the Vox party, is a staunch opponent of the unity of the Catalan language. He insists that all speeches "made in Mallorcan (or any of the Balearic varieties) be translated into standard Catalan." Among other things, he requested that the definite article be retained in the transcripts of members' speeches in the Parliament's official record. Only 65.9% of the exams were answered in Catalan, a drop of 2.25 percentage points compared to the previous year, confirming the continuation of a trend that began in 2018. Until a few years ago, the presence of Catalan exceeded or was close to 80%, with a historical high of 82.6% in 2014. This proportion is now close to the values observed in 2004. Analyzing the historical series since 1992, one can observe how the use of Catalan in the PAU has gone through several cycles.
