A woman with two bags in each hand, a man with a fanny pack and a cap, another woman dragging a cart; they are all sweating profusely. A daily scene. They advance clinging to the facade of the buildings, like a line of ants, as if an invisible force were pulling them. In reality, just the opposite is happening: it is the heat that pushes them to seek the little shade cast by the street blocks. They are all heading towards Miquel Dolç square from Josep Darder street with different purposes, but with a shared secondary objective: to be touched as little as possible by the relentless sun of a July morning.

This never-ending summer has been a time of laments and litanies. We are more saturated than ever and have protested more than ever. But the gatherings, the demonstrations, the al fresco dinners, and the demands have only served to confirm the abyss between the street and the offices of those who decide about our lives, a gap that began to open legislatures ago and has now reached grandiose dimensions. This is not the land of brave politicians and those who truly command do not usually run in elections.

Tossing and turning in bed, sheets clinging to your body, windows open without a breath of air coming in and fans running all night long. If you could barely sleep last night, it wasn't just a feeling: the Balearic Islands have experienced an infernal night, with temperatures that in some places did not drop below 30 degrees.

The high temperature will put the Balearic Islands on alert this Wednesday. There will be yellow alerts in Ibiza, Formentera, the Serra de Tramuntana, the interior, north and northeast of Mallorca. They will be active between 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM due to the forecast that temperatures will reach 37 and 38°C. The Balearic Islands face a new day of intense heat this Saturday. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated the yellow alert for high temperatures in the Pitiusas and in several areas of Mallorca at 12:00 PM, where maximums could reach 38 degrees.

The high temperatures have advanced this year's grape harvest in Mallorca, to the point that some wineries have begun to receive grapes on July 21, almost a month earlier than was usual just a decade ago. Heat waves have caused a 30% increase in the sale of portable air conditioners, but industry professionals warn that they are not a good option. The Balearic Association of Technicians in Energy, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (ABTECIR) warned this Thursday that these units, which have become a quick solution because they do not require installation, are inefficient and increase energy consumption.

Complaints about the high temperature at Palma Airport are gaining strength. If a few weeks ago it was UGT who denounced the conditions under which part of the staff works during heatwaves, now CCOO has also joined the claims and assures that the situation puts workers' health at risk.

The Minister of Labor, Public Function and Social Dialogue, Catalina Cabrer, has asked Aena to reopen the canteen at Palma airport so that it can function as a climate shelter for workers. The request is part of the prevention campaign against high temperatures launched this summer by the Balearic Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Ibassal). Regarding Son Sant Joan, the Executive has also established communication channels between Aena and ground service companieswith the objective of responding to the problems derived from working conditions during heat episodes.

The high temperatures recorded this summer in Mallorca are already having direct consequences on the primary sector. Pig production companies grouped in Pimem have warned of an increase in livestock mortality, while farmers warn of a decrease in crop productivity and the difficulties caused by extreme heat on farms.

Binissalem registered this Friday the second highest temperature in the entire State, reaching 40 degreesat 1:50 PM, according to the latest data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

The Directorate General of Emergencies maintains the yellow alert for high temperatures in Mallorca and the Pitiüses Islands. Emergencies 112 has decreed this Saturday the orange alert (IG-1) for heat in Mallorca and the yellow alert in Menorca (IG-0). Specifically, the south of Mallorca will reach a temperature of up to 39 degrees this Saturday and, in the case of the center and north of the island, it will be 38, according to the Aemet forecast for this day. Therefore, the island is in a situation of "important risk" due to intense heat. This forecast will be in effect from noon until eight in the evening.
