They are two MH-60R Seahawk helicopters – serial numbers 168158 and 168167 – belonging to HSM-79 squadron, a unit usually deployed at the Rota naval base in Cádiz. The aircraft, which specialize in naval missions such as anti-submarine warfare and maritime surveillance, remained in Mallorca for several hours before resuming their flight to the Spanish mainland, with their final destination being Almería. The stop was reportedly due to technical issues during the flight, after a descent was detected while they were flying towards Palma from southern France.

The Cuban government has warned airlines that it cannot guarantee kerosene supplies at the country's airports for weeks, a situation that has forced a reconfiguration of flight operations and accelerated adjustments in the hotel sector. The crisis is part of a serious energy emergency plaguing the country, with difficulties importing oil and its derivatives, which affects not only air transport but also the electricity supply and economic activity in general. Tourism, Cuba's main source of foreign currency, is once again in an extremely vulnerable position.

However, the scene seemed to suggest that America, the United States, had disappointed this man; its justice system had failed him when it hadn't been able to punish his daughter's attackers. That's why he was now asking the head of the Mafia family to deliver 'justice,' to punish the violent young men because the legal system hadn't been able to (one of the young men was from a 'good family').

In a context of constant geopolitical friction, with the United States unleashed in its neocolonial offensive, a militarily weak Russia yet ready to undermine all the non-aggression pacts established at the end of the Cold War, and a China that is quietly growing and expanding both within and beyond its borders, the global context is complex, and I can think of few solutions more surprisingly feasible and appropriate today than this one.

The US president insisted to the leader of the Atlantic Alliance that he "needs" Greenland "for national security" and spoke about a possible annexation: "I think we'll do it. We really need it for national security." Greenland is an autonomous territory that is part of Denmark, a NATO ally. The damning report from the House Ethics Committee accuses Gaetz of paying tens of thousands of dollars for sex and drugs on at least 20 occasions, including paying for sex with a 17-year-old girl in 2017, according to a draft obtained by CNN. The committee itself, led by Republicans, had announced it would release the report on Gaetz, a move he had sought to avoid by resigning his seat. The draft report concludes that the Florida congressman violated the laws of that state, including legislation on rape and sexual assault. The GOP-led group opted to take the unusual step of publishing a report on a former member who resigned from Congress. "The Committee determined that there is substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House rules and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use, inadmissible gifts, special favors or privileges, and obstruction of Congress." According to the report, the panel investigated transactions Gaetz personally conducted, often using PayPal or Venmo, with a dozen women during his time in Congress. Investigators also focused on a 2018 trip to the Bahamas, which they said "violated the House gift rule," during which he "engaged in sexual activity" with several women, including one who described the trip itself as "payment" for sex. On the same trip, he also took ecstasy, one woman on the trip told the committee.

We've always been fascinated by events in the United States. Whoever is the US president and how this might affect global politics, the economy, and culture has always been a crucial issue, especially in post-war Europe, although American dominance became more entrenched with the collapse of the USSR and the so-called victory of the Cold War, when the system of free-market capitalism, hand in hand, ruled. With globalization, what became globalized above all was the United States' influence on the rest of the globe, so knowing the latest political mania of the president living in the White House was as obligatory as paying local taxes.

The statue of Ramon Llull on the Paseo de Antoni Maura, in front of Muelle Vell, includes in the various languages in which the Mallorcan scholar preached (Catalan, Arabic, Latin) some of the verses of the Book of Friend and Lover which have not lost their relevance, despite having been written eight centuries ago: Justice brings peace, and injury, war; humble words herald peace, and proud words, war. Words that would apply to almost any geographical context, at any time in history, and that explain both what is happening in Palestine and the rise of fascism in Western countries in recent years.

A recent book worth reading is Poverty Made in the USA, by American sociologist Matthew Desmond (Capitán Swing, 2024). It paints a well-documented portrait of the problem of poverty in the richest country in the world and proposes some quite imaginative possible solutions, although not always applicable to other places. But, in my opinion, the book's great virtue is its successful attempt to give visibility to a group as numerous as it is hidden: the poor.

June has left me with two discoveries: the verb "to graduate" and the Yankee ESO graduations. They are related. A couple of weeks ago, teenagers announced that they "graduated" or "did not graduate" to indicate whether or not they had completed Compulsory Secondary Education. Before, we simply said we had passed. Or finished whatever. Even a university degree. "Graduate" sounds more important, even if we're talking about the minimum requirements of the educational system. I've seen several photos of boys decked out in jackets, ties, and broccoli-style hair, tousled and styled to perfection. The girls, in evening gowns, even though the graduation is in full sun and the humidity is still suffocating. They set up a stage with a sign that says "Class of 2025," and then they throw their mortarboards in the air.
