The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) will begin the 2026-2027 academic year this Monday, during which it will have about 11,000 undergraduate students and the launch of its energy self-consumption project with a maximum installed power peak of 7.5 MW.

The Minister of Education and Universities, Antoni Vera, has announced that all public educational centers in the Balearic Islands will have a school canteen service this academic year. The measure is part of the new features that the Ministry plans for the start of the school year (September 10), along with new infrastructures, changes in the coverage of teaching positions, and the start of negotiations for the new Educational Commitment 2027-2031.

Can Arabí will not manage any public school canteen this academic year. The company, which provided service to 44 centers until last year, has been left out of the new contracts that the Ministry of Education is awarding these days. The outcome comes after the Ministry of Health provisionally suspended the activity of the Can Arabí central kitchen last June due to several breaches in food safety matters. Education confirms that the suspension from Health has been decisive in removing the company from the new contracts. “Health suspended Can Arabí as an operator at the time. This allowed Education to restrict all contracts,” explain sources from the department. According to Education, the new services are being awarded to other companies these days and “none of them is Can Arabí”.

The Department of Education will bring this week to the Sectoral Table the proposal for teaching positions of difficult coverage for the 2026-2027 academic year. The draft, to which ARA Balears has had access, includes 191 combinations of specialty, workload, and island, six more than last year, with a particularly high incidence in Ibiza (75 positions) and Menorca (43). Formentera concentrates 25 positions considered of very difficult coverage. These positions are linked to the economic supplements agreed by Education: 200 euros per month in Menorca, 300 in Ibiza, and 400 in Formentera.

The workers of the nursery schools demand that Education act against the centers that would have advanced the start of the school year calendar and that, according to their complaints, are applying criteria different from those officially established. The Xarxa 0-3, in a statement signed by a large part of the unions and collectives in the sector, warns that some centers would be following the indications of some employers and offering families different dates to start the adaptation period. Faced with this situation, the workers demand that the General Directorate of Early Childhood intervene immediately to ensure that all centers comply with the same instructions.

The PSIB-PSOE denounced this Monday in Algaida that Marga Prohens' government prioritizes subsidized nursery schools over municipal ones and has called for local administrations to receive the same support to be able to assume the expenses derived from education for 0 to 3 year olds. The Balearic university thus ceases to be among the 1,000 best university institutions in the world, according to a classification that is published every August 15 and which this year places 30 Spanish universities among the first thousand.

The 0-3 Network and the unions CCOO, UGT, and STEI have publicly denounced that in subsidized nursery schools, educators are "habitually obliged" to undertake tasks of cleaning classrooms and bathrooms, maintenance, and administration, and even to cook and prepare meals for the dining hall. The new offer includes visits, workshops, and educational activities related to folk tales, archaeological sites, historical memory, and literature. The Balearic Government's new decree on educational cooperation agreements has sparked widespread rejection among key players in the educational and political left in the Balearic Islands. The Teachers' Assembly, STEI, and Alternativa Docent agree in denouncing that the new regulatory framework consolidates and expands the weight of subsidized schools while public education continues to suffer from a lack of resources and planning. The Government will ensure that teachers and technicians of Early Childhood Education in subsidized centers of the first cycle, from 0 to 3 years old, are incorporated into the delegated payroll payment system from January 2027. The Governing Council approved this Friday the decree-law of urgent measures in educational matters, which modifies the financing model of the stage launched in 2023 with free schooling. The Department of Education and Universities will promote the necessary actions during the second half of this year so that the new system can come into operation in January 2027. The Department of Education has this Tuesday claimed the results of this summer's teaching positions' allocation processes, which it considers "the best organized in years," and has assured that they will allow the school year to begin with practically complete staff.
