In this context, they warn of the “deep unease of the educational community regarding the current situation of the centre concerning the building's structure and the works being carried out there – which, incidentally, were supposed to begin last summer, not at the start of the school year”.

First words of the teacher who suffered the homophobic aggression at IES Baltasar Porcel, a case that ARA Balears exclusively reported and in which several minors have already been identified. “I am very grateful for the support received. I finish at the center this Wednesday and right now I am correcting the last exams. I am fine, in fact, I am very well. I have a lot of work, but I feel good,” he explains. “I have a law degree. I had a class with the suspects and I made them read the Penal Code and the Minor's Law, to show them that, even though they are minors, all types of crimes have consequences. They are 16 and 17 years old, and everything has repercussions: even if they don't go to prison, they can be sent to a juvenile center,” he adds in conversation with ARA Balears.

The homophobic episode that a teacher from IES Baltasar Porcel suffered from students has been the trigger for a type of MeToo in the education sector, with various professionals sharing similar experiences of verbal and sexist violence within classrooms. The situation has caused strong indignation among the educational community, which has long warned of the increase in aggressions and disrespect towards teachers, many of them (33%) physical. Professionals consider that the case that has come to light this week is the tip of the iceberg of a broader and often silenced problem.

The Government intends to modify the functioning of the School Council of the Balearic Islands (CEIB) without prior notification. The CEIB, the highest body for participation of the educational community of the Balearic Islands, has rejected proposals from the Executive on several occasions. The change is to be introduced through an amendment to the decree-law that accelerates strategic projects for the economic transformation of the Balearic Islands, even though the decree has no relation to the educational consultative function. The objective is to reduce the CEIB's deadlines for issuing reports, a key process for it to analyze and make contributions on the regulations and projects of the Ministry of Education. Although, usually, most content proposals are dismissed and those of a formal nature are the ones that are ultimately incorporated.

The STEI union has issued a warning about the job future of municipal nursery workers in the Balearic Islands. According to them, many of them “will be left without work” if the town councils opt to transfer the centers to the Ministry of Education and Universities.

A teacher at the Guillem Sagrera Secondary School in Palma has sparked controversy after preventing students from submitting assignments in Catalan and urging them to do so in Spanish. The school's language policy explicitly states: "Catalan, as established by current legislation, is the language of instruction and learning at the school and will be used in all organized activities. Consequently, it will be the instrument of teaching and learning and of regular communication in all internal and external areas of the school, and especially in activities with students." However, the document does not specify in which language any subject should be taught and merely states that at the beginning of the school year each teacher will be asked which language they will use and that everything will then be managed to ensure compliance with current regulations.

The Balearic Islands' education system is once again revealing its structural deficiencies. This year, 644 substitute teachers are working class without having accredited the level of Catalan This figure, according to data from the Ministry of Education, which does not specify the affected stages or levels, is three times higher than in 2022 and demonstrates how the shortage of professionals has strained the system to the point of having to to make language requirements more flexiblewhich, under normal conditions, would be mandatory.

The subject of Religion in the Balearic Islands This reinforces a downward trend among public school students.While enrollment in state-subsidized private schools has increased, the total number of students enrolled in state-subsidized private schools has fallen from 63,148 in the 2022-2023 academic year to 59,561 in 2025-2026, a reduction of approximately 3,600 students (-5.68%). This decline is particularly significant in the state school system, which has dropped from 24,518 students to 19,552 in recent years, a decrease of 4,966 students, or 20%. This decline has notably affected the presence of Religion as a subject in state schools, where there are fewer and fewer interested students. Conversely, state-subsidized private schools are experiencing the opposite trend: enrollment has increased from 38,630 to 40,009 students, a rise of 1,379 students, or 3.5%.

Teachers in Mallorca They have made their discontent known. In front of Parliament during the plenary session, the Non-University Teaching Staff Committee, made up of the sector's unions, read a statement denouncing the management of the Ministry of Education and the "lack of truth" of Minister Antoni Vera. According to the manifesto, written by the Committee's president, Catalina Bibiloni, the handling of the 2026 competitive examination deadline was "the last straw" due to the Ministry's lack of negotiation. Furthermore, the teachers emphasized that the 2023 Framework Agreement for the Improvement of Public Education "has not been fully implemented, despite the Administration's claims that it has been gradually put into effect."

The Teachers' Assembly has reacted strongly to the recent pact between the People's Party and Vox that would reduce the Catalan language requirements for teachers in the Balearic Islands. In its statement, the union points out that "We are witnessing, once again, a new episode in Vox's obsession with the linguistic rights of Catalan speakers and with linguistic freedom, as well as another capitulation by the People's Party to the demands of the far right. The question is unavoidable: how far are they willing to go?"

The reactions in the agreement between the PP and Vox to eliminate the Catalan requirement In certain teaching positions described as "very difficult to fill," and in other public sector positions, the measure has been swift. It primarily affects areas where finding teaching staff is challenging and is presented as a way to expedite immediate hiring. According to Vox spokesperson Manuela Cañadas, the modification without language restrictions would allow these positions to be filled more quickly. Currently, it is already possible to access temporary teaching positions without Catalan, provided there are no other applicants who can demonstrate proficiency. What the PP and Vox are now proposing is access to civil service positions without having to prove competence: obtaining a permanent position.

If soagreement between the PP and Vox Had the measure been implemented this year to allow teachers without the Catalan language requirement to access civil service positions, 877 positions would have been exempt from this accreditation. These are all the positions that the Ministry of Education has classified as "very difficult to fill," which are precisely the ones the agreement contemplates exempting from the language requirement. The measure was first proposed in July, during the 2025 budget negotiations. At that time, it was stated that, although the requirement would not be demanded initially, a period would be given for those interested to demonstrate it after they had already secured the position. The Ministry of Education indicates that the Governing Council will determine each year which positions have this condition and that teachers without Catalan will not have a permanent teaching position until they demonstrate their proficiency.

Public school teachers will be able to enjoy up to six personal days per year for the first time, known as 'moscosos'. The Regional Ministry of Education is processing a resolution that regulates leave for personal matters for tenured teaching staff, a right that already exists for other public employees, but which until now had not been specifically developed for this group. Temporary teachers will be able to enjoy the same leave if they fill a vacant or program position and start during the first two months of the school year. In other cases, the number of days will be calculated proportionally to the actual working time, with the understanding that 175 school days worked (a full school year) are equivalent to the six full days of leave.

The Ministry of Education proposes that teachers be able to concentrate the face-to-face teaching hours in at least four days, if each center decides to do so according to its specific circumstances. The measure already applies to conservatory professionals, but the first draft of the teaching staff decree, which ARA Baleares has accessed, extends its scope to all educational centers. The document establishes that each teacher may teach a maximum of six hours of class per day. Although the total number of in-person hours would not change, these would be concentrated into four days. Centers, however, will have to maintain academic activity throughout the week, which will require reorganizing schedules to guarantee student support and, according to union sources, could imply an increase in staff to cover all shifts. This challenge comes in a context where the Ministry of Education is already having difficulties filling all positions, especially in Secondary and Vocational Training.

A total of 1,434 teachers have applied to participate in the competitive examination for teaching positions in the Balearic Islands, which will be held on May 9th and 10th. According to a statement from the Ministry of Education and Universities, 1,066 applicants have applied in Mallorca; 75 in Menorca; 281 in Ibiza; and a dozen in Formentera. These figures represent an increase compared to last year, when 1,290 applications were received.

The Teachers' Assembly of IES Alcúdia has "strongly" condemned the recent attack on a teacher at the school after he reprimanded a student, an incident that has generated significant concern within the educational community. However, the teaching staff emphasizes that this is an isolated incident and that it should in no way overshadow the collaborative work carried out with students and families to build bonds, positive relationships, and a sense of belonging. In a statement, the teachers stress that the school is generally a safe and harmonious environment, but warn that the attack highlights a reality that extends beyond this specific case. In this regard, they are calling on the Regional Ministry of Education to adopt effective measures to guarantee a positive environment in schools and to ensure that teachers can carry out their work in peace and security. The Assembly frames this incident within a broader context that, they point out, is increasingly normalizing the violent resolution of conflicts. "It is more necessary than ever to educate in a culture of peace," he argues, while insisting on the importance of joining forces to ensure a climate based on respect and dialogue. He also calls for real support for schools and teachers, with the guarantee that their educational work will be respected and valued. The attack on the Alcúdia Secondary School comes at a time when teachers' discontent is increasingly visible. A recent survey by the STEI union reveals that more than 75% of teachers in the Balearic Islands perceive an increase in conflict in the classroom. According to this study, almost eight out of ten teachers report an increase in verbal—and occasionally physical—aggression from students, and three out of four confirm that this tension also stems from families. Teachers also point to structural factors that exacerbate the situation: high student-teacher ratios, a lack of material resources, excessive bureaucracy, and a widespread feeling of institutional vulnerability. This cocktail, they warn, has a direct impact on both the quality of education and the emotional well-being of teachers. Given this scenario, the Teachers' Assembly of IES Alcúdia considers it essential to strengthen resources, materials, and strategies for conflict prevention and management. The goal, they insist, is not only to react to violent incidents, but to sustainably improve the climate of coexistence in classrooms and ensure that schools remain safe spaces for everyone.
