The replacement of the educational management system in the Balearic Islands has opened a deep debate about the role of large private corporations in essential public infrastructures. The Professional College of Teachers of the Balearic Islands has expressed its “concern about the replacement process being carried out by the Ministry of Education and Universities” in relation to the change from the academic management platform GestIB to a new solution called Llull, derived from Séneca and awarded through a public contract to the private corporation Ayesa. In this context, the teaching collective particularly warns of the risk of technological dependence on large external actors in the management of sensitive educational data.

The Ministry of Education has opened disciplinary proceedings against five members of the management and technical structure of the IES Sports Technology Center of the Balearic Islands (CTEIB), in Palma, following the conclusions obtained after the extraordinary inspection carried out last June, as reported by Diario de Mallorca. The decision comes after months of internal tensions and a confidential investigation initiated by the Ministry. It should be remembered that in February, 38 members of the faculty issued a statement to deny "an alleged internal crisis and mismanagement by the management team". The current legislation allows a teacher convicted of child abuse to continue working in classrooms once they have served their sentence. This is the current situation, pending the Spanish government finalizing the text of the reform of the Law for the Comprehensive Protection of Children and Adolescents against Violence (Lopivi) to prevent such cases, with the question still open as to whether it will be applied retroactively. The debate has accelerated following the case of Miquel Roldán, a temporary teacher convicted in 2024 to one year in prison for having abused a former student. The law does not foresee cases like Roldán's, and he has been able to return to work.

The Council of Ministers has approved the reform of the Law for the Comprehensive Protection of Children and Adolescents against Violence (Lopivi) to, among other measures, prevent teachers convicted of crimes related to minors from practicing. This decision has had a special echo in the Balearic Islands following the case of Miquel Roldán, a professional sentenced to one year in prison for harassing a former student, who upon returning to practice has caused families from CEIP Son Pisà and CEIP Maria Antònia Salvà to go on strike to reject his presence in a classroom with children. However, will this legislative modification really affect him?

The Ministry of Education and Universities began this Saturday the selection process tests for entry into the teaching corps. Of the total of 1,335 admitted candidates, 1,082 teachers finally showed up, opting for one of the 630 positions called this year.

Miquel Roldán is convicted of harassment of minors, according to article 172 ter of the Penal Code. In no case are sexual offenses attributed to him. ARA Balears has had access to the sentence that declared him guilty in the year 2024. What did he do and why was he convicted? The arrival of the teacher at CEIP Son Pisà has provoked the reaction of families, who refuse to take their children there. The same already happened at the beginning of the school year at CEIP Maria Antònia Salvà. The Council of Ministers has given the green light this Tuesday, in a first reading, to the expansion of the Organic Law for the Comprehensive Protection of Children and Adolescents against Violence, in force since 2021. The reform toughens the criteria for being able to work or remain in professions, trades, and activities that involve regular contact with minors. From now on, it will be an essential requirement not to have a criminal record for offenses related to childhood to access these job positions. This measure aims to prevent situations like that of the teacher Miguel Roldán, convicted of harassing a student, whose hiring at an educational center generated rejection among families.

The families of CEIP Son Pisà have announced the lifting of the strike they have maintained for seven days, which consisted of not taking their children to school to denounce the presence at the center of Miquel Roldán, a teacher convicted of harassment. Nevertheless, they explain, the decision does not imply the end of the conflict or their demands. In the statement, the families explain that “much to our regret and despite having achieved 30% participation today, we announce for tomorrow, the 6th, the lifting of the general strike we have maintained for seven days”.

The three most representative unions ofCoinciding with the strike, the Xarxa 0-3, with union support, has called for rallies on the same May 7 at 6:00 PM in the Plaza de España in Palma, in Vara de Rey (Ibiza) and in the Plaza del Born (Ciutadella), with the aim of making the conflict visible and demanding immediate responses. These protests are a continuation of the mobilizations initiated in Mallorca, with rallies on April 27 and May 4. The call initially planned for May 11 has been canceled to coincide with the strike day.

When I was studying, there were already attempts to teach sex education, but they were often massive and ineffective: sessions with over a hundred students and an adult monitor who showed us a condom he held in his hand. A substitute teacher at the Llorenç Garcias i Font institute in Artà, Mallorca, has been arrested by the Civil Guard for alleged touching of a minor student who was in her fourth year of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) and has been suspended by the Ministry of Education until the end of the school year.

The families of CEIP Son Pisá have expressed their “deep concern” about the incorporation to the center of Miquel Roldán, the Mallorcan teacher judicially convicted of harassing a minor, a situation that, they assure, has generated “alarm and unease” within the educational community.
