The three most representative unions ofCoinciding with the strike, the Xarxa 0-3, with union support, has called for rallies on the same May 7 at 6:00 PM in the Plaza de España in Palma, in Vara de Rey (Ibiza) and in the Plaza del Born (Ciutadella), with the aim of making the conflict visible and demanding immediate responses. These protests are a continuation of the mobilizations initiated in Mallorca, with rallies on April 27 and May 4. The call initially planned for May 11 has been canceled to coincide with the strike day.

The STEI union has issued a warning about the job future of municipal nursery workers in the Balearic Islands. According to them, many of them “will be left without work” if the town councils opt to transfer the centers to the Ministry of Education and Universities.

Only six childcare centers (ages 0-3) in Mallorca applied for grants from the Consell (Island Council) to convert into educational nurseries, according to the requirements incorporated into the 2023 regulations. The Mallorcan Institute of Social Affairs (IMAS) had allocated almost one million euros for the program, but only 40,000 euros (4%) were awarded to the beneficiary center. The Consell says it does not yet have a record of how many nurseries operate on the island, as they only require a municipal license. In May 2023, in accordance with the regulations, a three-month period was opened for centers to notify their existence, the first step to qualify for the grant, but most did not do so.

Portocristo will have a new preschool for children aged 0 to 3 in a year and a half. This project, long overdue, has suffered several delays due to the municipal government's desire to adapt the space to different functions. The reason is that, in addition to the mandatory educational use, the new building, whose construction began last week, will include the town's new cultural auditorium.

In Spain, compulsory education begins when a child is six years old (first grade of primary school), although most families enroll their children until they are three years old (fourth grade of kindergarten). Previously, there was the 0-3 stage, which until a few years ago was unknown and only a small number of children could access. All of this occurs in a context of great diversity, with public, private, subsidized, directly and indirectly managed schools. With the free provision of this stage, initiated by the Pact government and continued by the PP, the number of applications for places has skyrocketed, but those that exist are not enough to meet demand. Meanwhile, 0-3 education professionals do not feel valued and believe that daycare centers are still perceived as places to leave children.

MÁS por Palma criticized this Wednesday that the PP "continues to not pay the aid for the 2024-2025 academic year so that families can pay for a 0-3 kindergarten," a situation that the spokesperson for the party in Cort, Neus Truyol, described as "outrageous, unacceptable, and absolutely unacceptable."

CCOO Baleares has publicly denounced the "chaos and mismanagement" in the publication of the lists of temporary Educational Technical Assistants (ATE) and early childhood educators by the Ministry of Education. In a statement, the union recalled that following the precedent of lists of temporary teachers published "with errors and delays," political leaders defended the new temporary teacher pool model as "a more agile and rigorous system" for allocating positions.

The Ministry of Education and Universities and the UGT and CCOO unions have signed an agreement to improve the working conditions of female employees at indirectly managed preschools for children aged 0 to 3 in the Balearic Islands. This agreement creates a regional economic supplement that will entail a direct salary increase of between €200 and €460 per month, depending on the category.

The main union and employer organizations in the early childhood education sector reached an agreement this Monday to create a regional salary increase supplement for workers in indirectly managed daycare centers in the Balearic Islands. The agreement includes monthly supplements of between 200 and 400 euros depending on the professional category, an additional 60 euros for tutoring, 100 euros for teachers with a university degree, and annual supplement updates of 6% in 2026 and 2% in 2027. The agreement will be gradually implemented for all workers in September, starting from September 1st to August 1st, 2028.
