Simebal highlighted the "massive" participation of Resident Physicians (MIRs) in strategic hospital services, such as anesthesiology, with "very high" figures, such as the 95 percent participation rate at Son Espases University Hospital. In addition, numerous outpatient services have been affected, causing a "significant impact on healthcare" in the Balearic Islands. The doctors' protest will continue with one week of strike action each month until June, unless an agreement is reached.

On this first day, more than 3,000 appointments and tests were canceled, along with a total of 77 surgeries in the Balearic Islands. According to provisional data from the Balearic Islands Health Service (IB-Salut), the strike resulted in the cancellation of 2,162 primary care appointments and 77 surgical procedures. Regarding outpatient activity, 1,835 appointments were not performed, in addition to various diagnostic and radiological tests. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health, which is responsible for healthcare and has access to data on which professionals have participated in the protest, has declined to provide participation figures and refers inquiries to the Simebal union. "In recent strikes, we haven't provided participation data. We only report on the activity suspended due to the strike," sources at IB-Salut (the Balearic Islands Health Service) stated. According to Simebal, the first day of the nationwide doctors' strike saw high participation in the Balearic Islands, with 90% of hospital staff and 70% of primary care professionals joining, maintaining reinforced minimum services. Union sources indicate these figures are similar to those recorded in the rest of Spain. Young doctors have been particularly active in the protest, with participation reaching 95% in strategic services such as Anesthesia, which has had a direct impact on surgical procedures. Sources from Simebal-CESM, the doctors' union that called the strike in the Balearic Islands, wanted to send a direct message to patients: "Patients must be able to trust us. This strike is to guarantee the safety of both doctors and patients." The organization apologized for any inconvenience the mobilization might cause and noted that a protest of this magnitude had not been held since 1995.

Both sides met this Thursday in a meeting where SFM presented union representatives with a document outlining the status of the 48 measures demanded by the works council. According to the public company's manager, José Ramón Orta, it is now up to the workers to analyze the proposal. Orta explained that the document is the result of an analysis prepared by technical staff and includes an evaluation of each demand, as well as a planned implementation schedule. The manager emphasized that virtually none of the points require political intervention, except for those related to the outsourcing of services. However, the works council considers the assessment highly critical. Its president, Ricardo Mas, described the document as "devoid of content" and lamented the vagueness of the responses. "It's like Groundhog Day. They say they've worked hard, but the points are just rambling: that it will be studied, that the appropriate tool will be sought…," he remarked. Mas warned that if concrete commitments don't emerge from the next meeting, a schedule of protests will be launched. In fact, he acknowledged that at the beginning of Thursday's meeting, the committee even walked out with the intention of going to the Balearic Islands Arbitration and Mediation Tribunal (TAMIB) to formally register strikes. "We can't wait any longer. It's the only way to get results," he stated.

https://en.arabalears.cat/society/sfm-and-workers-move-closer-to-an-agreement-ahead-of-partial-strikes-for-railway-safety_1_5630035.html

The management of Mallorca Railway Services (SFM) took a step towards dialogue with the works council on Tuesday, after workers agreed in an assembly to call partial strikes to demand improvements in the safety of the railway network. The meeting, scheduled for Wednesday morning, aims to defuse the conflict before the protest materializes. Union representatives and the management of the public company will meet at the headquarters to open a channel of dialogue based on the demands expressed by the workers, who announced the mobilizations after months of complaints about deficiencies in infrastructure safety, equipment maintenance, and other technical aspects of the network. During the first assembly, held on Monday, delegates approved by majority vote the call for work stoppages, likely compatible with the nationwide train drivers' strike scheduled for February 9, 10, and 11, although the protest has not yet been formally registered. The unions argued that the action is not intended as an attack on the service, but rather as a tool to denounce situations they consider unsustainable and that endanger both staff and passengers. The works council has confirmed it will attend the meeting "in a constructive spirit, but with the firmness the situation demands," according to a statement released this Tuesday. The unions emphasized that their goal is to reach "concrete and binding" agreements on safety, with effective measures and clear commitments to prevent the recurrence of risky situations. "Safety is non-negotiable," they stressed. The call for partial strikes comes in a context marked by the train accidents in Adamuz (Córdoba) and Gelida (Barcelona), fatal incidents that have reopened the debate on the safety standards of Spanish railway infrastructure and which SFM workers have cited as a point of reference to justify their actions. For their part, SFM management and the Balearic Government have issued reassuring messages to the public, maintaining that the railway network in Mallorca is safe and that historic investments have been made in the safety and maintenance of trains, tracks, and associated systems. The Minister of Mobility, José Luis Mateo, expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue but emphasized the need for union demands to be "specific and well-founded."

The protesters met in front of the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands with banners demanding their own statute and proclaiming that "the dignity of doctors is non-negotiable." This protest is part of the four-day strike called by the State Confederation of Medical Unions (CESM) between December 9 and 12. The Balearic Islands Medical Union (Simebal) reported that the turnout for the third day of the strike was similar to the previous days, with participation rates approaching 85 percent in hospitals and between 65 and 70 percent in primary care.

The strike, which will continue until Friday, is part of the nationwide protest against the draft Framework Statute for Statutory Personnel of the National Health System, prepared by the Ministry of Health. So far, in Mallorca, the strike has forced the cancellation of 120 surgeries, 2,343 hospital appointments, 324 radiological tests, 53 diagnostic tests, and 2,253 primary care appointments. In Ibiza and Formentera: 28 surgeries, 149 hospital appointments, 54 radiological tests, 24 diagnostic tests, and 634 primary care appointments. According to the Simebal union, the first day's strike in the Balearic Islands saw "very high participation," especially in hospitals, with 85% turnout and up to 100% in Anesthesiology. In Primary Care, however, participation was between 65% and 70%, which Simebal attributed to the strain on healthcare services due to the flu. During these four days of the strike, the government has established minimum services to guarantee essential care and prevent the protest from seriously affecting patients. Thus, 100% coverage will be maintained in urgent and critical services: Emergency Room, Oncology, Radiotherapy, Dialysis, Oncological Surgery, Day Hospital, and Hospital Pharmacy, among others. Emergency and on-call services (PAC/SUAP/061) will also be guaranteed. Furthermore, each primary care center must have at least one doctor and one pediatrician on duty in the morning, with additional staffing in centers with a high number of patients.

The workers are demanding improvements in both service quality and working conditions. The strike saw massive participation, and workers also held a demonstration in Plaça de Santa Eulàlia, in front of City Hall. According to a member of the staff committee, which includes all the unions in the area, the strike was very well-attended and affected virtually all offices. All the OACs closed, except for the one in Plaça de Santa Eulàlia, which kept about four employees on duty until 12:45 pm, when it had to close due to the large number of people queuing.
