Menorca will limit car entry from June 1, 2027. This is the common objective of the PP and the PSOE, who have hastily agreed to modify the Biosphere Reserve Law to make it possible. For various reasons, Més per Menorca and the renegade Vox councilor have voted against it.

The Consell de Menorca has postponed until Wednesday the extraordinary plenary session scheduled for this Monday to approve the modification of the Biosphere Reserve Law, a necessary step to promote the limitation of vehicle entry to the island.

The moratorium that has been in effect since 2022 has resulted in the loss of over 2,800 tourist places in Menorca in the last four years, which this season offers 81,261 beds to visitors, below the 84,000 mark that had been surpassed just after the pandemic.

The second week of August Menorca has welcomed a new large-format music festival, Ukalari Live. A cyclist who had disappeared this Saturday has been found lifeless today in Ciutadella, Menorca. The man had gone out in the morning to do a bike route through the Pont d'en Gil and La Falconera area, but had not returned, which triggered a search operation.

On August 12, 2026, the Balearic Islands will be one of the few places from which to contemplate a total solar eclipse. But it won't be enough to find yourself on the right island: the phenomenon will practically coincide with sunset and any building, tree or mountain that blocks the western horizon may prevent you from seeing its most spectacular moment.

A scientific campaign developed over two weeks in northern Menorca has detected 48 sperm whales, one fifth of which were calves, a figure that reinforces the role of these waters as one of the main breeding areas for the species in the western Mediterranean.

The following proposed itinerary is a long walk through the south of the municipality of Maó, along old, narrow paths, between dry stone and history. We start from the hermitage of Gràcia, patron saint of the city which has been, since the 18th century and by British imposition, the capital of Menorca. Water reserves have never been so low in Menorca, only at 34% of capacity, and the pre-alert situation is beginning to alarm everyone. The Administration has arrived late to act and has not listened in time to specialists like engineer José Antonio Fayas, who had long warned that in the last decade practically nothing has been done to stop overexploiting aquifers, limit swimming pools, increase the cost of water, and reuse the regenerated water that comes out of treatment plants.

When water is not enough, room for manoeuvre runs out. It is the most basic limit any society has. And the Balearic Islands have started this summer closer to that limit than in recent years. Water reserves have dropped again. Menorca registers the worst levels. Almost fifty municipalities – 47 out of the 67 that exist – entered the summer in a state of alert or pre-alert for drought. The Government itself admits that climate change will make droughts longer, rainfall more irregular, and aquifer recharge more difficult. These are not catastrophic forecasts, they are official data.
