The Government has reported that it inspected last week all the hen farms of Avícola Ballester that were reported by animal rights organizations and did not detect "any notable incident". This was detailed this Tuesday by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, Joan Simonet, in response to a question from PSIB deputy Malena Riudavets during this Tuesday's plenary session of Parliament.

The Avícola Son Perot project to build a farm for 80,000 laying hens at the Son Brau estate, in Manacor, has received all unfavorable reports from the Manacor City Council. Technicians question aspects regarding urban planning, environment, and mobility. The resolution for the integrated environmental authorization now lies with the Government.

ARDE and Satya Animal registered 50,000 signatures this Friday morning against the project for an 80,000-hen factory farm at the Son Brau estate in Manacor, promoted by Avícola Son Perot, which is linked to Avícola Ballester. The entities delivered them to the Government of the Balearic Islands to demand that the new facility not be authorized.

The spokesperson for Satya Animal, Kike Gimeno, ruled out this Thursday morning retracting the statements regarding the conditions of the hens at the Mirabó farm, owned by Avícola Ballester in Manacor. The statements come in a crossfire of accusations after the company announced this very Thursday that it will take legal action against him if he does not do so. “Zero surprises regarding the complaint,” and he assured that the organization is prepared to go “to the final consequences”.

Avícola Son Perot and Avícola Ballester announce that this Thursday they will take legal action against Kike Gimeno, spokesperson for Satya Animal, for his statements regarding a possible risk of salmonella in eggs from the Mirabò farm. The companies will file a conciliation lawsuit this Thursday, demanding that he retract his statements and asserting that if he does not, they will pursue criminal action.

The Department of Agriculture sent inspectors this Tuesday to the Mirabo poultry farm in Manacor, operated by Avicola Son Perot. It did so following a complaint from animal rights organizations ARDE and Satya Animal, which brought the unsanitary conditions and potential animal welfare violations regarding the 40,000 hens at this intensive farm to the Prosecutor's Office. This was explained by the Minister of Agriculture, Joan Simonet, at noon today.

“We ask the Manacor City Council and the Government to stop this aberration which, among other things, will produce eight tons of manure daily. When it rains, they will intoxicate all the aquifers that reach the city,” denounced this Wednesday afternoon Sílvia Llull, one of those affected by the mega-farm of 80,000 laying hens that the company Avícola Son Perot wants to build on the Manacor estate of Son Brau.

The company Avícola Son Perot SA intends to carry out the construction of a new poultry farm for egg production on a plot located in the municipal district of Manacor, near the residential area of Son Talent, following the Ma-3322 road.

The head of Palma's Court of Instruction number 11 has dismissed the case of alleged animal abuse against the large poultry farm in Llucmajor, which was reported last year and where chickens lived alongside rats, filth, and the carcasses of other animals. According to the dismissal order, to which Europa Press had access, the investigations carried out did not substantiate the commission of any crime.

This Wednesday morning, the last truckload of chickens from the Avícola Son Perot farm in Llucmajor departed for the Spanish mainland. According to owner Onofre Ballester, speaking to ARA Baleares, this means the Llucmajor poultry farm has completed the de-escalation plan ordered by the Balearic Government in August. The government set a deadline of December 31st for the Llucmajor farm to cull chickens until its population was reduced to 40,000 due to an investigation opened against the farm following complaints from neighbors and several animal rights organizations that published videos showing birds in poor condition. Ballester explained that there are currently only 40,000 chickens left on the farm, and the rest had to be transported to slaughterhouses on the mainland to comply with the measure, "since there aren't any in the Balearic Islands," he criticized. All of this is happening against a backdrop of increased egg consumption in Spain. Demand for eggs has risen by approximately 20% since 2019, an increase attributed to the perceived nutritional and health benefits they have gained in recent years, according to the latest data published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. For this reason, Ballester considers the regulation "the world turned upside down; we're killing hens and there's a shortage of eggs."

Under pressure from the opposition, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Natural Environment, Joan Simonet, defended his handling of the situation at the Llucmajor chicken farm and criticized the Armengol government for "failing to act." Simonet explained that between 2016 and 2021, the farm housed 127,000 hens. "Didn't anyone see them?" he asked. He recalled that the farm's operations began in 2016 with 40,000 hens, but added that in 2023, a sanctioning procedure was initiated due to the increased capacity of the operation. Avícola Son Perot, the company behind the Llucmajor poultry farm, requested the legalization of the facilities and authorization for a capacity of 135,696 hens after receiving a sanction imposed by the government's environmental agency. In August, the integrated environmental permit for the farm was rejected, and it was decided that its capacity had to be reduced to a third (40,000 hens). Regarding this, Simonet explained that a total of 36,000 animals have already been removed from the farm and that the remaining 52,000 are scheduled to be removed by the end of this month. "The work done by the officials and the Directorate General is adequate, it is correct, no mistakes have been made," he insisted.

The Llucmajor City Council plenary session unanimously approved a motion this Thursday calling for the closure of the Son Perot Poultry Farm. The motions were approved, but subsequently not implemented. "Neither the mayor nor her government team will lift a finger to close the farm," criticized the Socialist spokesperson in the municipality, Jaume Oliver, according to the party in a press release reported by Europa Press.
