The housing crisis in Mallorca is reaching Pla little by little and it has a face and eyes, and in Porreres there is an example. A single-parent family from Porreres, made up of a mother and daughter, has turned what should have been a conventional advertisement looking for a rental apartment into an original protest publication through which they have wanted to make visible the reality of many families and also young people who find themselves with an increasingly inaccessible real estate market throughout Mallorca, and Pla is no exception.

The Pla de Mallorca Intermunicipal Association will receive a subsidy of €528,285 from the Balearic Government to cover the costs of transporting water by tanker truck during 2025. This is stated in the provisional resolution published in the BOIB (Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands) by the Ministry of the Sea and the lack of water resources, especially for municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. The Pla de Mallorca Intermunicipal Association is by far the main beneficiary of this subsidy program, far ahead of the other municipalities included in the annex, such as Banyalbufar (€57,294.50) or Estellencs (€1,690). According to official documentation, the intermunicipal body already advanced the funds and justified the payment on December 24, 2025, which allowed the Directorate General of Water Resources to validate the expenditure. As has been reported All Plans In recent years, the Pla de Mallorca region has suffered recurring and serious water supply problems, exacerbated by persistent drought, overexploitation of aquifers, and structural limitations of the network. The use of water tankers has once again become an essential emergency measure to guarantee the supply to some municipalities, especially Montuïri. However, both the town councils and the Mancomunidad (Association of Municipalities) have repeatedly warned that water transport cannot be a permanent solution due to its high economic cost and environmental unsustainability. The government subsidy helps alleviate the financial burden, but it again highlights the need for long-term investments in infrastructure, efficient management, and water resource reuse.

He assured that the Islands are in a "complicated but controlled" situation, although it is 10 points below last year's levels. The Director General pointed out that the Islands' water reserves are on "a clear path to recovery." In this regard, he exemplified that water reserves in Ibiza have increased by 19 percent compared to two months ago "due to the rains, which have raised reserves from 28% to 47%." In Mallorca, the increase has been 4%, and Menorca is the island where the percentage increase has been smallest – from 43% to 44% – due to the rainfall pattern. The Pla de Mallorca and Artà areas remain on alert. Ibiza has moved from alert to pre-alert due to the increase in rainfall. This has reduced the water supply for municipalities that were previously forced to purchase water.

With this work – which he will present this Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Sineu Town Hall auditorium – he aims to break with the "comparative injustice" that exists in relation to these wooded areas, little known despite their high value. In this regard, he exemplifies that in areas like the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, there are many protected lands that are even publicly owned. In contrast, he denounces that "publicly owned forests do not exist in the Pla, with the sole exception of the municipality of Lloret." Therefore, he asks the town councils and the Consell de Mallorca (Island Council of Mallorca) to acquire forests and pay attention to them, since they are true lungs of biodiversity. In addition to highlighting the wooded areas in the Pla, Vicens also wants to explain the current importance of the area's forest ecosystems. "Today we know that agroforestry mosaics, like those that have barely survived until now, are capable of providing more ecosystem services than other, more extensive and homogeneous landscapes. Science highlights the benefits of natural vegetation environments for agricultural systems: protection against soil loss, protection against the elements, natural pollination, improved water infiltration and storage, among others," he explains.

However, in recent years, a number of associations and organizations have emerged seeking to revitalize it, such as Isla Sonora (Porreres), Neura (Manacor), and Desánimo de Lucro (Vilafranca), among others, as well as Crui (Palma) and the Mocuco Association (Colonia de San Pedro). After four months of meetings and discussions, they have all come together with a common goal: to provide the Pla de Mallorca with a community space for musical creation, an initiative known as the Polígono Project.

And we know from experience that without gigs in sight, there's usually no rehearsal, and without rehearsal, bands eventually die." This is how Tià Lladó, a member of Reggaetonpare, explains it. He acknowledges that "if I had to start a band from scratch now, I might think about it more because there are not enough spaces that encourage a developing music scene." Meanwhile, Marina Viedma, a member of Es Gall de Sa Pastera, affirms that while musical creation in Mallorca is experiencing a good moment, the offer of venues to play is very limited. "There aren't many, and it often depends on the initiative of collectives that do what they can with the resources they have, whether to put on festivals or organize concerts," shares Viedma, who values certain institutional initiatives positively, but misses "a clear strategic line" in this regard.

Now, three years later, these old buildings are following a mixed path. UPA-AIA has just sold the house that was once owned by Montuïri. Unió de Pagesos, after an internal debate, will transfer the Sant Joan agricultural chamber to Ibavi, from which two or three social housing units could be created. Finally, Asaja has stated that it intends to maintain ownership of the Sencelles agricultural chamber and under no circumstances sell it.

A breakdown "would be very serious," admits a Water Resources technician. The aquifers in the greater Pitiusa region are at 34%. Any drop of four points would require an emergency declaration. The Pla de Mallorca is also experiencing a critical situation, especially in municipalities like Porreres, Algaida, and Montuïri. Without the truck trips, there would be no water for the supply, as the wells are dry. "In some towns, we're running out of water, and in others, there's no water at all. This has been going on for a long time. We're tired of repeating that we can't continue like this," says Joana Maria Pascual, president of the Plan Association.

The professors of Art History at the UIB (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) have done an excellent job of documenting and selecting materials and artifacts that help us reconstruct the history and experiences of the last four centuries of life at the top of the mountain. The exhibition is divided into four spaces where, based on the toponymy and history of the mountain and the Son Brugués estate, which gave its name to the hill, we can situate ourselves in this mountainous area halfway between Vilafranca, Sant Joan, and Petra.
