The delegation of the Spanish government in the Balearic Islands has asked the General Directorate of the Police to open a reserved information file to determine if some of the agents who intervened in the police charges last Sunday in Palma committed infractions liable to disciplinary sanction. The decision comes after a week marked by intense political and social controversy following the police action at the end of the demonstration against tourist overcrowding on July 26.

Les Voltes gathered 3,200 people this Wednesday evening during the event day of the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest. Three days earlier, the National Police had closed access to the same venue when there were only just over 500 participants in the demonstration against tourist overcrowding. The difference has raised questions because the closing of the gates was, according to the protest organizers, the origin of the tension that led to the police charges.

The demonstration that this Sunday marched through the center of Palma ended with moments of tension and charges by the National Police at the entrances to Les Voltes, after more than two hours of mobilization without incidents. Several people were injured by baton blows during the police intervention, which occurred when hundreds of demonstrators demanded to be able to access the final point of the route, where the manifesto was being read.

The Federation of Hotel Employers of Mallorca (FEHM) has called this Monday to "act" and "leave polarization behind" after Sunday's massive demonstration against tourist overcrowding. The entity's executive vice-president, María José Aguiló, has assured that the sector shares the social concerns expressed by protesters during the demonstration, but has warned that the debate about the future of the Islands "should not be reduced solely to tourist degrowth".

The delegate of the Spanish government in the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez, has distanced himself from the police action at the demonstration against tourist saturation, which he described as "disproportionate" in relation to the risk of a protest marked by "exemplary civic behavior". "Police charges depend on the "in situ operation, they are not decided by this delegate. The use of violence did not adjust to the risk," he stated this Monday, after the organizers of the protest and MÉS per Mallorca called for his resignation.

Not a single graffiti. Not a broken window. Not a single argument with the hundreds of tourists who were strolling through the center of Palma. Tens of thousands of people paraded this Sunday for more than two hours through the streets of the city in one of the most massive demonstrations in recent years without any incident occurring. The contrast with the end of the protest was absolute. When thousands of people were trying to reach Les Voltes to hear the reading of the manifesto, the National Police blocked the entrances and, a few minutes later, charged against the demonstrators with batons. Several videos recorded by attendees also show detonations during the police intervention.

Marga Prohens has avoided commenting on the National Police charges against the protesters. The president assures that she cannot determine if it was a "disproportionate" action, because she "does not know the circumstances under which it occurred" and also does not know "the orders they had received".

Tens of thousands of people, up to 70,000 according to the organization and 25,000 according to the always conservative calculations of the National Police, have taken the center of Palma and have shouted all kinds of slogans against the excess of tourism, with one idea above all others: a significant part of the island's society is tired of the collapse. The end of the demonstration turned out to be a real chaos because the planned space, les Voltes, has absolutely insufficient capacity for such a massive demonstration. The Police have closed the accesses to les Voltes, which has caused a strong confrontation among the demonstrators, because, after walking for more than an hour, most of the demonstrators have not managed to reach the end and have been dispersed throughout the Parc de la Mar, which has been filled with banners.

With her face hidden behind a skull mask and dressed as a peasant woman, Madò Farta began to make noise —despite being a mute figure shrouded in mystery— on social media in June of this year. Since then, this figure, halfway between a bogart and a feminist water spirit, has appeared both alone and supporting other calls, in most —if not all— of the protests against tourist overcrowding convened throughout Mallorca.

Palma will once again experience this Sunday, July 26, a new demonstration against tourist overcrowding. The mobilization, called by the platform Menys Turisme, Més Vida (Less Tourism, More Life) with the slogan 'Mallorca at its limit', will begin at 7 p.m. in Plaça d’Espanya and will tour several of the main streets in the center of Palma.

The call with the slogan ‘Mallorca on the limit’, scheduled for this Sunday, July 26, does not come after a specific episode. It is the result of a year marked by an escalation of mobilizations against the tourism model and, in recent weeks, by growing tension between citizen movements and institutions.

New graffiti against mass tourism have appeared this Wednesday in front of a real estate agency in the center of Palma, amid escalating tension around the debate on Mallorca's tourism model and just a few days before the demonstration planned for this Sunday, which is expected to be massive, called under the slogan 'Mallorca is at its limit'.

The GOB continues to warm up its engines for the demonstration against tourist overcrowding this Sunday, July 26, at 7 p.m. In a social media post, the environmental organization has published a list of reasons why they encourage the population to attend the rally to show their disagreement with the island's tourist and economic model and the consequences it has for residents.

The GOB has modified the organization of the human chain called for this Sunday, July 5, in defense of Trenc, after reaching an agreement with the organization of the solidarity day Mulla't per l'Esclerosi Mòltiple, which also takes place at the Club Nàutic de la Ràpita.

Various groups in defense of the right to housing have called for a rally this Sunday, June 21, at 12 p.m., in Plaça d’Espanya in Palma to denounce the housing situation in the Balearic Islands and protest against evictions carried out by administrations without offering residential alternatives.

Less Tourism, More Life has already set a date for the new protest against tourist saturation in the Balearic Islands: July 26th. This Sunday, June 7th, on the steps of the Cathedral, the organization will present both this call to action and other actions planned for this summer to fight against massification and the economic and tourism model of the Archipelago.

The anti-fascist group Mallorca has gone to La Feixina to disinfect it after the demonstration by Núcleo Nacional this Sunday. On their social media they made a publication where members of the group are seen dressed in PPE and with mops and disinfectant elements to clean the area where the ultra group demonstrated. A demonstration that was a total failure, since, in fact, there were more journalists covering the event than people demonstrating.

More than a hundred people gathered this Friday on the Born promenade in Palma, called by UGT, to protest against a state agreement in the commerce sector that, according to the union, could mean a reduction in salary and rights for thousands of workers in the Islands.

Palma experienced a demonstration this Sunday on the occasion of Palestinian Land Day that brought together about 200 people. The mobilization, called by the platform Citizens for Palestine, set off from the Pere Garau neighborhood and paraded through several streets in the center with Palestinian flags and banners demanding an end to the war in Gaza.

More than a hundred residents of Palma have joined this Saturday in a human chain to show their rejection of the construction of a car park and other municipal facilities on the plots adjacent to the old Gesa building.
