Demonstrating with neo-Nazis

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/demonstrating-with-neo-nazis_129_5842268.html

A graphic example of what the expression ‘cringe’ means is to see your own institutional representatives walking the streets alongside far-right and neo-Nazi groups, in a demonstration where racist and hateful shouts are uttered, and where the preferred chant includes the expression ‘son of a bitch’, in this case directed at the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez. The President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, participated in a demonstration with these characteristics, and immediately afterwards she posted a funny tweet, because it explained another demonstration that had not happened. In the original version, President Prohens tweeted the following: “Ceuta is not alone. [Dramatic pause]. Thousands of us have taken to the streets to convey all our support to the people of Ceuta and to say loud and clear that Ceuta is not for negotiation and that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Spain are not for sale. [Dramatic pause]. We are all Ceuta”. The tweet did nothing more than reproduce the Partit Popular's talking points just as they had sent them from Madrid, which is the speech that President Prohens usually offers. This time, without translating it, or anything. Very well. It is a pity that reality has nothing to do with all of this. What is happening in Ceuta is a deep migratory, humanitarian, and political crisis, in which Spain's unity and territorial integrity have nothing to do with it, except for those who actually believe that the seventy thousand people who entered on July 30th and 31st from Morocco are an “invasion”. They must be Boabdil's troops, returning to reconquer Granada five hundred years later. What is happening in Ceuta, also, is a geopolitical conflict in which the main objective (of powers like Russia, Israel, or Trump's USA) is the destabilization of Europe, and in which the Spanish border is used to achieve it. The border and the Moroccan civilian population, with more than 140 dead and hundreds or thousands of people abandoned to their fate. The demonstration that President Prohens attended was not about any of that. It was a demonstration, by the way, in which the Police refrained from striking a single blow with a baton, despite the decidedly aggressive manners of many of the participants. The demonstration, in fact, should not be considered as such: the ‘demonstrations’ attended by the far right and neo-Nazis use one of the fundamental rights of democracy, which is the right to demonstrate, to make a public exhibition of brute force. An exercise in intimidation: shouts with insults, racist proclamations, and the demand to put an end to those considered “enemies of the fatherland” are nothing else. Fascism (which in Spain is cloaked in neo-Francoism) has always functioned in this way: seeking intimidation through hatred and brute force. The Popular Party no longer flirts or dallies with fascism, but has joined it definitively, has adopted its discourse as its own, and strives to whitewash and normalize it. President Prohens, as she has always done otherwise, obeys orders and, if she must let herself be photographed next to individuals with their arms raised in the Roman salute or next to individuals who exhibit the neo-Nazi imagery of groups like Plus Ultra, she does so. If anyone ever takes the trouble to remember Prohens' term (some idler with an interest in insignificant things will have to do it), these photos will look very bright in her biography.

Curiously, the last summer of the legislative term has served for the PP to close the circle: Marga Prohens the term began with massive protests against saturation, and it ends the same way. However, there is a difference, because in the summer of 2023 the police did not assault the protesters. The island society continues to await the report commissioned by the Spanish government delegate, Alfonso Rodriguez, who assured that he had given instructions to remain calm. Better not to think what would have happened if he hadn't given them.

As if an exceptional astronomical phenomenon were not about to occur. On the way to the terraces of Es Baluard, a street vendor was placing, bored, his straw hats. "Do you have glasses?". He shook his head because he knew they were asking him for the eclipse ones. Already at the top of the museum, a foreign couple had decided to cut in half the only pair they had and their children were looking at the Sun with one eye and covering the other with a hand.

Below these top figures there is a second and third level of senior officials who are key players in the functioning of the Administration. These are secretaries and general directors, managers and advisors who are known by the Italianism sottogoverno. This legislature has seen a high turnover among these trusted positions. In three years, there have been 142 changes of position: 68.27% of senior officials have changed ownership or responsibilities. And, after the police charges of 26-J, the narrative of tourist saturation has been sidelined in the media by another debate much more comfortable for Marga Prohens' Government. It is important not to lose focus, because the president is one of the main people responsible for responding to the problems that the tourism model generates in the daily lives of the citizens of the Balearic Islands. The day after one of the most massive protests ever seen in the Islands, Prohens has not felt the need to face the situation, nor to give explanations about the lack of management, nor to confront her unfulfilled promises. The president has spoken about the charges, has demanded explanations from the Spanish government delegate, Alfonso Rodríguez, and has remarked that she respects the right to demonstrate, as if that were not a given.

The Executive has deployed measures to regulate tourist rentals, but the fiscal initiatives for containment announced this legislature – such as the Sustainable Tourism Tax, the water levy, and for rental cars – have not materialized. The containment advocated by the Executive is not reflected, at the moment, in the arrival figures: in 2025, a new record was broken with more than 19 million tourists in the Balearic Islands. "We understand the discomfort," said the first vice-president, Antoni Costa, about Sunday's demonstration against saturation: "We can be told that the measures are insufficient (...), but we have taken them."

Perhaps only ETA and Catalans could compete with one of the common talking points in the discourse of the Spanish right and far-right: Venezuela. The land of Simón Bolívar is a cliché whenever the time approaches for the increasingly prolonged electoral campaigns, and it is easy for a PP or VOX politician, when at a loss for words, to resort to the disaster that Chavismo has entailed in that country. It is curious, however, to see that when it suits them, they also know how to take advantage of the resources of this banana republic regime, and a few days ago, the citizens of the Balearic Islands had a magnificent and very graphic example of this.Friday, July 3rd in the evening. Sílvia Pol, director of news at IB3, interviews the president of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens. And we must call it an interview because that's how the program was announced, but in reality, it seemed more like a 'Balearic style' adaptation of the famous and populist Aló Presidente, the program that Hugo Chávez hosted for more than a decade on Venezuelan state radio and television channels. Here, however, decorum prevails, and the president was kind enough to have an assistant in her conduction, who was responsible for passing the cards of the various topics and electoral proposals with a smile between admiration and understanding, all interspersed with effective and almost imperceptible dialectical massages.During the conversation, without any questioning from Pol, Prohens was able to unfold the arguments that the PP has repeated for years; that of "keeping their word" and "being the party that most resembles the citizens of these Islands". In fact, she felt so comfortable that she took a step further, in a gesture that shows how much her party takes for granted that they will continue in the Executive for at least four more years: she declared, without batting an eyelid, that she also believes that "El Trenc must not be touched", that they have advocated for the Decree of minimums and the Law of linguistic normalization "and that this annoys the left, because the PP is doing it". She even suggested, in response to a question from Pol, which was more like a pass to score a goal than a question, that the tourist overcrowding that our Islands are suffering from was the fault of Armengol and the Pact of progress that she led, that perhaps they did not do enough. She also stated that her Government has agreed on laws with all parties in the parliamentary arc, which is true, but it was a pity to see how Pol did not ask her about her main partner when it came to repealing the Law of historical memory, segregating children in schools for language reasons, and making the LGBTIQ+ collective invisible in the institutional sphere. They say that if it doesn't bother, it's not journalism, but advertising. And I think we have to take our hats off: on July 3rd, the citizens of the Balearic Islands were able to admire, paid for with public money, the first big campaign advertisement for the 'comandanta' Prohens.
