The Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO) of the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) managed 10,129,062 euros in 2025 for research and innovation, providing 3.6% more funds than the previous year. “The evolution of the UIB's transfer office is very positive: we are obtaining more resources, signing more contracts, and developing more projects”, summarized this Tuesday at a press conference the vice-rector for Innovation and Digital Transformation of the university, Lorenza Carrasco, who gave as an example of this commitment that the office has gone from having five people to twelve.

The National Police are investigating the owners of the house that collapsed and killed an 18-year-old in Manacor last January. According to police sources, they are being investigated as suspected perpetrators of manslaughter as a result of the fatal collapse. This investigation follows the discovery that illegal construction work was carried out on the property a year ago and that the debris was stored on the terrace, which could have been one of the reasons the roof collapsed.

The Balearic Islands Health Research Institute (IdISBa) has secured €1,042,775 in the 2025 call for proposals from the Carlos III Health Institute's Strategic Action in Health program, one of the main competitive funding lines for biomedical research in Spain. According to a statement from the Balearic Government, this financial boost strengthens the islands' research capacity and consolidates IdISBa's presence in high-impact scientific projects. Within the framework of the State Program for Research and Experimental Development, the institute is participating in nine health R&D&I projects, with total funding of €827,875. The Civil Guard is investigating a 21-year-old woman for driving at over 180 km/h on a section of the highway between Palma and Alcúdia with an 80 km/h speed limit. In a press release, the Civil Guard reported that the Traffic Group in the Balearic Islands is investigating a young driver as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against road safety, for driving at more than twice the speed limit on a section of the Ma-13 highway where the maximum speed limit is 80 km/h. The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 9, when the driver of a sports car, traveling on the Ma-13 highway at kilometer 39.400 towards Alcúdia, was caught by a radar vehicle in the section where the Civil Guard patrols the 80 km/h zone.

A team of researchers from the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA) and the Cleanwave Foundation's MedGardens initiative have identified new techniques to promote the recovery of Posidonia seagrass meadows. The study, reported by the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) in a press release, analyzes different replanting procedures for this emblematic Mediterranean plant. The research was carried out in the bays of Formentor and Portocolom (Mallorca) and identified the most favorable options for enabling the natural recovery of degraded meadows, which until now had met with limited success. It compares, for the first time, different anchoring methods and evaluates both their ecological effectiveness and other practical factors such as cost, supply, carbon footprint, and logistics. After two years of monitoring, researchers have shown that gardening claws and bamboo stakes are the most efficient and sustainable options, boasting a 94% survival rate, low cost, and minimal environmental impact. "The research demonstrates that Posidonia seagrass meadows can be restored in a more affordable and environmentally friendly way by integrating ecological, economic, and logistical criteria. This is key to designing viable and sustainable long-term restoration projects," the study's authors emphasized.

The National Police Homicide Unit is investigating the death of a 15-year-old girl found dead in her Palma apartment. Pending the autopsy results, all indications point to a domestic accident that caused her death by drowning, and the possibility of foul play has been ruled out, police sources told Europa Press. The teenager had injuries to her neck when she was found by relatives.

An autopsy has revealed that the woman found dead last Sunday morning in Les Pujols (Formentera) did not die of violent causes. The Civil Guard has thus ruled out the possibility of domestic violence, as stated by the Government Delegation against Gender Violence.
