The tourist season begins and with it comes May Day, a day of protest and struggle for the working class. A time when our islands begin to be full of tourists; there is a lot of work, but, even so, we must raise our voices to say that we have an economic model that suffocates us and expels us. There are many problems that we workers have, including precarious employment, temporality, workloads that make us sick, lack of economic resources, and our biggest problem, a housing market that is unaffordable for those of us who live on wages from work. All this, in an environment where year after year we break tourism records, have more spending per visitor, and business margins rise. We all know it, this model is over, it must be transformed to be sustainable. The question is: how? While our rulers tangle themselves by modifying their discourse according to the wind's direction in order to change nothing, at the union we have designed a roadmap to follow in order to move towards sustainable Balearic Islands. This is a proposal for action for a change in economic model that leads us towards Balearic Islands that are economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable. This transition must be orderly and just, and for this reason, it is important to anticipate.Given this complexity, it is necessary that the proposal be defined by a few simple, high-impact actions that foster the start of change quickly. In parallel, the labor area must be worked on, placing special emphasis on training and qualification as the backbone of the new economic model. Thus, if we want to transition to a model with more added value, focused on value and not on volume, we must start by reducing the number of visitors. For this reason, we propose an increase and revision of the tourist tax. This should be dissuasive, flexible, and temporary. It is also important to focus on tourist places and postpone the granting of new ones in any form in order to eliminate obsolete supply, pending an objective analysis of the Islands' carrying capacity, which takes into account the floating population. Regarding environmental management, it is necessary to monitor the circularity plans of tourist establishments, increase the percentage of commitment to local product consumption, and extend this obligation to other non-food products. All of this must be accompanied by the promotion of public transport, with increased frequencies and free travel, and a plan for fleet renewal with zero emissions. But all these changes are impossible without the support of working people, with the improvement of the quality of employment and the promotion and recognition of training adequate to the new challenges of the world of work. The changes will happen and we cannot allow them to be made without the involvement of working people. We must demand participation, recognition, and shared decisions. Capital cannot make decisions outside of the working class. For this reason, and because together we are strong, we must take to the streets this May Day.

In a statement, the union points out that the office reopened last May after being closed for a period of time, and that it did so, they allege, "without being in adequate condition." A few months later, in June, a report from the occupational risk prevention service already identified several "significant deficiencies" in the facilities. According to CCOO, these deficiencies have persisted, and the organization also states that some of the existing deficiencies were not even included in the initial report. Given this situation, the union submitted a new risk assessment at the end of December, which led to a new health and safety report prepared at the beginning of January. This second document, according to the CCOO union, highlights the absence of a maintenance contract guaranteeing the periodic inspection of the facilities and the proper cleaning of the premises, which prevents the implementation of the urgent measures recommended in previous reports. The union presented the situation to the health and safety committee on January 30th and demanded a response from the municipal administration to guarantee the safety of the staff. Given the lack of response, CCOO has decided to take the case to the Labor Inspectorate.

The assailant began punching the employee in the face after the employee reminded him of the airline's baggage policy, as the man and his partner had three suitcases and could either take only two or check the third. According to sources from the Workers' Commissions (CCOO) union, the passenger, without any prior argument, went directly to punch the employee in the face, leaving him no chance to defend himself or see the attack coming. Due to the severity of the attack, the victim suffered a dislocated jaw and lost five teeth. Medical services treated him at the scene. The National Police arrested the assailant. However, the union regrets that the professionals' response could have been faster if the airport had the necessary protocols and resources—demands that, according to CCOO, have been made for some time to guarantee "full" security. CCOO has condemned the attack, considering it "completely unacceptable" that passengers react violently against airport workers. Furthermore, they have reminded airlines that they must guarantee support, advice, and compensation for victims. The union indicated that it will contact Aena to review the current situation, as they believe it is necessary to review and improve security measures, "while also emphasizing the importance of airlines being aware of situations that can increase the risk of attacks and, therefore, taking measures to prevent them." "We stand in solidarity with the assaulted worker and demand a review of current security measures," they stated in a press release. The CCOO union will contact Aena to review the current situation and improve security measures at the airport.

The union, in a statement outlining the events as reported by the workers themselves, also highlights alleged falsification of daily reports, cash payments without social security contributions, employees being denied vacation time, per diems "disguised and misappropriated" as advances, and transfers to the Spanish mainland without prior agreement.

The CCOO union in the Balearic Islands joined the criticism of the Balearic Government's Pact for Sustainability, lamenting the lack of "concrete objectives and pace," as highlighted by the union's general secretary in the Islands, José Luis García, and reported by Europa Press. In fact, the lack of objectives and plans for implementing measures have been two of the main reasons why civil society organizations no longer participate in the Pact. The Civil Society Forum, GOB, the Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Palma, EAPN, and OCB have all withdrawn from this initiative, which they also accuse of lacking transparency in its operation. CCOO has demanded that the Government begin acting "right now" with transformative policies. "We need the Pact to be real. CCOO will not play the role of a mere follower of any government," García warned in an appearance to assess the situation in 2025. The general secretary pointed out that the union perceives a lack of progress because "there are no clear objectives" to guide government action. Furthermore, García lamented that public policies are not aimed at solving citizens' problems. He also asserted that the union "will not be able to continue working" if "people's real problems are not addressed." Despite positive labor market figures, CCOO points out that "they are not enough to generate well-being" for the working class in the Balearic Islands. One of García's demands is that housing be placed at the heart of public policies and that efforts be made to address the gap between wages and purchasing power. After a 2025 without substantial answers to the problems faced by citizens, the general secretary predicts that precarious employment will persist in broad sectors of society in 2026. In addition to expanding the public housing stock, the union is calling for a crackdown on real estate speculation and a housing pact for the Canary Islands.

The union also demands that, in the 0-2 age group, the ratios be one educator for every four or five children. These demands come after the Ministry of Education and Universities presented the draft of the new decree that will regulate school cafeterias, a document that will be taken to the Participation Committee next week. In a statement, CCOO expressed its "outright rejection" of the Government's proposal, which it considers "unfeasible, disconnected from the educational reality, and failing to incorporate the demands of the sector, unions, social organizations, and families." The union also regrets that the Regional Ministry did not consult "the sector's largest union" and that the text was drafted "without regard for the needs" of the workers.
