The plenary session of the Parliament unanimously opposed this Tuesday the advertising campaign of 'Malle' by a German financial group. Furthermore, with the PSIB voting against it, it has censured both the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, and the president of Aena, Maurici Lucena, both for inaction in removing this advertisement and for promoting airport policies against the interests of the citizens of the islands, including the expansion of Ibiza airport.

Thus, with this word, ‘Malle’, the slogan of a huge advertising billboard that you can see on the facade of the Son Sant Joan airport car park refers to the island, and which has caused disgust due to the idea it conveys about Mallorca, as a place of uncontrolled tourism where anything goes and one doesn't need to be picky about anything. You can read in ARA Balears's chronicle by Aina Vidal about the billboard and the controversy it has generated. The slogan in question is written only in German: “Was auf Malle passiert, wird auf Malle beglichen”, that is, “What happens in Mallorca is settled in Mallorca”. The reference to “settlement” is understandable because the advertising company is Wero, a digital payment service —like PayPal and Bizum— designed to operate within Europe. The advertisers' ingenuity cannot be disputed. What they are trying to tell German tourists (who are the target audience of the advertisement) is: “pay for your parties in Mallorca with Wero”. Pardon: not “in Mallorca”, but “in Malle”. What does “Malle” have to do with Mallorca?” It has to do with the fact that it is a diminutive, a kind of nickname that aims to be affectionate and at the same time roguish, for a place of ill repute. It plays on the reference to Las Vegas (the famous phrase ‘what happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas’) and simply starts from the idea that Mallorca is a destination for beach, sex, and drunkenness tourism. It is not the equivalent of Mallorqueta or sa Roqueta, bland and prim denominations, which the most smug Majorcans still use to reduce themselves to a commonplace (which is not the same as a toilet). Malle has a resonance more of party, more nocturnal, more rowdy. It is the diminutive that the vicious but not very vicious, those who allow themselves an excess from time to time because they can afford it, give to the place they go to be naughty without having to give explanations. This is Malle: an island where it doesn't matter if it's five or fifty, where you don't have to worry about anyone being offended by your behavior, because what they want is for you to go there to lose yourself. All you need is money in your current account and a digital platform for small payments to cover the cost of your vice. The rest is secondary, starting with the native population of Malle, a completely irrelevant and despicable people, starting with their language. It is possible that you may encounter some of these natives, but do not pay the slightest attention to them. All this is also stated by Wero's sign on the facade of the Son Sant Joan car park: not in the text but in the subtext and context, which are equally important. To advertise like this (without even respecting that signage, by law, must be at least in Catalan, and also in Spanish) is an act of arrogance and contempt for which Aena is also responsible, allowing its advertisers to advertise in this way (the same Aena that also wants to double the capacity of Ibiza airport, because it is the main competitor in the race to finish squeezing the Balearic Islands and the Pitiusas until the last drop of juice they can give). The main responsible parties, however, are we Majorcans ourselves, who for decades have persisted in presenting ourselves as an island of greedy people fascinated by easy money, to the point of allowing anyone who fancies it to advertise at the airport —the gateway to the island, the first thing anyone arriving finds— saying that this place here is ca na Brutes and that it doesn't matter to suffer for anything, the only thing to do is pay and no one will say a peep. The saddest thing is that they are right. Welcome to Malle, Majorcans.

At least, they are not what the Eivissa Council would want, which officially defends that the island has already reached its peak in terms of visitors. So much so that, in Eivissa, just like in Formentera, the number of vehicles that can access it by sea during the summer is limited and regulated. But in Eivissa, visitors arrive mainly by air. And many arrive. Only until April, 1,374,000 passengers have already passed through the Codolar airport. Almost triple those who have passed through Menorca in the same period; let this comparison serve to give an idea of the impact of the Eivissa airport. And the peak season has not yet begun, at the end of the year there will surely be more than 9 million.

A friend from the Principality who has a great pull towards the Islands once told me that being Mallorcan basically meant three things: suffering, going to pick up people at the airport, and being told more often than you'd like that “you would know her if you saw her”.I believe the first idea explains itself, and it goes far beyond dialectal particularism: one only needs to look at the situation the Islands are going through in areas such as housing, environmental destruction, and the social use of language to understand that we fully meet this requirement. The other, the one that says "if you saw it, you would know it," is perhaps just as annoying, but sooner or later it comes true: the thing about telling someone from Catalonia or the Valencian Country where you are from and them saying "oh, yes, I have a friend from Mallorca, maybe you know each other," and after denying it, realizing that yes, indeed, you know that Xisca from Sencelles or Sineu. Or someone from your own town or neighborhood, whom you might not know by name, but by appearance. And the airport? That was the idea that impressed me the most, because it went beyond the traditional everydayness suggested by the other two (“a way of being”, as the very wise and pacifying current Government would say) and captured an experience that is certainly true, but which has not been so for so many years. After the tourist boom of the sixties, the natural, economic, and social appearance of the Islands has changed from top to bottom, and airports, those non-places that are not places because they precisely take us to other places, have played a key role. For decades, hotel companies and airlines have enriched themselves by dividing the cake as they pleased, and the same has been done by Aena, the company responsible for their management. A company, yes. A commercial society that is public, but that does not always respond to everyone's interests. Who decides how many flights can pass through an airport each day? Who decides where the money is invested? Where do the profits of the busiest airports in the State go, among which those in the Catalan Countries (Barcelona, Palma, Valencia, Ibiza…) win by a landslide? It seems that with this spirit of oversight and reinforcement of public service, from the minimal sovereignties recognized by the 2007 Statute, Parliament has just approved an organic law proposal for the co-management of the Archipelago's airports, at the proposal of Ara MÉS. An initiative that should allow the Government of the Balearic Islands to decide on the flight cap, master plans, and the load capacity of these facilities, and which will add the voice of the councils and town councils in decision-making.The proposal has moved forward and now begins its path to Congress. Will it have as much luck as the recognition of its own senator for Formentera, despite the complications in its processing, or will it be like the other twenty times Parliament has spoken in favor of the issue? Time, and above all, the consistency of each party, will tell us. Sovereignty, aerial in this case, was also that.

https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/the-million_129_5707788.html

The endowment of a new literary prize in the Spanish state has caused some controversy. In theory, according to the rules, the books that can be awarded one million euros by Aena have been published the previous year in one of the official languages of the State, although, now that we know who the five finalists were (all will receive 30,000 euros, except the winner, Samanta Schweblin, who will take the million) they are in Spanish. Catalan authors could opt for it, provided that the work has a Spanish translation, since it seems that juries do not necessarily have to know how to read in Catalan, Basque or Galician. I don't know what happens with works written in other official languages that are published in Spanish but not in the same year as their original publication: we can assume that they are no longer eligible for prizes. This enormously hinders any author in Catalan, for example, from ever being able to aspire to this award, even being a finalist is already a pipe dream. In this first call, which could be programmatic, all the books have been in Spanish. When an author wins the Planeta prize, now endowed with a million, they don't really win any prize: they receive an advance on sales, so that if the book sold more than a million copies, money would still have to be added (which I don't think has ever happened…). The Planeta is for an unpublished work, for a typescript that authors submit to the award; but not this new Aena prize, which recognizes a work that is already published, and which, as we can see, has a more literary profile, or more of a personal and 'risky' literature, beyond formulaic novels or more or less successful successful strategies that sell well and tend to feed the publishing business. But the endowment of this prize –so large– is raising a certain controversy, for its nouveau riche character, for the brutal ostentation of power (the company Aena is half public) and for the imbalance, I would like to add, with the finalists, or with what has been done –ignoring them– with other books published in also official languages. It is very likely that none of the current finalists will ever sniff such a sum of money again (not even by winning the Nobel, as Vila-Matas, another finalist, is said to be able to do). Such an award can put an end to a writer's literary career, needless to say: it can professionalize them, if that is what they desire, but it will also draw a spotlight on their work that can be counterproductive, or even unnecessary. Because one thing is to make a living selling books to readers who appreciate you, and another is to be able to retire because an institution – an airport one – has chosen you more for the benefit of its cultural prestige than for yours. And all in a week in which we have learned that a lot of Catalan publishing houses see their survival in danger because it turns out they don't have I don't know what seal that certifies the environmentalism of the paper they print with… And when newspapers publish less serious literary criticism than ever in their history, criticism that should arbitrate taste much better and much sooner than the juries of writers who judge other writers (who will judge them in the future).

In a statement, the organizations that make up the platform—including the GOB (Balearic Ornithological Group)—express "serious social concern" about the direction of Aena's airport policy, which—they claim—has the approval of both the Spanish government and the Balearic government. The activists recall that the Dora II Plan (2019-2025) already expanded the facilities, with more walkways, the widening of Terminals A and D in Palma, and increased parking capacity. But they warn that the future Dora III Plan (2027-2031) "is a ticking time bomb": it plans to allocate 600 million euros to Palma within a total package of 13 billion euros across Spain.

The petition, launched a few months ago both digitally and in person, has garnered nearly a thousand signatures through the Change.org platform and more than 1,200 signatures collected in the streets and squares of the municipality. This figure adds to the more than 1,200 objections already submitted against the declaration of the project as being of strategic industrial interest. Despite this sustained citizen support, the platform denounces a complete lack of institutional response. They assert that, after more than two months of requesting meetings, they have still not been received by the President of the Balearic Government, Margalida Prohens. They also don't hide their displeasure with the attitude of the mayor of Marratxí, Jaume Llompart, whom they accuse of avoiding clear explanations about the project's true status and the steps taken by the authorities.
