The infrastructure, expected to be operational by 2033, will represent a significant expansion of the urban rail network and improve connections to several neighborhoods and key facilities in the city. The project envisions a route of approximately six kilometers, although only four will be newly constructed and entirely underground. The line will depart from the Intermodal Station and utilize the existing Jacint Verdaguer and Son Costa stations, extending with new stops at Son Hugo, Son Rossinyol, Son Espases, and Secar de la Real, before reaching Son Serra Perera.

Palma's Intermodal Station has opened two new escalators at the main entrance, marking the first renovation of this equipment since its installation nearly twenty years ago. This action is part of a comprehensive infrastructure renovation project, which includes a total investment of €3.6 million to improve accessibility, safety, and comfort for public transport users. The Minister of Housing, Territory, and Mobility, José Luis Mateo, visited the station on Monday to mark the opening of the new escalators and highlighted the investment plan aimed at modernizing the Intermodal Station. The installation is part of the ongoing renovation of the station's ten escalators. Last March, four escalators were replaced, those providing access to the train and metro platforms operated by Servicios Ferroviarios de Mallorca (SFM). In November, work began to renovate the access points to the concourse, with the dismantling of two of the four exterior staircases, which are now operational again. In the coming days, one of the staircases leading down to the bus bays will also begin operating, completing the first phase of the renovation. The second phase, planned for the second quarter of 2026, will include the remaining staircases. This is the first comprehensive renovation of these staircases since the station's opening in 2007. More improvements underway

The comprehensive renovation includes other actions such as the installation of new, larger, and more accessible public restrooms; the replacement of the tactile paving to facilitate movement for people with visual impairments; the creation of 72 new bicycle parking spaces to promote sustainable mobility and intermodality; and the transformation of the customer service office into a larger and more functional space, with improvements to the waiting areas. Among the actions already completed are the installation of new information screens between the end of 2024 and 2025 to improve communication with travelers, as well as the installation, last summer, of industrial fans in the TIB bus terminal to improve ventilation in the bus bays. More users, more demands

The renovation also responds to the sustained increase in users that Intermodal has experienced since its opening. In just six years, the number of passengers has almost tripled: from 5.8 million in 2019 to more than 16.5 million by the end of 2025. The project is part of the 'Islands in Transformation' Infrastructure Plan and is financed primarily with European Next Generation funds.

"Back to routine": always negative, laden with regret. They've commercialized routine in favor of various gurus who promise to "say goodbye to it," as if solving a problem we didn't even know we had. Against routine, they've glorified the life of the digital nomad, the expat, working from the beach, weekend getaways. And, little by little, they've stripped it of its sacredness, its customary rituals, its everyday life, what happens to us all, the only things that unite us and make us equal: the coffee at the bar, the public transport card, the shopping cart. Routine is what makes us human, it's what makes us good people for a while. There's a touch of classism in the hatred of routine, in the resistance to being like a character from Tell me how it happenedThat is, a person who could be any one of us, interchangeable. There's a sense of superiority, of believing oneself less mortal than the rest, oblivious to the forces of nature.

https://en.arabalears.cat/society/mallorca-sets-historic-record-for-public-transport-over-41-million-journeys-in-one-year_1_5637740.html

Intercity public transport in Mallorca reached another record high in 2025. Throughout the past year, the train, metro, and TIB buses carried a total of 41.3 million journeys, a figure that consolidates the upward trend of recent years and places the system above the 40 million user mark. This data represents a 5% increase compared to 2024 and a 23% increase compared to 2023, two years in which public transport was also free for users. Growth, therefore, continues despite the normalization of service and confirms a gradual shift in mobility habits on the island. By mode of transport, TIB intercity buses accounted for the majority of journeys, with 29.7 million trips, 5% more than the previous year. The train recorded 9.2 million users, a 4% increase, while the metro saw the greatest growth, with 2.4 million journeys, an 11% increase. One of the most relevant elements of the data is the growing proportion of residents, who now represent 76% of total users. Overall, the use of public transport by the resident population increased by 8%, with a 9% increase in intercity buses and a 6% increase in rail services. This means that 94% of train and metro journeys are made by Mallorca residents, as well as 68% of journeys on TIB buses, an indicator that points to the consolidation of public transport as a regular option beyond peak tourist seasons.

The management of Mallorca Railway Services (SFM) took a step towards dialogue with the works council on Tuesday, after workers agreed in an assembly to call partial strikes to demand improvements in the safety of the railway network. The meeting, scheduled for Wednesday morning, aims to defuse the conflict before the protest materializes. Union representatives and the management of the public company will meet at the headquarters to open a channel of dialogue based on the demands expressed by the workers, who announced the mobilizations after months of complaints about deficiencies in infrastructure safety, equipment maintenance, and other technical aspects of the network. During the first assembly, held on Monday, delegates approved by majority vote the call for work stoppages, likely compatible with the nationwide train drivers' strike scheduled for February 9, 10, and 11, although the protest has not yet been formally registered. The unions argued that the action is not intended as an attack on the service, but rather as a tool to denounce situations they consider unsustainable and that endanger both staff and passengers. The works council has confirmed it will attend the meeting "in a constructive spirit, but with the firmness the situation demands," according to a statement released this Tuesday. The unions emphasized that their goal is to reach "concrete and binding" agreements on safety, with effective measures and clear commitments to prevent the recurrence of risky situations. "Safety is non-negotiable," they stressed. The call for partial strikes comes in a context marked by the train accidents in Adamuz (Córdoba) and Gelida (Barcelona), fatal incidents that have reopened the debate on the safety standards of Spanish railway infrastructure and which SFM workers have cited as a point of reference to justify their actions. For their part, SFM management and the Balearic Government have issued reassuring messages to the public, maintaining that the railway network in Mallorca is safe and that historic investments have been made in the safety and maintenance of trains, tracks, and associated systems. The Minister of Mobility, José Luis Mateo, expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue but emphasized the need for union demands to be "specific and well-founded."

Mallorca Railway Services (SFM) has announced a doubling of the investment allocated to its new passenger information and assistance service. This service, part of a contract valid until 2030, will introduce an artificial intelligence (AI) system to provide automated responses to the most common queries. The contract allocates €1.16 million for the first two years, with the possibility of further increases, compared to the €483,418 budgeted for the 2020-2024 period. According to the Ministry of Mobility, this increase will allow for a shift towards a more comprehensive, accessible model, better adapted to the real needs of rail network users. Once the new framework is in effect, passenger information and assistance will be provided continuously, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with a faster response to incidents, timetable changes, or complaints. In addition, the service will expand its communication channels: screens and public address systems in stations, information systems on trains, a website, social media (Instagram and X), WhatsApp, and telephone support. The AI system will provide immediate and automated answers to frequently asked questions with an intuitive, multilingual design accessible to people with disabilities. Information coordination with the TIB bus service will also be strengthened to offer consistent and up-to-date information to users combining different modes of transport. The budget increase will allow for extended service hours, enhanced coverage during peak periods, and improved continuous monitoring of facilities, with the aim of reducing service disruptions and increasing the reliability and safety of the network.

Government spokesperson Antoni Costa explained that the 100% discount on public transport fares for users of the single or intermodal card, which has been in place since 2023, will therefore be extended. He stated that this is a fund co-financed by the central government, which has contributed 63 million euros to transport. Costa welcomed the fact that Pedro Sánchez's government has increased resources for transport in the Balearic Islands, given that the central government's contribution in 2024 was 43 million euros. "We hope that the figure will be maintained or increased for 2026," he added. However, he emphasized that in 2024 the total cost of public transport in the Balearic Islands was €150 million, and therefore the regional government continues to allocate more than half of the total expenditure. "Public transport across the islands costs €100 million, especially Palma's EMT (municipal transport company)," he said. In this regard, the spokesperson insisted that the number of users continues to grow, and the forecast is that the overall cost of the service will be higher.

The project, which will be carried out and is expected to be completed throughout 2026, represents a total investment of €3.6 million. The main improvement is the installation of new escalators. The Minister of Housing, Territory, and Mobility, José Luis Mateo, presented the improvements to the Intermodal Station. This is the first renovation of the station in nearly 20 years, since its inauguration in 2007, and aims to modernize the facilities to create a more comfortable and safer space for users in three main areas: climate control, user information, and the creation of new spaces.

For the past two years, history has been repeating itself, and every day more families join the struggle. In Pollença, Alcudia, Santa Margalida, Muro, and Can Picafort, the anxiety of arriving on time to the Joan Taix Integrated Vocational Training Center in Sa Pobla has become a collective battle affecting more than 600 students throughout the northern region. It's a problem that no one is resolving and, according to the families, is jeopardizing their future careers before they even begin. The situation hasn't changed in recent years despite the protests: young people arrive late due to public transport schedules and routes, and these delays translate into absences that count. And they count for a lot. Under current regulations, accumulating 25% absences means losing a place in the vocational training program. And the students at Joan Taix are simply at a disadvantage. "The bus drops them off at the Sa Pobla cemetery, and they have to walk across the entire town to get to the center. They're late every day," explains Maria Antònia, the mother of one of the affected students. She's not speaking for herself: she's speaking on behalf of dozens of families who have been living with this stressful, anxious routine of impossible deadlines for two years. "If they're five minutes late and there's an exam, they're not allowed in. And that's an unexcusable absence. We find it unfair because it's not up to them," she laments. A struggle that goes back a long way

This mother vividly remembers that when she studied at the same school, they were already experiencing a similar problem. Even so, the situation was better: "There was a bus that picked up students from Pollença and took them directly to Joan Taix. Santa Margalida and Muro traveled together on another bus, and Alcúdia and Pollença shared a route. All of this was provided by the Consell de Mallorca." Nowadays, however, students have to navigate a real obstacle course: "From Pollença, the bus arrives at approximately 7:30 a.m., but classes start at 8:00 a.m. A simple delay and they're already late." From Santa Margalida, they have to leave at six in the morning for Inca to catch the train to Sa Pobla. From Can Picafort and Muro, they depend on equally precarious connections," she says.

The board of directors of Palma's Municipal Transport Company (EMT) gave the green light this Friday to a proposal to increase the price of a single ticket from two to three euros starting in 2026. However, the increase would only affect people who do not use any of the available transport cards – the Citizen Card, the TIB card, or the new card when boarding the bus. The City Council points out that Congress approved on Thursday the continuation of free public transport in the Balearic Islands through 2026, so users who identify themselves with one of the current cards will not have to pay the increase. In any case, the increase in the single ticket price still needs to be debated and voted on by the full City Council. The Palma Socialist Party (PSOE) has strongly criticized the proposal and demanded that the mayor, Jaime Martínez, withdraw what it calls a "high fare." The Socialist deputy spokesperson, Francesc Dalmau, criticized the PP and Vox parties, saying they "don't believe in public transport," and recalled the price increase applied to Bicipalma this summer. According to Dalmau, while the Spanish government "protects free public transport," the PP in Palma City Council "increases fares, making it so that only a few can benefit from the bus." The Socialists have also questioned the implementation of the new Single Card, which is supposed to integrate fares with the Intermodal Card. They claim it raises "more questions than answers": currently, it's not possible to recover the balance on the Citizen Card, which could be lost, and the top-up machines still don't accept the new card.

The measure, which will also apply to the Canary Islands, was championed by Senator Juanjo Ferrer, representing Ibiza and Formentera, and included in the text that the Senate is sending to the Senda (a political platform). The initiative received support from the People's Party (PP), the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), and Vicenç Vidal, a deputy from Sumar-MÁS, among others. Both the PP and the eco-sovereignists and United Left celebrated the approval, which they consider "beneficial for the citizens of the Islands." Vidal emphasized that the inclusion of the amendment was made possible thanks to "tenacious diplomacy aimed at shifting the PSOE's stance towards the interests of the Balearic Islands," a strategy pursued jointly with Ferrer. "This measure is fair and necessary: we are an island territory with limited public transport, high costs, and a heavy reliance on private vehicles. Guaranteeing free public transport means mobility for everyone, especially families and young people, and it is both strategic and environmentally friendly," stated the eco-sovereignist deputy. From the People's Party, the deputy spokesperson in Congress, José Vicente Marí Bosó, emphasized his party's role in the Senate: "Without the PP's vote today, the amendment could not have been brought to Congress. Thanks to the PP, free public transport has been ratified in 2026," adding that they paid for it. For his part, the head of Institutional Policy for United Left of the Balearic Islands, Óscar Rodríguez, described the decision as "a victory for the work of the senator from Ibiza and Formentera and the progressive forces." Rodríguez has insisted that one of her party's objectives is for free public transport "to become a permanent right for the citizens of the Balearic Islands" and has called on the regional government to "improve the funding for the transfer of land transport responsibilities to the island councils, which is currently underfunded, to guarantee the sustainability of the measure and improve the service."

This measure, the result of a technical analysis by the Operations department with the participation of train drivers and operations inspectors, responds to the need to update timetables that were designed in a different context and, according to SFM, no longer reflect the operational reality of the network. The adjustments are based on real data collected over the last six months and have taken into account various factors, such as the bridge replacement works on Calle del Greco, near the Verge de Lluc station (Palma), increased train occupancy, changes in speed and timing, single-track sections, and stations experiencing growing passenger demand.
