The Urban Planning Department of the Palma City Council has granted a permit this Tuesday to demolish the building located at number 27 on 31 de Diciembre street, a construction designed by the architect Gaspar Bennàssar, with the condition of preserving the facade. The action will allow for the construction of a new multi-family building with a total of 15 homes, as well as parking spaces and storage rooms.

This Tuesday, the Councilor for Urbanism, Óscar Fidalgo, explained that the Historic Center Commission has given the go-ahead to the new project that will preserve the facade and through which a multi-family building will be constructed with 15 homes, parking spaces, and storage rooms.

The Cathedral of Mallorca has presented the program for the Gaudí Year 2026, commemorating the centenary of the death of the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and highlighting the Cathedral as his principal and only work outside of Catalonia. Gaudí's work in Mallorca, between 1904 and 1915, transformed the interior of the temple with a renewal of sacred art in service of faith and liturgy, adapting the heart of the cathedral, the episcopal throne, and the presbytery altar. The project also includes the baldachin over the altar, the lighting renovation, the ceramic mural on the throne, the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, and the liturgical furnishings, all of which demonstrate Gaudí's unique influence on the Cathedral. The Gaudí Year 2026 has been declared an Event of Special Public Interest by the Spanish government and includes the participation of sixteen other buildings where the architect worked, in Catalonia, León, and Cantabria.

The studio TEd'A Arquitectes, founded by Irene Pérez Piferrer and Jaume Mayol Amengual from Montuiira, has received three European and national awards between November and December, further solidifying their position as one of the most prominent voices in contemporary architecture from Mallorca. The first of these accolades came on November 7th in Warsaw, where the studio received the BigMat Grand Prize in the local context category for the Ca na Birgit project in Calvià. The project was not only awarded best project nationally but also took home the top European prize, the highest honor of the competition. The jury particularly valued an architecture that works on a local scale, using locally sourced materials and solutions, as well as the involvement of local stakeholders. In this sense, the award also recognizes the work of the builder, and in this case, the recognition went to Joan Sastre Cerdà, 'Pollet', which the studio, both Pérez and Mayol, highlighted as a cause for special joy.

The 'Re[Vi]ure el Sindicat' project, developed by five young Mallorcan architects, has won the international competition to rehabilitate the historic Sindicat building in Felanitx. The jury of the Europan 18 competition announced the winning proposals for this year's edition on Monday, as reported by the Ministry of Housing, Territory and Mobility in a press release. For the rehabilitation of the Sindicat, a former cooperative winery, the Mallorcan architects Aina Perelló, Arnau Carbó, David Perelló, Francisca Gual, and Sergi Pérez were selected from among some thirty proposals.

The former Son Busquets barracks has become one of the protagonists of Open House Palma 2025The festival, which has opened some sixty buildings for its fifth edition, has generated particular interest in the site, which until decades ago was linked to the Artillery. The organizers explained that the site is undergoing a profound urban transformation, which will position it as one of Palma's most ambitious regeneration projects.

The urban landscape of each of us is made up of a large number of buildings that, in the collective imagination, are little more than a facade: we walk past them every day and often know almost nothing about them. Not who built them, what decisions were made, or what stories lie hidden within. For the fifth consecutive year, the Open House festival, which takes place between November 10 and 16 in Palma, invites us to fill in all these gaps. It does so with some sixty openings that include historic and modern buildings, as well as public and private spaces, allowing us to explore the city's past and present, and imagine its future, with the simple act of walking through the doors around us. Here are four of the buildings that are part of this year's edition.

The former Son Busquets barracks, currently undergoing renovation, will be one of the highlights of this fifth edition of the Open House Palma festival, which will hold its open house on the weekend of November 15th and 16th. However, the program will begin on Monday the 10th, with diverse activities designed to bring architecture "to those who are not architects," as the organizers describe it. Throughout the week, heritage, design, and urban planning enthusiasts can participate in talks, workshops, and tours of different neighborhoods in the city, such as Son Gotleu, Cala Major, and El Amanecer, among others, with the aim of including areas further from the historic center in discussions about growth and development.

ARCA announced this Monday the suspension of the complete demolition of the building on Calle del 31 de Diciembre designed by architect Gaspar Bennàsser, which they described as a "small triumph."

The son of foreign parents, Alex Atanasov (Sineu, 2000) grew up and was raised in the Pla (Pla) region. "My whole life is rooted in Sineu." We're talking about architects and studios such as Herzog & de Meuron, Norman Foster, MVRDV, Sergison Bates, and Rem Koolhaas, among many others. "I don't know how to explain it, because I say it humbly and it may not sound familiar, but the reality is that we're a small factory in Campos that has the best architects in the world at its disposal," Huguet summarizes.

In addition to the biennial festival with which Huguet presents its latest projects in Campos—an event that will take place this year this Saturday, August 9th—if midsummer is synonymous with architecture in Mallorca, it's thanks to the Pollença Architecture and Design Week. This well-established event reaches its twelfth edition this year, becoming a benchmark gathering that transcends the archipelago and sparks interest among both industry professionals and the general public.

The Felanitx Trade Union has received 26 architectural proposals to give it a new lease of life as a cultural and social space. The Consell de Mallorca (Mallorca Council) has announced that the historic building owned by the island institution has received a total of 26 architectural proposals within the framework of the European competition Europan 18, after being selected as the only site in the Balearic Islands in this edition.
