The Balearic Islands are experiencing one of the most difficult moments in their recent history. It has never been so complicated to access housing. Never have so many young people seen the possibility of emancipating themselves so far away. Never have so many families had to dedicate such a large part of their salary to paying rent or a mortgage. And never have so many people felt that, despite working every day, living with dignity in their own land is becoming a privilege reserved for a few.

On the one hand, the testimony of two survivors suggests that at least 17 people died after spending 15 days adrift trying to reach the Archipelago. On the other hand, Maritime Rescue and the Civil Guard have recovered the bodies of two more migrants after the shipwreck of a makeshift boat southeast of Cabrera, where they also rescued 19 survivors. In this second case, the search operation remains active because several people could still be missing.

A strange feeling in a sun and beach destination. The same anticyclone that encourages the arrival of tourists and recreational boats fuels the arrival of dinghies. And more and more are arriving. The figures confirm it: in the last weekend of May alone, 15 boats with 236 people on board arrived at the southern Pitiusa island, 17 of whom were minors. Data from the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands confirms the trend: by May 31, 63 dinghies with 1,056 people had arrived in Formentera, 49% more than in 2025. Another 156 people arrived in Ibiza. There is no one left who disputes the facts: the route between Algeria and the Balearic Islands – and especially Formentera – is a massive and consolidated migratory route. Less than a year ago, the Spanish government was not so clear about it.

If a society is aware of what demographic changes cause, this is island society. It has been said many times and it is very true: Mallorca, for example, has been a kind of social laboratory where many of the economic ideas that have ended up shaping many parts of the West could be experimented with. A small, closed society, immensely devoted to a survival or agrarian economy, suddenly entered into a cycle of expansion, construction, demographic change, massive arrival of immigration, tourists, etc., which undid old ties, hierarchies, and cultures. Literature has made enough echo of this problem, while politics was responsible for either denying that anything too serious was happening, or for trying to steer it for the greatest benefit, in theory, of everyone, but in practice, of the political and economic elites.A society that is not capable of guaranteeing its basic survival structures is doomed to suicide, or to a perpetual identity crisis, which is beginning to be noticed as a continuity crisis, and also obviously, as an economic crisis. It is now in the rest of the Spanish state that a brutal population growth is being experienced, especially in this last decade. The economic model needs a lot of labor, and an aging population, dependent on care and with a very low birth rate among us, have finished fixing the pie.The 2008 real estate crisis slowed expansion, but from 2015 it began to grow again, now with more Europeans, Ukrainian refugees (more than 300,000), digital workers, etc. At no point has there been an explicit manifestation of the political desire to increase the population, however; citizens have seen the wave arrive without having been consulted, or without it having been clearly politically planned. However, the reforms of the immigration laws in 2022, and the facilities required at the same time by the EU, which is aware that Europe is aging and that the economy needs new blood, have now led to a point where one gets the impression that collapse is imminent, and not just in communities with non-Spanish languages, but everywhere. Such a wave required planning, as well as the capacity to integrate people and make them speak the language of the host country. From Spain, they know that people end up speaking Spanish out of obligation, what choice do they have, while Catalan speakers bow their heads and give up their language, which in the long run only increases the number of Spanish speakers by millions. It is one way among others of putting an end to non-Spanish languages, diluting them, and denying that demographics is a tool to achieve this objective, more than recurrent in the history of Spanish nationalism, it is a way of playing into its hands or whitewashing it. Spanish nationalism itself throws its hands up in the air when it finds that Spanish is no longer heard in certain neighborhoods or areas of the big capitals, a scandal that when it came from Catalan speakers was always mocked and stigmatized. Now it will be seen more than ever in favor of which language – not of which languages – the Spanish state is. Money has always spoken the language of those who handle it.

He hadn't slept because he had spent the night writing down exactly what he wanted to explain about his story. He needed to have the puzzle pieces in order. He notified the minors' center that he was turning 18. No one heeded his warning, and when the Police certified his birth certificate, they threw him out on the street. The system rejected him, and he lost any opportunity to access the public resources network. His case is not unique. According to his account, and as third-sector workers have confirmed, a friend of his ended up begging, overcome by tears and fear, at the door of a charitable organization to let him sleep under a roof. Since April 16, long queues at town halls have become the image of the extraordinary regularization driven by the Spanish government. They have been preparing documentation for months, but until the last minute they did not know that they would also need a vulnerability certificate, and that explains, in part, the system's saturation. "I don't understand why they want it, if all of us who are undocumented are vulnerable," reflects Abdou, a 32-year-old Senegalese man. Despite this, the priority is clear. The debate, legitimate in a democracy, is today a war of attrition that runs the risk of dehumanizing a reality that affects thousands of people. In the Islands, it is estimated that more than 30,000 people could benefit from this process. We must attend to them for reasons of humanity and public health." This is how Prohens spoke in the Parliament plenary on Tuesday about what the attention to migrants means for the services of the Islands, who, despite residing in the Balearic Islands, have not yet regularized their administrative situation. The president had to respond to a question from Vox about the healthcare spending for the attention of people in an irregular situation, a pointless request, as Prohens herself made clear: "IB-Salut only has one budget and one accounting, and no items are distinguished based on where they come from." "A public representative should know this," she reproached the spokesperson for the far-right, Manuela Cañadas, who this Wednesday has accused the Government of opacity for not making non-existent data public. "Mrs. Prohens has decided that the money of all citizens is a state secret," criticized Cañadas.

The proposal aims to address the structural demographic pressure affecting the Balearic Islands, a reality directly reflected in the overcrowding of schools and institutes. The central initiative of the motion is the creation of 35 temporary or reception classrooms distributed throughout the island, staffed by specialized personnel. Unlike the current model, the coalition proposes that these spaces be located outside of schools and have their own interdisciplinary program. This design seeks to manage the arrival of newly arrived students in an orderly manner and prevent the responsibility for their integration from falling exclusively on an already overwhelmed regular teaching staff. During the presentation, Joan Serra emphasized the need to adapt the system to the demographic reality of the archipelago. "We are the territory with the highest population growth in all of Europe, and the system cannot continue to function with stopgap measures," he said. Therefore, the party is presenting a proposal to ensure that "the arrival of newly arrived students is orderly and effective" through temporary reception classrooms. They say they want these classrooms to be "integrative tools, never segregative, that give students the necessary skills to successfully integrate into the mainstream system." For his part, Councilor Antoni Salas emphasized the importance of political consensus to pass this measure, which he considers "vital for maintaining educational quality and social cohesion" in Mallorca. Salas made a direct appeal to the other political parties: "We ask the other political groups in the Council of Mallorca to support this motion." The proposal anticipates that this new model will be implemented starting in the 2026-2027 academic year, with a special budget allocation and technical monitoring to evaluate its results within six months.

According to sources at the Balearic Islands Health Service (Ib-Salut), the infants are in the Pediatric ward and are recovering well. The girls were traveling on a boat with 32 sub-Saharan migrants that was intercepted on Saturday in Ibiza. This is one of the three boats whose disappearance was reported last week, as confirmed by the NGO Caminando Fronteras. Initially, it was reported that there were 30 occupants, but it has now been confirmed that the two children were also on board. The boat had departed from the coast of Algeria on January 22 and was carrying three women and two children, among other passengers. Following their rescue by Maritime Rescue, the migrants were able to contact their families in their countries of origin, who had previously alerted the humanitarian organization to their disappearance. The Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands had reported on Friday that the Algerian Navy had intercepted two of the boats reported missing, although without providing details that would allow for their identification. That same day, the Civil Guard and Maritime Rescue rescued another vessel with 22 people on board in southern Mallorca, which was confirmed as one of the missing boats. With the location of the boat intercepted on Saturday in Ibiza, at least one of the vessels initially reported as located by the Algerian authorities does not correspond to those that had been reported missing, according to Caminando Fronteras. Meanwhile, the two children remain hospitalized and under medical observation.

To be charitable, we won't speculate on percentages. Marga Prohens's People's Party (PP) has concluded that overcrowding will never be their kryptonite, their Achilles' heel, and has abandoned any significant measures to combat the saturation. The protests came quickly, the noise hasn't subsided, and the tourist season will begin as usual. In the end, the Consell de Mallorca (Mallorca Council) also doesn't seem likely to limit car access and will continue monitoring illegal tourist rentals with ridiculously limited resources. Without any major consequences. Except for negative ones for those who end up living on the streets while speculators enrich themselves illegally.
