This text enjoyed broad consensus at the time, including the support of the People's Party (PP) on many points, as had previously occurred with the Law on Mass Graves. It's hard to accept that laws that come late, but which nevertheless seek to provide truth, justice, and reparations, as the memory movement has always demanded, can be overturned so easily. I also find it difficult to accept these changes in position by parties that aspire to govern for a social majority, in less than a decade.

The eco-sovereignist party considers this decision "a democratic setback" and an attack on the dignity of the victims of Francoist repression. In light of this, the party emphasized the role of the municipal ordinance approved in Inca, promoted by the party itself, as a key tool for continuing to defend democratic values. The legislation establishes the framework for the City Council to recognize and provide reparations to the victims of Francoism, remove symbols of the dictatorship, preserve memorial sites, and promote educational and historical outreach activities. The ordinance also enabled the creation of the Municipal Council for Democratic Memory, a pioneering body in the Balearic Islands with the participation of memorial and social organizations.

This initiative follows the approval of the Municipal Ordinance on Democratic Memory, which establishes the regulatory framework for promoting public policies of truth, justice, reparation, and guarantees of non-repetition. The inaugural meeting took place on February 24, a date laden with symbolism, coinciding with the anniversary of the execution of former Inca mayor Antoni Mateu Ferrer. The commemoration included historical context provided by the city's official chronicler, Miquel Pieras, who read Mateu Ferrer's farewell letter written before his execution, a particularly moving moment that served to highlight the human dimension of the repression and the need to preserve collective memory.

The Association must pay this amount soon but lacks the necessary funds. Therefore, it is appealing for help and has launched a fundraising campaign to solicit voluntary contributions and raise the money it owes. The organization expressed in a statement its "profound disagreement with the judicial protection of a fascist monument inaugurated by the dictator Franco, which continues to occupy a public and democratic space." The Prime Minister, Marga ProhensThis was proclaimed on Tuesday in the plenary session of the Balearic Parliament, with the approval of the right-wing and far-right parties. There is no room for migrants—especially if they are Muslim—nor for democratic memory, but there is plenty of space for the more than 19 million tourists—an Olympic record for 2025—hundreds of thousands of cars, and vacation rental properties. There is so much space that the Council of Mallorca declared on Thursday that it is no longer necessary to reduce the cap on tourist accommodation on the island, while the Balearic Government proclaims the miracle of containment and deseasonalization without having implemented a single measure. Are more tourists arriving than ever before? We should be happy, because the summer season isn't spiraling out of control and business is booming in the months that weren't previously full of visitors. It's well known that an empty month is not economically productive. Since there's room for so many visitors, we won't raise the ecotax either, because we mustn't upset the hotel owners. And yet Prohens has announced it a couple of times. In its defense, it can be said that the cart of announcements is full of initiatives, from this and other legislatures, whose trace can only be found in the newspaper archives.

Democratic memory in Spain is like a game: selectively remembering what suits us and conveniently forgetting the rest. For years, we've heard that the Transition was a period of harmony, peace, and collective embraces, in which King Juan Carlos brought us freedoms. A kind of fairy tale where we all suddenly decided to forget our differences and walk together toward democracy, as if nothing had happened.

The initiative by Vicenç Vidal, the Mallorcan deputy from Sumar, to request that the fascist monolith of La Feixina be included in the state catalog of Francoist symbols is undoubtedly laudable and necessary. As is the determination of Pedro Sánchez's government to stand firm on democratic memory and against any praise of the dictatorship. The problem is that all this comes to Feixina when it's already too late. With Feixina, there's nothing to be done. There's nothing to be done now, nor tomorrow, and I don't think there will be for many years to come.

Memoria de Mallorca, which monitors the incidents, has already reported the three most recent attacks to the Prosecutor's Office for Democratic Memory and Human Rights: one in 2023, another in October, and this Monday's attack, the second in less than a month. Its spokesperson, Maria Antònia Oliver, points to a "fascist resurgence" that has targeted the Mallorcan trade unionist. Miquel Rosselló, representative of the Platform for Democratic Memory, partially blames the Speaker of the Balearic Parliament, Gabriel Le Senne (Vox), who is under investigation for a possible hate crime for having torn down her portrait during a plenary debate. "He is the second highest authority in the Balearic Islands, he emboldens his supporters and incites hatred," he laments.

Several people attended the commemoration in Plaça de Cort, where a manifesto was read to remember the more than 3,000 victims in the Balearic Islands and reaffirm the commitment to "truth, dignity, and the defense of democratic memory." The president of Memoria de Mallorca, Maria Antònia Oliver, publicly denounced the fact that the Balearic Government has not commemorated this date for three consecutive years, as established by the still-valid Democratic Memory Law. She therefore called on the Balearic Executive to "reconsider" the foreseeable repeal of the Democratic Memory Law. "They accuse us of being sectarian, but we defend the rights and reparations for all victims, without making any kind of distinction," he emphasized.

When the Law of Democratic Memory and Recognition was passed in 2018, we said it was a law that, in and of itself, justified an entire legislative term, because it gave voice to silence and dignity to the names erased from history. Today, as the far-right conglomerate has decided to begin its repeal, strangely, I feel no sadness for the victims, nor for their children or descendants. Their memory is already written in the invisible, on the walls that heard their footsteps. The seed has been planted and has germinated. I feel sorry for my country, which, under the siege of political violence and hatred, has forgotten that democracy is also a form of tenderness.

"The Popular Party always fulfills its agreements." Pacta sunt servanda, the old folks used to say. This is the argument President Prohens uses to justify her party's once again saying yes to Vox's demand to repeal the Democratic Memory Law approved by the Progreso government, during which a significant and necessary push was given to historical memory policies. "It's just that, or are we now going to restrict Vox from presenting its proposals?" Prohens adds, with Ayuso-like cynicism.
