The Inca City Council will hold this Wednesday, August 26, an institutional event to recognize and repair the memory of Antoni Bestard Seguí, one of the most prominent figures of Inca anarchism and a victim of Francoist repression. The event will take place at 7 p.m. at Carrer de Sant Antoni, 23.

The PSIB has requested this Wednesday that the Government open a columbarium in the Palma cemetery to house nearly 200 unidentified victims of Francoist repression, as well as other figures such as the siblings Aurora and Gabriel Picornell. The socialist spokesperson in Cort, Xisco Dalmau, has asked that the inauguration be accompanied by a recognition ceremony with the participation of memorialist entities. He also argued that this space should become a living center for study and research, open to both students and the general public.

The Maó monolith, erected in 1939 and located in the Plaça de l'Esplanada, has been included in the Catalogue of symbols and elements contrary to democratic memory. This was announced by the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres. The Technical Commission of Experts has also decided to include in the catalogue the pyramid of the Italians (Burgos) and the lintel of Baños de Ebro (Aàlaba).

A few days ago, the parliamentary majority decided to repeal the Democratic Memory Law, which I had the honor of drafting in my final days as a member of parliament. This text enjoyed broad consensus at the time, including the support of the People's Party (PP) on many points, as had previously occurred with the Law on Mass Graves. It's hard to accept that laws that come late, but which nevertheless seek to provide truth, justice, and reparations, as the memory movement has always demanded, can be overturned so easily. I also find it difficult to accept these changes in position by parties that aspire to govern for a social majority, in less than a decade.

MÁS por Inca defended the validity of the municipality's democratic memory ordinance this Friday after the Balearic Islands Parliament approved the repeal of the regional law on memory with votes from the People's Party and Vox. The eco-sovereignist party considers this decision "a democratic setback" and an attack on the dignity of the victims of Francoist repression. In light of this, the party emphasized the role of the municipal ordinance approved in Inca, promoted by the party itself, as a key tool for continuing to defend democratic values. The Inca City Council established the Municipal Council for Democratic Memory this Tuesday, the first body of its kind created in the Balearic Islands. The Memory of Mallorca Association has been working for years to demolish the Francoist monument of Feixina that honors those "fallen" on the cruiser BalearicsThe organization has exhausted all legal avenues in its fight, and in October 2022, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of protecting the monolith and ordered the organization to pay €3,223.71 to cover legal costs. The Association must pay this amount soon but lacks the necessary funds. The Department of Education – through the Continuing Teacher Training Service and in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior and the Memorial Center for Victims of Terrorism – has offered teachers in the Balearic Islands an activity entitled When educating means protecting. Teacher training workshops: Memory and terrorism preventionwhich will take place on March 13 and 14. The announcement comes amidst the controversy surrounding the repeal of the Democratic Memory Law, promoted by the PP and Vox parties. This government action disconnects the concept of 'memory' from Francoist repression and the recognition of the victims of fascism.

The ARA Baleares (Balearic Islands Association of Aragon) is organizing a round table discussion this Wednesday, January 28th, to reflect on democratic memory, discrimination, and the system of freedoms, in a context marked by the repeal of the Democratic Memory Law in the Balearic Islands and the resurgence of the far right.
