The prosecution is seeking a 15-year prison sentence for a man accused of raping a woman with a severe intellectual disability in an abandoned building in Manacor in 2021. According to the indictment, the victim—who was pregnant with the defendant's child at the time, following a previous relationship—was tricked into accompanying him to the location. The trial will take place next Tuesday in the Second Section of the Balearic Islands Provincial Court. The prosecution has charged the defendant with sexual assault with the aggravating circumstance of gender-based violence and is requesting, in addition to the prison sentence, ten years of supervised release, a restraining order prohibiting him from approaching or communicating with the victim for 20 years, and €15,000 in compensation. According to the prosecution's account, on July 3, 2021, at 9:00 p.m., the woman met the defendant at a bar in Manacor. He allegedly asked her to accompany him "to a place" under the pretext of giving her an object, and thus led her to a small, abandoned building. Once there, the man allegedly began kissing and caressing her. When the woman refused to have sex, the prosecution maintains that he immobilized her and threw her onto an abandoned mattress to rape her. The document also includes insults that the defendant allegedly directed at her, such as "fucking Spanish woman" or "fucking fat woman," and expressions with which he compared her to a prostitute. The prosecution specifies that the victim had "a borderline intellectual disability that reduced her capacity for decision-making and defense," a factor that aggravated her vulnerability to the assault. After the events, the woman allegedly developed post-traumatic symptoms, including anxiety, recurring nightmares, and a rejection of her own body.

This Tuesday's Council of Ministers approved the reform of the Dependency Law and the General Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The regulatory changes, piloted by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption, and the 2030 Agenda, under the leadership of Pablo Bustinduy, were approved in the second round, and are now headed to the Congress of Deputies. Among the notable measures is the elimination of the incompatibility between dependency benefits and services.
