One morning in 1965, some French businessmen took 600 kilos of sand from the beach of Portocristo to recreate an artificial beach on the French Riviera. That operation, called Operation Plages Internationals, turned a piece of the Mallorcan coast into a curious tourist postcard a thousand kilometers away.

Unfortunately, this is not a phenomenon exclusive to Portocristo, and many coves in our area are already suffering the effects of coastal regression to a greater or lesser extent. As with the vast majority of phenomena, this situation is not due to a single cause; multiple factors influence, interact, and magnify it.

The GOB has presented the Manifesto for a habitable, safe and protected coastline, with the aim of addressing the pressure on the Balearic Islands' coves and beaches during the summer. The document calls for more responsible coastal management and requests the involvement of public authorities in preserving these natural spaces.

The traditional beach bar, an undisputed symbol of summer and the beaches of the Balearic Islands, has come a long way from its humble origins to become a global phenomenon geared toward tourism, where luxury and exclusivity have won out over functionality and local, proximity commerce. Its history, which began in 19th-century Cuba as a makeshift kiosk where sugarcane plantation workers drank coffee, is today a clear example of how tourism has transformed traditional elements to extract greater economic returns.
