The single school zone, which will be implemented in most municipalities in the Balearic Islands, The Ministry of Education will apply the single zone starting in the 2026-2027 academic year to all municipalities in Mallorca, except Selva, Calvià, Santa Margalida, and Andratx; to those in Menorca (Maó will maintain a separate zone for Sant Climent) and to Formentera. The towns of Ibiza will maintain diverse areas, at least this academic year.

The Manacor City Council plenary session on Monday approved a motion from the municipal groups MÉS-Esquerra, PSIB-PSOE, and AIPC-SyS to reject the implementation of a single school enrollment zone in the municipality. The measure had recently been approved by the Regional Ministry of Education and Universities for the 2026-2027 school year admissions process. The motion was presented by the Education Delegate, Ferran Montero. The City Council argues that the current model, based on four educational zones, ensures that children can attend schools close to their homes and contributes to a balanced distribution of students. According to the Council, implementing a single zone could lead to increased travel and difficulties in balancing work and family life, as well as changes in the distribution of students among schools.

The Ministry of Education and Universities will implement a single school zone system in almost all municipalities of Mallorca and Menorca as part of the enrollment process for the 2026-2027 academic year. The Minister of Education, Antoni Vera, presented the new admissions regulations and detailed the changes to school assignment, admissions, and enrollment, as well as the new features for each educational stage. Vera emphasized that online applications will remain the preferred method for requesting places and completing enrollment, as they offer a faster, more efficient, and more reliable process, although in-person assistance will still be available for families who require it. The new regulations introduce specific measures for the first cycle of Early Childhood Education (ages 0-3). Among these, the admission of unborn children is now permitted. In this case, a medical certificate indicating an upcoming delivery date will be required. The regulations also address the management of withdrawals and waiting lists and incorporate greater flexibility in classroom organization, allowing schools to better adapt to the needs of families and children.

The Ministry of Education and Universities has submitted to the Education Sectoral Board the draft order regulating the process of assignment, admission, and enrollment of students in educational centers supported wholly or partially with public funds.

The case of Ferreries, where 11 families who refused to attend the public school have been given places at the religious charter school, is not the only one in the enrollment process for the next academic year. In Santa Maria del Camí, four families with 3-year-old children have been excluded from the CEIP Melcior Rosselló y Simonet. They have been granted places at the Ramon Llull school, a Christian charter school run by the Sisters of Charity. "We want to send our son to the town's public, secular school. Furthermore, we are a family made up of two women, which, unfortunately, makes us feel even more vulnerable in this context," explains Marta (not her real name), the mother of one of the families affected by the lack of public school places.
