The classrooms of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) are emptying earlier and earlier. After Easter, coinciding with the start of the tourist season, absenteeism is particularly accentuated in higher courses, where many students combine studies and work. “Between 30 and 40% of students may stop coming to class because they are working,” assures professor David Abril, who considers this trend “structural” and closely linked to the reality of the labor market and the need to pay for studies autonomously. However, the increasing absenteeism of students throughout the entire course is a topic that occupies the university community.

The Ministry of Labor, Public Service and Social Dialogue has indicated this Thursday that the case against the PP spokesperson in the Consell de Mallorca, Núria Riera, for alleged irregularities in the fulfillment of the terms of her employment compatibility was resolved on August 26 with a warning for a minor offense.

This Wednesday, the CCOO (Working Workers' Commissions) launched a campaign in the Balearic Islands against "the inappropriate use" of the term "absenteeism" by employers, who—according to the union—use it "deliberately" with the aim of "demonizing rights" such as sick leave, reduced hours for childcare, strike hours, and vacation time. According to the union, these cases "are not unjustified absences—or absenteeism—but rather rights protected by the system."
