The Minister of Tourism, Jaume Bauzá, defended on Tuesday a "moderate" increase in the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS, known as the ecotax), similar to the one proposed by the Government last March: Raise it between 1.5 and 3 euros in high season and lower it in winterAt that time, he was unable to push the initiative through due to a lack of support from Vox, which opposes tax increases. "It wouldn't affect competitiveness at all," the regional minister insisted. Bauzá made these remarks in response to a question from Vox's deputy spokesperson, Sergio Rodríguez, about whether the regional government had studied the impact of this tax increase. Bauzá admitted that it hadn't, but insisted that "no extensive studies are needed" to know that this increase would be harmless. Rodríguez, for his part, responded that the government's sole objective with this proposal was to raise more revenue, not to discourage lower-income tourists, as Bauzá argued. In this regard, he urged the regional government to "stop bleeding" tourists and residents dry with taxes and instead focus on offerings that attract "higher-quality" tourists. The CCOO union presented this Thursday a package of 52 measures that it will present in the second phase of the Pact for Sustainability, among which stands out the proposal to raise the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) to 15 euros per person per day in the months of July and August with the aim of making it a "disincentive".

Cross-referencing data between the Government and the island councils has identified 1,475 establishments with tourist licenses that were not listed in the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) registry, and to which requests have been sent, according to a statement from the Ministry of Economy.

The Government will allocate €15 million from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) to local councils to take over obsolete hotels with the aim of "reducing tourist accommodation, improving the environmental quality of destinations, and also moving toward a more sustainable and balanced tourism model," the Regional Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sports announced this Thursday. The vacant spaces will be used to "develop green areas, public housing, educational facilities, health centers, or renaturalization projects that help mitigate the effects of climate change." However, he noted that "many of these establishments, which are now obsolete, lost their accommodations a long time ago." The Executive expects the calls for proposals to be published between October and November 2025. Once resolved, local authorities will have a maximum period of 18 months to execute the projects and an additional three months to justify them. "six or seven" projects for the acquisition and demolition of tourist establishments were left out of last year's call for proposals, which was funded with €16 million from the European Union. The last one is the only one that has already been taken over, while the rest must be demolished before the end of 2025.
