The Mallorcan hotel chain Melià Hotels International has decided to immediately end the management, commercialization, and brand licensing services for 15 hotels in Cuba. The decision comes in a context marked by pressure from the United States on foreign companies operating on the island and after the Donald Trump administration set June 5 as the deadline to take measures against companies linked to business with the Cuban military conglomerate Gaeasa.

Hoteliers point to illegal tourist rentals as one of the main culprits of overcrowding in the Balearic Islands. The vacant spaces will be used to "develop green areas, public housing, educational facilities, health centers, or renaturalization projects that help mitigate the effects of climate change." The Executive expects the calls for proposals to be published between October and November 2025. Once resolved, local authorities will have a maximum period of 18 months to execute the projects and an additional three months to justify them.
