https://en.arabalears.cat/opinion/restoration-of-nature-shall-we-start_129_5713552.html

It has been almost two years since the European Union approved the Nature Restoration Regulation after months of blocking by some countries opposed to this new legislation. Finally, on June 17, 2024, it was definitively approved at the last minute. Hungary changed its vote at the last moment and it was only achieved thanks to the positive vote of the Austrian minister, who even voted against the official position of her own government. This step has been decisive in making a leap forward in the environmental policies of the EU member states. Faced with a situation where nature conservation policies are no longer sufficient to stop the environmental degradation of our ecosystems, this regulation aims to restore at least 20% of the EU's terrestrial and marine areas by 2030 and all ecosystems that need it by 2050. And it does so with a stronger regulatory framework than European directives, such as those on water, habitats, and birds. This means that the regulation not only sets objectives like the directives, but all countries must obligatorily apply its entire content.

Fresh, crystalline water, all shades of green, and fruit trees of every kind. It was, and is, right next to the Estella canal and the Company road. They called it Ca na Beatriu. The young couple spent their summers there, too hot in the city and in sa Pobla. In the summer house, one could hear the waves of the sea, of that immense, blue bay. The first tree they planted there was a cherry tree, as a symbol of purity –for its white blossom– and of love and fertility –for its intense red fruit. They had recently married in London, after meeting at the theatre owned by Mr. Aubyn, at 15 Bedford Row. In the fertile, black lands of l'Albufera, a cherry tree suggested the longed-for paradise or the desired reward. At Ca na Beatriu, the lady –as the Company laborers called her– commanded the ancient rhythm of the sleeping water.

The legislation being prepared by the People's Party (PP), which already has the support of Vox, will allow the legalization of irregular constructions in this emblematic area. The proposed law, which will reach Parliament in the next session, includes a series of articles that will regulate the procedures for illegal dwellings to benefit from a kind of amnesty, since they were unable to take advantage of the one already approved by the PP and Vox in the Chamber.

There was a time when we scratched our arms with a firecracker to carve an initial, so that when the toasted scab fell off, the memory of falling in love would remain; when we rejoiced in getting a little burned at Patum or the correfoc (fire run) during the festivities, a sign that we had played with fire; a time when the anecdote of a lost tooth or the stigma of a vaccine or illness gave character to the body and color to speech; when we wore lucky t-shirts and bracelets, frayed to be woven with history; and even at home, there was a time when stains, cracks, and junk represented experience, meaning. Today, what we have are advertisements that assure us that "life doesn't need to leave a mark": that we can and should try to avoid the traceable memory, the meaning, of our actions.
