The Balearic Cultural Work of Inca celebrates on Saturday, May 23rd, at 7 PM, in the Cloister of Santo Domingo of Inca, the XXVII edition of the May Awards, an event that annually recognizes the work of individuals, entities, and groups committed to the language and culture of the Balearic Islands. With these awards, the OCB of Inca wishes to highlight the work of people and initiatives that, from different fields, contribute to cultural dynamism, the defense of heritage, linguistic normalization, and the preservation of the identity of Inca.

Muralists Albert Pinya, Carolina Adam, Edoardo Ettorre, Kamma Marlo, and Núria Toll are among the artists who will participate in Inca Street Art, the urban art, music, and culture festival that takes place in the town starting Friday, when the III Balearic Grafit Meeting also begins.

MÁS por Inca defended the validity of the municipality's democratic memory ordinance this Friday after the Balearic Islands Parliament approved the repeal of the regional law on memory with votes from the People's Party and Vox. The eco-sovereignist party considers this decision "a democratic setback" and an attack on the dignity of the victims of Francoist repression. In light of this, the party emphasized the role of the municipal ordinance approved in Inca, promoted by the party itself, as a key tool for continuing to defend democratic values. The legislation establishes the framework for the City Council to recognize and provide reparations to the victims of Francoism, remove symbols of the dictatorship, preserve memorial sites, and promote educational and historical outreach activities. The ordinance also enabled the creation of the Municipal Council for Democratic Memory, a pioneering body in the Balearic Islands with the participation of memorial and social organizations.

The Inca City Council has begun renovation work on the drinking water reservoir at the Les Monges pass. This project aims to ensure the proper functioning of this strategic infrastructure for the municipality's water supply. The contract has been awarded to Obras Comas Beltran SL for €259,906.21 (VAT included). The total construction period will be five months, although the repair and waterproofing work inside the reservoir will be completed within a maximum of one month to guarantee the municipality's water supply at all times.

The Inca City Council established the Municipal Council for Democratic Memory this Tuesday, the first body of its kind created in the Balearic Islands. This initiative follows the approval of the Municipal Ordinance on Democratic Memory, which establishes the regulatory framework for promoting public policies of truth, justice, reparation, and guarantees of non-repetition. The inaugural meeting took place on February 24, a date laden with symbolism, coinciding with the anniversary of the execution of former Inca mayor Antoni Mateu Ferrer. The commemoration included historical context provided by the city's official chronicler, Miquel Pieras, who read Mateu Ferrer's farewell letter written before his execution, a particularly moving moment that served to highlight the human dimension of the repression and the need to preserve collective memory.

The Inca Regional Hospital hosted another session of its citizen participation committee, a meeting that serves to share data, projects, and concerns with institutional representatives and patient associations from the region. The meeting was attended by members of the hospital's management team, led by the manager, Xisco Ferrer, as well as the Primary Care Manager for Mallorca, Carlos Raduán, and the Healthcare Director of the Balearic Islands Health Service, Raúl Lara. Management praised the work of the approximately 1,250 professionals on staff and highlighted some recently implemented improvements, such as the introduction of free television and telephone service in all rooms, the milestone of performing the first endoscopic lumbar spine surgeries, and technological upgrades in various areas. The hospital serves a population of 146,575 and has 181 inpatient beds, 81 consulting rooms and offices, six operating theaters, and eight beds for critical care patients. The annual meeting of the citizen participation committee thus consolidates a space for direct communication between the healthcare center and the area it serves.

A cyclist died this Saturday after being hit by a vehicle on the old Inca road, as it passes through the municipality of Santa Maria del Camí. The incident occurred at kilometer 15.6 around 11:00 AM, as confirmed to Europa Press by the Directorate General of Traffic. Civil Guard officers, the Santa María del Camino Local Police, and paramedics were dispatched to the scene. They attended to the victim, but were ultimately unable to save his life.

The jury trial of the man accused of killing one of the assailants who broke into his home to steal marijuana plants began this Monday at the Provincial Court of Palma. The prosecutor asserted in the first session that "there is more than enough evidence for a conviction" and maintained that there is no dispute that the accused caused the victim's death. The hearing began after 1 p.m., following the selection of the jury, which will determine the guilt or innocence of both the homeowner, accused of homicide, and the other three men, charged with attempted robbery. The prosecution is requesting a 15-year prison sentence for the homeowner and 11 months for each of the three assailants. It is also seeking approximately €157,000 in compensation for the victim's family. During the preliminary hearing and the reading of the initial reports, the prosecutor emphasized that "the fact that the accused killed a person is not in dispute" and that the evidence presented supports a conviction. The defense attorneys for the mother, sister, and father of the deceased young man went further, arguing that the events constitute not manslaughter, but murder, based on two aggravating circumstances: surprise and cruelty. They argued that the victim was attacked from behind and received "a large number of stab wounds" until he bled to death. "It wasn't a three-on-one situation, but rather an unarmed person who was surprised and repeatedly stabbed," stated the lawyer for the young man's father.

The Islands turned blue in 2023.
