The Ibiza Council announced this Friday that the trial will cost 10 million euros and will involve the transfer of approximately 30,000 tons of waste, while the island's five municipalities have just finalized emergency plans to reduce manure generation. The stated objective is to extend the lifespan of the Ca na Putxa landfill in Santa Eulària, which was nearing capacity and had become a central point of contention in the waste management debate in the Pitiusas Islands. This pilot project comes after a complex and controversial political and legal process. The Balearic Islands Government had to approve a plan at the end of 2025. Decree law This decree provides legal cover for the transfer of manure between islands, after a previous decree, intended to include the transfer within the so-called Strategic Interest Programs, was rejected by Parliament. This decree also allocates €50 million from the Balearic Government to compensate the Consell de Mallorca for managing the waste it receives and allows the Consell to reduce its waste collection fee by up to 10% by 2026, as explained by the island institution.

These dogs were rescued during an operation on February 24th at a property in Palma, where they were found in very poor condition. The operation was carried out by officers from the Seprona (Nature Protection Service of the Civil Guard), the Guardia Civil (Civil Guard), and technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture, who discovered numerous irregularities and a situation incompatible with animal welfare regulations, the Palma City Council reported. Between February 25th and 26th, municipal veterinary services transferred the animals to the Son Reus facilities, where all the dogs were assessed. They were treated for internal and external parasites, vaccinated, microchipped, cleaned, and underwent various diagnostic tests, including a rapid test for leishmaniasis and complete blood work in those cases exhibiting clinical symptoms. The animals requiring more intensive monitoring were admitted under veterinary supervision, while the rest were placed in the Son Reus center after a favorable clinical evolution was confirmed. Cort specified that the 50 dogs are currently in optimal condition and that, starting this Wednesday, they were made available to the public for responsible adoption, after having been exposed to a situation of "extreme vulnerability."

According to a report this Thursday by the Councilor for Social Services, Lourdes Roca, and reported by Europa Press, the first is for the creation of an administrative building to replace the current one, located on the same plot. This new building will adapt to the surroundings and the uneven terrain, improving its integration into the center as a whole, facilitating access and creating a more welcoming space. The existing building, measuring approximately 200 square meters, houses administrative functions that will be maintained in the new building, integrating work areas, meeting rooms, classrooms, storage rooms, and changing rooms. The budget is €1.3 million, and the expected completion time is ten months. The second approved project is for the construction of a new, independent auxiliary building in the Son Reus complex.

Approximately 70% of this waste is rejected, which is sent to the Ca na Putxa landfill in the municipality of Santa Eulàlia. He explained that the Ca na Putxa landfill is nearing the end of its useful life and, given the lack of foresight from the Ibiza Island Council, the "emergency solution" is now being considered: transferring the rejected waste to Mallorca for incineration in Son Reus.
