The suspects ran over two men in this Menorcan municipality. The magistrate is initially investigating them for the crimes of completed homicide, attempted homicide, and failure to render aid. The case remains under seal, and further investigative procedures are expected in the coming days. The events date back to last Thursday, when a vehicle intentionally ran over two men at the entrance to the residential complex. One of the injured, a 51-year-old man, suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and died the following day in the hospital after being admitted in critical condition. According to the police investigation, the hit-and-run may be related to a previous knife fight between several men that occurred the day before at a local hotel, an incident that also left others injured and has triggered an investigation to clarify the origin of the conflict.

The parties reached a plea agreement on Monday before the trial, which was scheduled to take place before a jury at the Provincial Court of the Balearic Islands. The first defendant was ultimately convicted of homicide, although the prosecution initially sought a 20-year sentence for murder. The man admitted to having an argument with the victim and punching him several times in the face, causing him to fall to the ground and lose consciousness. Under the agreement, the prosecution removed from its closing arguments the references that, after this initial assault, he continued to hit the victim in the head until he was in a coma. The victim died a few days later, on January 2, 2024. The man must also pay the deceased's family €280,000 in compensation. Regarding the second defendant, the initial request for a two-year prison sentence has been reduced to six months. This man also admitted to the charges against him and accepted the sentence. The mitigating circumstance of alcohol and drug use was taken into account in both cases. The events date back to the early hours of Christmas Day 2023 in Maó.

She could face a life sentence with the possibility of parole. The jury members, who deliberated since last Tuesday, unanimously determined that there was sufficient evidence to convict the suspect of murder and arson. The jurors found it proven that the accused left her home with her face covered to avoid being recognized at 1:05 a.m. on August 3rd and went to the home of the elderly couple, her partner's parents. Once there, knowing that the woman and man were asleep and that he was completely incapable of defending himself, she set fire to the sofa. When she was sure the flames were spreading, she went to the garage and took some pillows located next to the gas tank. After that, he returned home, arriving at 2:31 a.m. "He is guilty of intentionally causing the death of a person vulnerable due to their illness, using a method designed to ensure that death, which prevented any possibility of defense," the verdict stated.
