The First Section of the Provincial Court of the Balearic Islands sentenced a woman to six years in prison this Friday for attempting to murder her husband while he slept with their two-year-old daughter in Palma. The court issued a plea agreement after the parties reached a settlement before the trial. This reduced the prosecution's initial request for an 11-year sentence. In addition to the prison sentence—she has been incarcerated since the incident in October 2024—she has been stripped of her parental rights over their daughter for the duration of her sentence and must pay the victim €10,700 in compensation for the injuries and resulting trauma. The woman admitted that on the morning of October 19, 2024, at the family home in Palma, while her husband slept with their two-year-old daughter, she stabbed him several times in the chest with a large knife. Although the man woke up, his wife continued stabbing him in the chest, armpit, and right arm. At the same time, she put her fingers in his mouth and, when he began to scream in pain, she silenced him. At one point, the victim managed to wrest the knife from her and get the child to safety.

The mother of a doll who was allegedly sexually abused by her uncle claimed that the man threatened the girl to keep her from revealing what had happened. "If you go looking for a boy, I'll kill you. You're very pretty," she said he told her daughter when the abuse, which allegedly occurred between late 2021 and early 2022 at the doll's great-grandmother's home, came to light. The woman explained this on Monday during her testimony in the trial taking place in the First Section of the Provincial Court, just after the victim's statement, which was viewed behind closed doors, was reviewed. The victim was 11 years old at the time of the alleged abuse and is now 15. According to her account, the accused also warned the girl that "she couldn't say anything because he would go to jail and she would be taken to a center." The defendant testified at the end of the hearing and denied the accusations, also asserting that he was never alone with his niece, his cousin's daughter. When asked about the motivations for the complaint, he stated that he did not know the reasons and suggested that she harbored "grudge" against him due to family feuds. The man repeatedly insisted that before the events in question, she was like a sister to him. The minor confirmed the alleged abuse.

At another point in the hearing, a psychologist who worked at the doll's school testified that the girl explained what had happened to some friends, who then told the teachers. In a subsequent interview, the girl confirmed the alleged abuse. A sister of the accused testified that she never saw him mistreat the doll or any other family members. The professionals who attended to and treated the doll indicated that she felt "sad" and "bitter" and also displayed feelings of disgust. She also showed feelings of guilt for recounting the events. Two forensic experts confirmed the existence of psychological injuries. "Spontaneous and coherent"

The trial concluded this Monday and is now awaiting judgment. The prosecution is requesting a 13-year prison sentence for the man for sexual assault and psychological harm, arguing, among other things, that the victim's testimony is "clarifying" because it is "spontaneous and coherent." The defense is requesting acquittal, stating that the minor's testimony is "neither credible nor plausible." According to the lawyer, the victim's account is tainted by abuse suffered by her sister and "full of inconsistencies."

A jury has unanimously found a woman guilty of murder after she broke into the home of a vulnerable elderly man in 2023 in Les Països, Ibiza. The man was the father of her former partner and died of asphyxiation after the woman set fire to the house in the early hours of the morning with him inside. The jury members, who deliberated since last Tuesday, unanimously concluded that there was sufficient evidence to convict the suspect of murder and arson. The events date back to the early morning of August 3, 2023, when the house where an elderly couple was sleeping caught fire. The woman—a nonagenarian with Alzheimer's—and her caregiver were able to escape, but the man, who was completely incapacitated, died of asphyxiation in his bed. The prosecution is seeking a life sentence with the possibility of parole for the woman, the ex-partner of the victim's son, alleging a financial motive. The defense requested her acquittal, arguing that the accusation stems solely from the suspicions of one of the victim's daughters. The accused testified last and denied all the accusations against her. She did acknowledge, however, that she left her home at 1:05 a.m. that night, as shown by the security cameras, but categorically denied going to the victim's residence. Intoxication

According to the jury's findings, the victim was unable to leave her room or get out of bed. She suffered second-degree burns over most of her body and died from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by inhaling smoke from the fire. The nine members of the jury also unanimously found that the woman had keys to the burned house and was familiar with its layout and routines. The jury supported its verdict with evidence from security cameras that captured the woman's movements, which she partially denied, as well as with the conclusions of the police and fire department investigations. Regarding the woman's statement, they considered it contradictory concerning her use of a veil to cover her face, since she said she wore it out of fear of a former partner, although she was only seen wearing it in the footage that captured her leaving her home. The jury also noted contradictions between the route he admitted and claimed to have taken and what the security cameras in the area captured. Life imprisonment with the possibility of parole

The jury, on the other hand, considered, by six votes to three, that the defendant suffered at the time of the events from a disorder which, while affecting her understanding of the facts, did not completely negate it. With two votes in favor and seven against, the jury opposes a pardon, and by five votes in favor and four against, they oppose considering the possibility of suspending the sentence. The prosecutor and the private prosecution have maintained their request for life imprisonment with review, while the defense has already announced that it will file an appeal.
