The Government will study “legally viable” formulas to guarantee residents' access to certain public transport lines and frequencies where difficulties are currently registered due to user pressure. This was announced this Thursday by the President of the Executive, Marga Prohens, during the Conference of Presidents held in Formentera.

The new system is already operational on approximately half of the fleet, around 13 buses. Card payments also allow for automatic discounts of 40% for the first passenger and up to 60% for accompanying passengers, in groups of up to six people. With this addition, EMT aligns itself with the payment model already in place across the rest of the TIB system—train, metro, and intercity bus—and takes a step forward in facilitating the use of public transport for occasional users, visitors, or people who do not have any transport pass.

The Balearic Islands Transport (TIB) buses connecting the Calvià, Inca, Manacor, Sa Pobla, Alcúdia, Llucmajor, and Campos area with Son Sant Joan Airport will offer a regular service year-round, even during the off-season, as announced this Thursday by the Minister of Housing, Mobility, and Territory, José Luis Mat. This service will begin this Saturday on lines A11 (Camp de Mar-Airport), A33 (from the Port of Alcúdia), A43 (Manacor), and A51 (Campos). Buses will run every hour to every hour and 1 hour and 15 minutes, depending on the line. The first buses will depart between 4:15 and 4:40 a.m. for the airport, and the last buses will leave Son Sant Joan between 10:30 and 11:40 p.m. The four lines will have an average of between 26 and 38 daily trips. Mateo emphasized that this is the first time a regular service has been offered on the four Aerotib bus lines during the off-season and from Monday to Sunday. The objective of this initiative is to "respond to the demand of citizens" and guarantee connectivity between the main population centers of Mallorca and the airport. According to the manager of the Mallorca Transport Consortium (CTM), Luisa Serra, the Aerotib service had not been offered during the off-season in the last five years, and in the three years prior, from 2017 to 2019, it was offered with a maximum of eight trips per day. These changes have been made possible thanks to the modification of the concessions of the bus service. With the change in the three contracts, the service offering goes from 16.5 million kilometers (included in the contracts initiated in 2021) to 24.6 million annually in the modification, which represents an increase of almost 50% of the service initially planned.

The Palma EMT (Municipal Transport Company) will expand its school bus service this new school year with 13 more buses than last year and will improve its frequencies during peak hours for entering and leaving schools starting this Wednesday, September 10.

Workers from different sectors have mobilized in recent months to demand fair working conditions. Those from the TIB (Spanish Institute of Industrial Property) called an indefinite strike, which ended on Friday, after reaching an agreement with the intercity transport concessionaires in Mallorca. Subcontracted ground service workers at Palma Airport threatened to "cause a total collapse" in August if their situation did not improve. Teachers at Palma's outsourced daycare centers also went on strike in April to demand equal pay with the rest of the municipally managed centers. These three examples share a common and significant feature: they involve bidding by public administrations to offer services through private companies.

The indefinite strike by intercity bus drivers in the Balearic Islands continued this Saturday, its second day of protests, with no significant incidents, a minimum service coverage of 60%, and no new negotiation meeting between the employers and the Autonomous Union of Transport of the Balearic Islands (SATI), the organizer of the protest.

TIB workers began their indefinite strike this Friday after failing to reach an agreement with the concessionaires to resolve the dispute. The day began with a protest rally at the Palma Intermodal Station. During the protest, the workers staged a parody of the employers with a coffin bearing the words "RIP collective agreement."
