The Unió de Pagesos de Mallorca (Mallorca Farmers' Union) has launched a campaign this week targeting all the island's municipalities to defend the primary sector at a critical time. The organization has submitted a motion urging local councils to take a stand against the effects of... the trade agreement with Mercosurto demand compensation for the new CAP and to simplify access to aid for professional farmers.

The Union of Farmers of Mallorca, Asaja Baleares, UPA-AIA, and Agri-food Cooperatives maintain that the future Balearic agricultural law will be "a tool of the sector and for the sector" and have criticized other groups for "wanting to dictate" the future of farmers, ranchers, and cooperatives in the Islands. It should be noted that this legislation will allow up to 10 tourist accommodations on each farm.

Around twenty farmers from different parts of Mallorca have presented objections to the draft agrarian law for the Balearic Islands, which is currently on public display, and are demanding its immediate withdrawal. They believe the text "represents the definitive renunciation of decent and functional agricultural activity" and denounce that, under the guise of a green law, "it opens the door to greater covert urbanization, speculation, and non-agricultural uses of rural land."

Unió de Pagesos has reminded the regional minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment that "rural land must be dedicated to food production and anything other than this will be considered improper use." The agricultural union reacted after Simonet assured a interview of the ARA Baleares who does not believe "in the systematic prohibition of solar panels and chalets."

The European Commission has proposed reducing the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) by €86 billion for the period between 2028 and 2034, which in the Balearic Islands could translate into a "loss of close to €15 million per year," according to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment, Joan Simonet. Farmers in the Balearic Islands are concerned about the proposed "fairly serious" cut in European aid, according to the president of the Association of Organic Agricultural Production of Mallorca (Apaema), Miquel Coll.

Unió de Pagesos (UP) will take over the management of the Mercapalma producers' space, known as the 'situated', a fruit and vegetable market held every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday within the company's facilities. It will be held through its own entity: Unió de Pagesos de Mercapalma.
