Malnourished, with shattered joints from living crammed into a cage, blind in one eye and with very little vision in the other. The initial diagnosis was untreated leishmaniasis and polyarthritis. A man had rescued the Chihuahua from a sack in a dumpster. He thought it was a litter of kittens. "I called the police and reported the owner. He had thrown it in the manure, chip and all," Gallego recalls. When she went to trial, she asked the judge to consider the animal's situation in the sentence. "She just told me, 'Nothing is planned here.' I thought, how could that be, since it was the subject of the trial?" Marta remained silent. No one has reimbursed her for the more than 3,000 euros spent on Lolita, officially in the name of her abuser, who was sentenced to three months in prison. With no prior convictions, he is not required to serve time.

This pioneering initiative in the municipality allows for the identification of all dogs through a simple saliva sample and is free for their owners. Registration is mandatory for all dogs living in Sencelles, regardless of whether their owners are registered residents. Registration is free until March 31, 2026. Following the first sessions held on January 16 and 17, the Town Council has scheduled further sessions on January 30 and 31, with appointments still available. One of the main objectives of the genetic census is to reinforce civic responsibility and respect for public spaces. The system will allow for the identification of animals and action to be taken against uncivil behavior, especially regarding the collection of dog feces. The city council wants to emphasize the importance of keeping the streets clean and avoiding practices such as leaving bags of dog feces on the sidewalks, a problem that causes discomfort among residents.

The animal, rescued from the streets weeks ago, will now participate in educational activities, parades, and other public events. Pancho, as the pony is called, is four years old and was found wandering the streets in a vulnerable state, showing clear signs of stress and disorientation. Since his rescue, he has been at the Son Reus center, where veterinarians and caretakers have provided him with constant attention. From now on, he will live with the other horses of the Mounted Police, based in the Bellver Forest. The professionals discovered that Pancho did not have a microchip, which prevented them from identifying him and locating his owner. Given this situation, the center initiated all the necessary procedures and implemented a care protocol to ensure his physical and emotional recovery.

The Government does not require livestock farming to qualify for the subsidy for building animal enclosures, as stated in the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands of December 9, 2025, which specifies the requirements for accessing this program. For this reason, a farmer who prefers to remain anonymous has told ARA Baleares that "you can apply for subsidies for building enclosures without owning animals." Along these lines, the farmer believes that the Executive's policies should be "more in touch" with the realities of the sector. "We need to use the land, and therefore, we need to improve the enclosures, which involve very costly investments," he insists. He also points out that the Strategic Plan for the Maintenance of the Livestock Sector, approved in December 2023, makes it clear that "enclosures are very important." But, "then you see that being a livestock farmer doesn't appear in the requirements, nor does it add any points," he laments. Sources at the Ministry of Agriculture argue that the requirement of being a livestock farmer "has not been included in this line of subsidies for a long time," although they point out that this modification was not initiated by the Prohens administration. Furthermore, they indicate that the requirement could have been eliminated because it would allow people who are not livestock farmers to fence their properties to prevent, for example, the entry of wild goats or neighbors' livestock. While the subsidy requirements for traditional fences—which consist of livestock mesh supported by wooden posts—do not mention the obligation to be a livestock farmer, it is required for the other eligible categories, which include terraces and dry stone walls. The aid document describes traditional fences intended for the delimitation or protection of agricultural or livestock areas as eligible for subsidies, provided that the maximum distance between posts does not exceed four meters.

According to a statement from the island institution, an environmental agent located the remains and alerted both animal health technicians and Civil Guard investigators. Following an initial inspection, veterinary services confirmed that the remains are dog bones in a state of decomposition, which apparently were deposited there years ago. Other waste of various kinds was also found at the same location, including bags containing the remains of about twenty animals. Now, according to information provided by the Council, Seprona will be in charge of conducting the investigation to clarify the origin and circumstances of this illegal dumping. The island council has reiterated the importance of properly managing animal waste to preserve the territory and guarantee the island's health and environmental safety.

In 2024, in the Pitiusas Islands—where this species has been classified as invasive since 2013 and, therefore, specific campaigns are carried out to eradicate it—the regional government captured 3,878 snakes, compared to 2,007 the previous year. "Specimens of up to almost two meters have been found in the Islands, although the normal length of an adult snake is between one and one and a half meters with a weight of 500 grams," explains Tomàs Bosch, head of Species Protection at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment.

The operation took place last Tuesday when agents from the Underwater Activities Specialist Group (GEAS) and members of the Maritime Rescue Service from Portocristo were conducting a joint operation in the northeast of Mallorca. When they spotted the animal floating in the sea, the agents carefully brought it aboard their vessel to prevent further harm. They then contacted the Palma Aquarium Foundation, which runs the marine wildlife recovery center, and transported the turtle to the port of Portocolom, where it was cared for by specialists. The turtle, named Mimosa – after the Maritime Rescue vessel that participated in the rescue – will be examined and receive veterinary care before its release is considered. Sources from the agency remind the public that, if they find an injured sea turtle, they should call 112 and not attempt to remove any plastic, threads, or nets that may be causing pressure. The animal should be placed in the shade, covered with a damp towel, but without covering its head or shell. The rescue of Mimosa highlights the impact of marine pollution on the wildlife of the Balearic Islands, where several turtles affected by plastic waste or fishing hooks must be treated each year.
