The film Lionel, by Carlos Saiz, has been the big winner of the 16th edition of the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest, which this Sunday lowered the curtain after registering its most massive edition. The festival also honored the French composer Alexandre Desplat, winner of two Oscars and distinguished with the Master of Cinema award for a career that includes soundtracks such as The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Shape of Water.

The Atlàntida Film Fest reaches its sixteenth edition with an intense trajectory, which has taken it from being a pioneering and unusual experience, an online film showcase, to becoming one of the benchmark events in the country: first position among festivals held in the summer, second best-rated among all events, according to data from the Ministry of Culture. Like any relevant film festival, a good number of stars have walked through its openings and closings: Liv Ullmann, Michael Douglas, Judi Dench, Vanessa Redgrave, Isabelle Huppert, Joseph Fiennes, Britt Ekland… This year, Gael García Bernal, Javier and Carlos Bardem, Fernando Trueba, Jaime Chávarri, Rodrigo Sorogoyen and the Mallorcan actress Victoria Luengo, among others.

The sixteenth edition of the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest, which will take place from July 24 to August 2 in Mallorca, will bring together more than 300 guests and will program 165 titles, half of them absolute premieres in Spain, with the presence of figures such as Javier Bardem, Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Gael Garcia Bernal, Fernando Trueba, David Lowery and Victoria Luengo.

Guillem Miró's new film, a black comedy titled Mario which tells the story of a seemingly perfect young man who turns out not to be so perfect, is just one of the locally produced projects included in this year's Atlantis program, 30% of which are local productions. The festival will also host the premiere of the documentary Baaldo, a pop emergency, by David Álvarez López, July 31, and Stick out your chest, by Rubén Capilla and Àlex Rodríguez, with the testimony of eight women diagnosed with breast cancer, which can be seen on the 28th. Also screened, in this case on July 29, is Miguel Eek's new film, Paper shelters, focusing on the life hidden among the shelves of libraries. "As a child, my father took me every week to 'check out books,' a ritual that, almost forty years later, I still repeat with my daughter," explains Eek, who defines the documentary as "a choral story about intimacy."
