Terraferida's latest analysis has confirmed the trend: overcrowding in the Balearic Islands is no longer a phenomenon exclusive to the summer months. Based on data from the Balearic Institute of Statistics (Ibestat), the organization indicates that the winter months of 2025 already register more people—residents and tourists alike—than the peak tourist seasons of 25 years ago, demonstrating a sustained increase in population density throughout the year.

The population of the Balearic Islands reached 1,249,844 inhabitants on January 1, 2025, representing an increase of 18,076 people in one year, 1.5% higher than the national increase (1%), according to the first data from the 2025 Annual Population Census published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This increase places the archipelago as the second fastest-growing autonomous community, tied with the Community of Madrid and second only to the Valencian Community (2%). The Balearic Islands have 622,673 men and 613,910 women, according to the same source. Ibiza is the ninth municipality in Spain with the largest population increase in the last year, rising by 2.6% to 54,628 residents.

Menorca has gained almost 7,000 inhabitants since the pandemic. The island now has 102,477 registered residents, and an increasing number of those born elsewhere are now living there. The tranquility and quality of life outweigh the drawbacks of seasonality and transportation due to the island's double insularity, and this is ultimately convincing many foreigners and mainlanders to settle there.

The population of the Balearic Islands has grown by 0.93% compared to last year. This is according to provisional data from the Continuous Population Survey (ECP) as of October 1st, published this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Compared to the previous quarter, the population grew by 0.20% in the third quarter, reaching 1.25 million inhabitants. Of the total population of the archipelago, 625,685 are men and 629,376 are women. According to the statistics, 974,288 people live in Mallorca; 165,648 in Ibiza; 103,281 in Menorca; and 11,844 in Formentera.

If the Balearic Islands were a factory, their recent history would be that of a center that has significantly increased its production (155% between 2000 and 2023), and that has achieved the second-highest growth in the entire Spanish state, behind only the community of Madrid. But a more analytical look, such as that conducted by three specialists commissioned by the Círculo de Economía de Mallorca, reveals a key fact that explains the current situation: this factory that is the Islands has had to hire so many new employees to produce more that when it comes time to distribute wages, the result is a "very significant" inefficiency, as it says.

The foreign-born population of the Balearic Islands grew by 3.42% in July compared to the previous year, three times as much as the population born in Spain, which remained virtually unchanged and is growing at less than 1%. Specifically, the Balearic Islands reached 1.25 million inhabitants in the seventh month of the year, of which 891,890 were born in Spain and 359,196 were born abroad.

The Prime Minister, Marga Prohens, and the Speaker of the Parliament, Gabriel Le Senne, have conveyed contradictory messages to Felipe VI regarding the demographic situation in the Balearic Islands. While Prohens spoke of the Balearic Islands as a prime example of a Spain that is filling up, Le Senne expressed his concern about the low birth rate in the islands. Both met with the Spanish king at the Almudaina Palace.
