Palma City Council will activate a special bus service reinforcement plan this Sunday for the match between RCE Mallorca and RCE Espanyol at the Mallorca Son Moix stadium at 2:00 PM. The plan includes increased service on lines L8 and L33 to facilitate fans' arrival at the stadium and their return to Palma city center after the match. The aim is to expedite entry and exit, encourage the use of public transport, and reduce the presence of private vehicles in the stadium area. Specifically, line L8—which connects Sindicat with Son Moix—will have additional buses in the hours leading up to the match. These services will be in addition to the regular frequency, which is approximately every 15 minutes during that time. Once the match has finished, fans can take buses from both the L8 and L33 lines, which will be parked at the stadium entrance on Camino de los Reyes. Heading towards the city center, the L8 will follow its usual route to the Sindicato interchange. As for the increased service on the L33 line, it will take passengers to the Camp Redó and Matadero neighborhoods and along the General Riera corridor to Son Fuster. This service will also pass through the Plaça d'Espanya interchange, facilitating connections with other bus lines. Additionally, users of the BiciPalma municipal bike-sharing service can use the new virtual station located near Son Moix, allowing subscribers to cycle to the match.

The initiative, championed by Santiago Abascal's party, was modified through a PP amendment to extend the ban to buses operated by the Municipal Transport Company (EMT). The text was approved in its entirety. In general terms, the proposal urges the City Council to require anyone entering a municipal building to do so with their face uncovered "for reasons of security and identity verification." The document defines "complete face covering" as that produced by garments or clothing that totally or substantially prevent facial identification.

Urban transport has grown by 51.7% compared to 2019 and by more than 80% since 2022, according to the municipal company's annual report.

Intercity public transport in Mallorca reached another record high in 2025. Throughout the past year, the train, metro, and TIB buses carried a total of 41.3 million journeys, a figure that consolidates the upward trend of recent years and places the system above the 40 million user mark. This data represents a 5% increase compared to 2024 and a 23% increase compared to 2023, two years in which public transport was also free for users. Growth, therefore, continues despite the normalization of service and confirms a gradual shift in mobility habits on the island. By mode of transport, TIB intercity buses accounted for the majority of journeys, with 29.7 million trips, 5% more than the previous year. The train recorded 9.2 million users, a 4% increase, while the metro saw the greatest growth, with 2.4 million journeys, an 11% increase. One of the most relevant elements of the data is the growing proportion of residents, who now represent 76% of total users. Overall, the use of public transport by the resident population increased by 8%, with a 9% increase in intercity buses and a 6% increase in rail services. This means that 94% of train and metro journeys are made by Mallorca residents, as well as 68% of journeys on TIB buses, an indicator that points to the consolidation of public transport as a regular option beyond peak tourist seasons.

The new system is already operational on approximately half of the fleet, around 13 buses. Card payments also allow for automatic discounts of 40% for the first passenger and up to 60% for accompanying passengers, in groups of up to six people. With this addition, EMT aligns itself with the payment model already in place across the rest of the TIB system—train, metro, and intercity bus—and takes a step forward in facilitating the use of public transport for occasional users, visitors, or people who do not have any transport pass.

The board of directors of Palma's Municipal Transport Company (EMT) gave the green light this Friday to a proposal to increase the price of a single ticket from two to three euros starting in 2026. However, the increase would only affect people who do not use any of the available transport cards – the Citizen Card, the TIB card, or the new card when boarding the bus. The City Council points out that Congress approved on Thursday the continuation of free public transport in the Balearic Islands through 2026, so users who identify themselves with one of the current cards will not have to pay the increase. In any case, the increase in the single ticket price still needs to be debated and voted on by the full City Council. The Palma Socialist Party (PSOE) has strongly criticized the proposal and demanded that the mayor, Jaime Martínez, withdraw what it calls a "high fare." The Socialist deputy spokesperson, Francesc Dalmau, criticized the PP and Vox parties, saying they "don't believe in public transport," and recalled the price increase applied to Bicipalma this summer. According to Dalmau, while the Spanish government "protects free public transport," the PP in Palma City Council "increases fares, making it so that only a few can benefit from the bus." The Socialists have also questioned the implementation of the new Single Card, which is supposed to integrate fares with the Intermodal Card. They claim it raises "more questions than answers": currently, it's not possible to recover the balance on the Citizen Card, which could be lost, and the top-up machines still don't accept the new card.

The Spanish Congress of Deputies definitively approved the Sustainable Mobility Law this Thursday, which includes a key amendment for the Balearic Islands: free public transport starting in 2026. The measure, which will also apply to the Canary Islands, was championed by Senator Juanjo Ferrer, representing Ibiza and Formentera, and included in the text that the Senate is sending to the Senda (a political platform). The initiative received support from the People's Party (PP), the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), and Vicenç Vidal, a deputy from Sumar-MÁS, among others. Both the PP and the eco-sovereignists and United Left celebrated the approval, which they consider "beneficial for the citizens of the Islands." Vidal emphasized that the inclusion of the amendment was made possible thanks to "tenacious diplomacy aimed at shifting the PSOE's stance towards the interests of the Balearic Islands," a strategy pursued jointly with Ferrer. "This measure is fair and necessary: we are an island territory with limited public transport, high costs, and a heavy reliance on private vehicles. Guaranteeing free public transport means mobility for everyone, especially families and young people, and it is both strategic and environmentally friendly," stated the eco-sovereignist deputy. From the People's Party, the deputy spokesperson in Congress, José Vicente Marí Bosó, emphasized his party's role in the Senate: "Without the PP's vote today, the amendment could not have been brought to Congress. Thanks to the PP, free public transport has been ratified in 2026," adding that they paid for it. For his part, the head of Institutional Policy for United Left of the Balearic Islands, Óscar Rodríguez, described the decision as "a victory for the work of the senator from Ibiza and Formentera and the progressive forces." Rodríguez has insisted that one of her party's objectives is for free public transport "to become a permanent right for the citizens of the Balearic Islands" and has called on the regional government to "improve the funding for the transfer of land transport responsibilities to the island councils, which is currently underfunded, to guarantee the sustainability of the measure and improve the service."
