The tranquility in Sineu and the Son Venrell area has been disrupted once again. The Macrogranges No platform has reported a new manure spill to the Ministry of Agriculture on the property where the mega-farm was to be built. It occurred on Thursday, March 19th. According to the organization, the spill caused "strong odors" that spread throughout the municipality of Sineu and were clearly noticeable even to residents of Lloret de Vistalegre, generating considerable public concern. The incident was not only documented by local witnesses, but the Sineu Local Police and agents from the Seprona (Nature Protection Service of the Civil Guard) were also notified and carried out the necessary on-site investigations. The platform has expressed its "grave concern" about the environmental impact these practices could have in an area "considered vulnerable, especially due to the risk of nitrate contamination of the subsoil and groundwater."

Work has begun on the first phase of the renovation of the Convent of San Francisco de Paula, also known as the Convent of the Minims, in Sineu. This project is being carried out by the Consell de Mallorca (Island Council of Mallorca) and the Diocese of Sineu as part of an agreement for the restoration of ecclesiastical heritage sites. The Church of San Francisco de Paula is one of the municipality's most important heritage sites. According to a preliminary study, the building was in "generally acceptable condition, but with evident problems of water leaks and deterioration of the cladding, making intervention necessary." This initial phase, costing €70,000, involves monitoring existing cracks and focusing particularly on the roof to prevent further leaks. This intervention is considered urgent and includes actions such as the installation of crack gauges to monitor cracks, the repair of roof tiles, and the waterproofing of the facade's crown. The most significant intervention is the repair and waterproofing of the facade, which accounts for the majority of the budget. According to the mayor of Sineu, Tomeu Mulet, "the works will last 15 days, since the building is one of the places where the Holy Week floats are stored, and the scaffolding must be removed to allow for their removal." The convent church was built starting in the 17th century and forms part of the collective memory of the municipality. In addition to its architectural interest, the building is considered a key element of the town's urban landscape. The restoration project is thus part of the effort to preserve this heritage for future generations.

A 57-year-old woman was investigated by the Civil Guard after allegedly stealing an acorn-fed Iberian ham worth 420 euros from a supermarket in Sineu. The Sineu Town Council continues to take steps to improve municipal infrastructure, this time focusing on the drinking water supply network, where an investment exceeding €200,000 will be made. The Council has put out to tender the project to replace a section of the drinking water network around the Plaza de la Quintana and the Plaza de los Reyes de Mallorca, an initiative supported by the 2024 Water Pact, with a budget of €184,134.44. In addition, the network on Jaume I Street will be renovated, with a budget of almost €45,000. The main objective of this project is to guarantee the urban water supply within the municipality and replace sections that currently have deficiencies or have become obsolete. The works will affect key points in the upper part of the town, including Llorito, Palma, and Toros streets, as well as the aforementioned Quintana and Reyes de Mallorca squares. Tomeu Mulet, mayor of Sineu, explains that "water losses in these areas had already been reduced a few years ago with the sectorization of the network, but even so, network renewal was advisable." Mulet also explains that "in addition to renewing the network, we will take the opportunity to repave all these areas." The plan includes the installation of new pipes and valves, as well as the construction of concrete manholes and inspection chambers to facilitate future maintenance of the system. The Provincial Court of Palma has sentenced a woman to 17 years in prison for killing her 91-year-old aunt and stuffing her body into a suitcase in Sineu. The defendant reached a plea agreement with the prosecution and admitted to the homicide charge, the Balearic Islands High Court (TSJIB) reported. The presiding judge of the jury trial, in a hearing held Friday morning, handed down the 17-year prison sentence and absolute disqualification from holding public office orally. The written judgment will be issued and made public in the coming days. According to the prosecution, the defendant took in her 91-year-old aunt, whom she cared for due to her progressive cognitive decline and the resulting memory lapses and difficulties walking and feeding herself. On April 14, 2024, he began to beat her "indiscriminately," sat on her, pressing his knees down on her, and stabbed her in the chest, causing her death. In an attempt to evade responsibility for these criminal acts, he tried to stage an accidental death and devised a plan to deceive both the medical services and the police. To do this, he scrubbed the floor, cleaned the blood from the furniture in the house, and placed the victim's lifeless body in a large suitcase. He then drove it to his home in Palma, from where he called the health center and emergency services, telling them that the woman had died and requesting a death certificate. The woman who confessed to the Sineu suitcase murder had already shown her willingness to reach the agreement that materialized this Friday and accepted the 17-year prison sentence requested by the prosecution. The Catalan government is awaiting a report from Endesa, the company that owns the Sineu mines, before proceeding with the purchase. As explained by Sineu councilor and MP Pedro Álvarez, "this area, abandoned in the 1980s with the decline and disappearance of the mining industry, has become, over time, a wetland and forested environment rich in biodiversity." This area is included in the Balearic inventory of wetlands and, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF Spain), is a site of high biological importance. The area is intended to be used as a recreational space, and in addition to the portion owned by Endesa, there are other lands belonging to families in Sineu who have already approved the purchase. The pond formed in the former Fangar lignite mine, within the municipality of Sineu, has become established over the years as a wetland of environmental interest in the interior of the Pla de Mallorca. The mine, owned by Endesa, was active between 1982 and 1987 and was abandoned due to water seepage from the aquifer, which led to the formation of the current pond. With an area of approximately two hectares and a permanent freshwater source, the site is included in the Balearic Inventory of Wetlands as a mining pond and has been designated by the Sineu City Council as an Area of Singular Landscape Interest. Despite its artificial origin, the pond supports riparian habitats and diverse species of flora and fauna, such as tamarind trees, reeds, and breeding birds like the moorhen, coot, and grebe. Endesa has carried out environmental restoration work, including the removal of mining debris and the improvement of access. Despite its high biological value, as considered by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the site does not yet have any protected status as a natural area.

The process of expropriations, temporary occupations, and the creation of the necessary easements for the construction of the new main water pipeline connecting Maria de la Salut and Sineu has already begun. This announcement was made last Saturday by the Director General of Water Resources, Joan Calafat, during the Water Debate in the Pla region, organized by Pla de Mallorca XXI and the Climate Academy, with the collaboration of the Pla Commonwealth, held in Lloret. This project, considered strategic for guaranteeing the water supply to the center of the island, aims to carry water from Maria de la Salut to the plot of land purchased by the Commonwealth in the Dama area, on the road between Sineu and Petra. The Socialists of Sineu have submitted a series of objections this week to the proposed amendments to the Subsidiary Planning Regulations with a clear objective: to prevent the establishment of large, high-intensity livestock farms in the municipality. The proposal aims to limit the size of future farms and prevent the accumulation of several large-capacity facilities in the same area. According to the Socialists, the urban planning document currently open for public comment could allow new farms with up to 560 Gross Livestock Units (UBG), a threshold roughly equivalent to 40,000 laying hens in the case of poultry. This possibility would be included within the area located between two and four kilometers from urban centers, which, according to the Socialist Party (PSOE), would open the door to mega-farms. "A 40,000-laying-hen farm in Sineu would be excessive, and the new Subsidiary Regulations must prevent it," states the Socialist spokesperson in the municipality, José Manuel García, who proposes reducing the limit to 280 UBG. Defense of a traditional and family-based agricultural model

The group asserts that the establishment of large-scale intensive farms contradicts the town's productive essence. "We defend the agricultural model based on family farms and extensive agriculture, which is what has historically defined Sineu," García emphasizes. According to him, the regional decree allows for large facilities, but municipal planning regulations can limit them to protect the land. Sineu is the Balearic municipality where housing prices have risen the most in the last year. Specifically, according to data from the real estate portal Idealista, the price per square meter currently stands at €2,915, representing a 27% increase compared to October 2024. Across Spain, seven of the ten Spanish municipalities with the highest increases in used housing prices over the past year are located in Sineu. Specifically, Malpica (A Coruña) has seen the largest price increase, with a 57% rise in the last year. Following Malpica, the top three are two Alicante municipalities, Cox and Rafal, with housing price increases of 54% and 53%, respectively. Next on this list are the Madrid municipality of Villarejo de Salvanés with a 48% year-on-year increase, Torre-Pacheco (Murcia), where housing prices rose by 46%, and Font-Àlber (Murcia), where they increased by 44%.
