It was the first of the four evenings presenting their latest album LUX (2026) in Barcelona, at the Palau Sant Jordi, last April. He turned to Llorenç Barceló from Manacor, his pianist, to toast with him, who had poured two glasses of wine, and introduced him as a "true Mallorcan." "Llorenç, do you want to say something? Because I always tell my version of the story, and I don't know about you…", he told him. He then replied: "About which story? The one about Taller de Músics?" And Rosalía continued: "No, about our story. It's your moment, you have ten seconds to summarize our story." Faced with the anticipation and the ovation generated, he modestly added: "Well, we met at Taller de Músics and became friends and here we are, after 15 or 20 years." And Rosalía concluded: "Sometimes they boo us uuuuh and no, we have always been just friends and you have always been a great friend. Thank you, Llorenç!

It's not like there's a huge market for DJs who treat their sets like doctoral theses and read the dance floor inside out, subduing the indie crowd with dancehall and hip hop, or coming out as die-hard Fania Records fans at a punk party. It's easier to copy yourself than to try to break new ground. That's why Rosalía's new album, LuxIt has a value that goes beyond the specific work, far beyond itself. The Catalan singer could have continued exploiting the path that has brought her fame, recognition, and a windfall of millions. But she has decided to do the opposite: embrace uncertainty, take time disconnecting from the record label's dictatorship, explore unknown languages and registers, expose herself to making mistakes.

Mainstream critics praised her, audiences soared with every interview she gave, and even the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, congratulated her for being "the third most listened-to artist" globally for a few days. But what makes the success of Rosalía's new album so remarkable is... Lux (Sony Music Entertainment), is it also paradoxically, and in a more qualitative, artistic, profound sense, a failure?
