Palma City Council has unanimously approved the purchase of Can Pesquet, in Son Sardina, and the former Iris cinema, in El Viver, two spaces that could be converted into new public facilities for both neighborhoods. The proposal must now go through next week's municipal plenary session.

Dozens of people gathered this Sunday afternoon in front of Can Pesquet, on Passatemps street in Son Sardina, to demand, once again, that Cort acquire the plot and promote a public square and community center managed by the people. The protest, called by the Popular Assembly of Son Sardina and la Garriga, also served to demand that the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, fulfill the commitment that, according to the organizers, he made a year ago to buy the space.

The residents of Son Sardina will take to the streets again on Sunday, September 6, to demand that the Can Pesquet plot be turned into a public space. The rally, called for 7 p.m. in front of the land, comes a year after the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, announced that Cort had begun negotiations to acquire the 1,600-square-meter plot with the intention of building a neighborhood center, a library, and a square, as well as studying the possibility of a car park.

The Can Pesquet plot, in Son Sardina, has changed hands while the Palma City Council tries to make effective the promise of the mayor, Jaime Martínez, to turn it into a public space. One year after the mayor announced that Cort had initiated the process to acquire the 1,600 square meters to build a neighborhood center, a library, a square, and study a parking lot, the plot remains private. Now the Consistory assures that it is negotiating with the new owner and that, if there is no agreement, it will resort to expropriation.

Palma City Council has forgotten its promise to acquire the Can Pesquet site, which has been in the hands of a vulture fund for years, to convert it into a square and a recreational center, according to residents of Son Sardina. In fact, a banner for the real estate company Solvia, part of Banc Sabadell, is now installed on this site. They point out that this fact increases "the discrediting of the policies, both by action and inaction, of the current City Council."
