"The data is outrageous, and the Administration has legal tools to provide solutions. What is lacking is political courage," stated the spokesperson for MÉS per Palma, Neus Truyol. In this regard, she pointed out that Palma should not be a place where "a few profit, nor a dead end for the majority," and therefore asserted that "homes are for living in, not for speculation."</p>]]></description>

These are, as one might expect, climate tourists, fleeing the unbearable heat that climate change has inflicted on the Mediterranean coast during the summer months, and seeking places where they can be more comfortable. The writer Xuan Bello spoke to me about this the last time I saw him, in the summer of 2024; he died during the summer of that harsh and now vanished year of 2025. Bello felt sorry for the people of Madrid ("They've already foisted a high-speed train from Madrid to Oviedo on us; we're cooked," he reflected angrily, but not resignedly, because Xuan Bello was not a person who resigned himself). As is often said about Palma these days: a city with all the drawbacks of large cities, and none, or very few, of their advantages. A city that over the last half-century has grown haphazardly, ignoring planning (when it has existed), at the mercy of speculative pressures, always under the tutelage and demands of the tourism sector.</p>]]></description>

This is the automatic reclassification that municipalities will be able to carry out in the so-called Transition Areas (TAs). The figures provided by the entity correspond to a study carried out in seven of the most populated municipalities in Mallorca: Palma, Llucmajor, Manacor, Inca, Marratxí, Calvià, and Alcúdia. Until now, these zones were intended to curb urban sprawl and reserve land for basic infrastructure and facilities. However, the new regulations radically modify this function, allowing construction with densities of up to 225 inhabitants per hectare.</p>]]></description>

Or we can consider them, depending on how you look at it, a first step toward living the way Hollywood stars are supposed to. It's curious that, in the age of social media and algorithms, real estate agency windows still display photos of the type they sell: houses, apartments, and building plots (an adjective that has lost much of its meaning because now almost all of them are buildable). But these windows must be effective, because they achieve what they want, which is to attract attention. This is at least the effect they give when we see people stop in front of these windows and open their eyes for a while, sometimes for a long time, in front of the advertisements, which are generally A4 sheets hung on the glass with a suction cup. The sheets in question usually have a printed photo, as well as the main details of the property for sale: location, square footage, room layout (if there is more than one, per room), amenities (if there are any in the house or in the area), and, of course, what everyone wants to see, what everyone wants to know and understand: the price. And this is where a truly important change has occurred.</p>]]></description>
