Providence has decreed that the celebrations surrounding Balearic Islands Day coincide with the start of this major tourism fair, ITB Berlin. What a stressful situation for our authorities, their hearts and schedules jammed with folkloric activities here and there. Here, speeches about curbing immigration. There, speeches about encouraging all the Germans who want to or can to sell.

This entire scene unexpectedly bursts into my gaze, lost in thought as I stare out the window. Is this the airport construction?I ask myself, elusive. I wish I hadn't asked myself this question. I don't want to know the answer. A pang of anguish shoots into the pit of my stomach. I try to look away, but the vehicle keeps circling, between merges and roundabouts, and there's no horizon to take refuge in. Everywhere I look, I see only powerlessness, unease, a legacy: a terminal that—if you'll excuse me—never ends; commercial planes, private planes, planes every minute; an army of neatly lined taxis; trolleysNorth Face suitcases, very tall people.

This institutional presence comes after the Balearic Islands have once again broken visitor records, approaching 19 million tourists. a figure that has an impact on the political and social discussion about overcrowdingFor its part, Germany is seen by the Council as a strategic source market due to its "long average stay and loyalty." Faced with the need to diversify crops and thanks to the increased demand for avocados, the area's farmers opted for this tropical crop. Some have even uprooted orange trees and replaced them with avocados, whose fruit sells for more than oranges. Furthermore, it ripens after being picked, making it less urgent to harvest than an orange, as it remains green on the tree. There are currently 22.25 hectares of irrigated avocado orchards in Mallorca and 8.32 hectares in Ibiza, primarily of the Hass (the most widely traded variety worldwide) and Bacon varieties. A large portion of the island's avocados are consumed in Europe, especially in Germany.

The anecdote is told by Victoria Vives, one of the technicians at Can Torró: "A few years ago, a very scared woman came to us and said: 'But what is this? What kind of library is this, where everyone can come, entire families with their children?'" The iconoclastic project was launched 35 years ago at the initiative of Reinhard Mohn. He was a wealthy German tourist, but not just any tourist. Aside from money, he was a compulsive bibliophile, a passion he had inherited from his family, owners of a prominent publishing group. Born in 1921 in Gütersloh (in northern Germany), in 1962 Mohn launched the Círculo de Lectores in Spain, a club where subscribers could buy music and books directly from home (it would disappear in 2019 at the hands of Grupo Planeta). In 1977, he also founded the Bertelsmann Stiftung cultural foundation, based in his hometown.
