Palma City Council will have its own desalination plant. Driven by Emaya, the installation will cost around 135 million euros, according to the sustainable water management plan project. This facility, which is planned for the year 2035 and will have a maximum capacity of up to 36 cubic hectometers (hm3) per year, is proposed as an "structural pillar" to guarantee supply. The action aims to respond to the water shortage that water resource technicians of the Government anticipated in their reports on the General Plan of Palma in 2023.

The Palma Regional Government and City Council presented an agreement this Monday that some experts consider historic: Cort will purchase up to 12.9 cubic hectometers from the desalination plant. This agreement ends a tense relationship between Palma City Council and the Regional Government regarding water, as Jaime Martínez, who made no statement at the end of the event and left the spotlight to the President of the Regional Government, Marga Prohens, did not want to purchase desalinated water. The reason for this reluctance is that the Government produces desalinated water through Abaqua, and therefore, purchasing it means paying for it and consequently having to foot the bill. Prohens has managed to end Palma's water war, and Emaya will purchase more of the desalination plant's production.

The five municipalities of Ibiza have agreed to supply themselves 100% with water from desalination plants and reduce the use of well water in municipal networks to the bare minimum. This decision was made at the Council of Mayors held at the headquarters of the Island Council, where the President of the Council, Vicent Marí, explained that more desalinated water is produced during the off-season than the municipalities consume and that replacing well water "will reduce the pressure on aquifers" by around one cubic hectometer.

The Balearic Government has taken the first step toward expanding the Alcudia desalination plant, and will do so through the Sustainable Tourism Tax (STT). Specifically, the Regional Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle has initiated the process of contracting technical assistance services for drafting the expansion project for the Alcudia Bay Marine Water Desalination Plant (SWD) . The project represents an investment of €207,748.35 (excluding VAT), financed by the SDT 2024-2025 program - Pact for Water Management and Resource Guarantee.
