Eduardo Maynau, delegate of Electrical Grid In the Balearic Islands, it was argued this Wednesday that the entry point of the second electrical cable connecting to the Peninsula via La Herradura is "undoubtedly the option with the least environmental impact on the Posidonia oceanica habitat," considered to be of European Community interest. According to the Red Eléctrica delegation in the Balearic Islands, all submarine electrical connection projects include "very detailed studies carried out by an independent third party" on geophysics, geotechnics, bathymetry, fishing, navigation, and seabed characterization before proposing any landing.

The Balearic Islands have increased their installed renewable energy capacity by 10.1% in 2025, rising from a total of 541 MW to 596 MW. This increase allows for a power map of the Islands where almost a quarter (24.4%) comes from renewable sources, the vast majority of which (91.8%) is renewable.

Red Eléctrica has denied that the project for the second electrical link between the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, known as Penbal 2, is based on "obsolete cartography," as denounced by the Association for a New Agreement for the Alcudia Cable (ANACA). The company maintains that the studies on the seabed and route alternatives were carried out using its own updated data, the result of specific marine surveys conducted between 2020 and 2021. According to the company, responsible for energy transmission within the Redeia group, the project and its environmental impact study will allow for the definition of a new land-based route. Red Eléctrica states that it will respond promptly and appropriately to all objections submitted and that it will implement the final project authorized by the relevant authorities.

Today, the Balearic Islands are connected to each other and to the Peninsula by submarine electrical interconnections. This has been a huge step forward in ensuring the security of the electricity supply on our islands and, in turn, is key to the energy transition because these links provide us with energy that is mostly from renewable sources.
