A PP councilor at the Council of Mallorca demanded this Friday before the United Nations the holding of a self-determination referendum in Western Sahara "that includes the option of independence." The head of Social Welfare and president of the Majorcan Institute of Social Affairs (IMAS), Guillermo Sánchez, defended in New York that the Sahrawi people be able to “freely decide their future.” He did so just one day after Vox, the popular party's governing partner at the island institution, lashed out harshly against the international cooperation policies promoted by the Council itself. Despite governing together at the Council, the PP and Vox thus maintain conflicting positions regarding the institution's external action.

The general elections on November 29th burst into the plenary session of the Council of Mallorca this Thursday. The national political debate permeated two initiatives that, in principle, had a marked island character: the allocation of 1.8 million euros for the Majorcan Solidarity Fund and the creation of a commission to demand the return of the Costitx bulls. Both were approved, but they served to bring to light the differences between the PP and Vox, partners in government at the island institution.

The Council of Mallorca is now prepared for the rainy days approaching this autumn: the island institution has spent 4,999.72 euros on corporate umbrellas. The Presidency department explains that these gifts are mostly distributed to the elderly during the activities in which they participate, although the contract documentation does not specify the number of units acquired nor at which events they have been distributed.

Llorenç Galmés admits that Mallorca "has reached the limit and cannot grow anymore", but he will not modify the main territorial and tourist planning instruments that the Council has to curb this growth. This is the contradiction that GOB and Terraferida have pointed out after meeting this Thursday with the island president at the Royal Palace. The entities left with a clear conclusion: "The feeling is the same as we had with Marga Prohens".

The debate over tourist containment in Mallorca no longer revolves solely around how many places there may be in the future, but also about what is happening with those that already exist and can return to the market. Since the entry into force of Decree Law 4/2025, the Council of Mallorca has sold 1,020 tourist places and reserved 876 more through the exchange, while it has renewed the authorizations of 1,649 multi-family dwellings that total 6,730 places, according to data provided by the institution in response to a battery of 32 questions from MÉS per Mallorca.

The proposal for a law by the Council of Mallorca on the regulation of vehicle influx on the island of Mallorca has already encountered its first obstacle: the vehicle employers' association rent a car, Baleval. The Balearic Association of Vehicles with and without a driver brings together large, medium and small operators that carry out their activity on the Islands. In a forceful document registered in Parliament on September 17, Baleval has presented 22 amendments to the initiative that promises to limit the entry of rental vehicles to Mallorca with the aim of slowing down the circulatory collapse and saturation.Baleval considers that the bill promoted by the executive of Llorenç Galmés restricts access to an economic activity without demonstrating that rental vehicles are the specific and main cause of the problem: "The law is based on an attribution of singular responsibility to the vehicle rental sector that does not appear sufficiently accredited in the legislative file". Therefore, if this responsibility is not accredited, they consider that the law may result in being arbitrary or discriminatory. They believe that the bill does not incorporate a sufficient analysis of less restrictive regulatory alternatives nor does it accredit why the specific limitation of rental vehicles is the most appropriate measure. The employers' association maintains that limiting fleets and distributing vehicle quotas is an "intense intervention" in the market that requires solid data, a detailed justification, and the study of less restrictive alternatives.

The Council of Mallorca will refer files on illegal tourist offerings to the Public Prosecutor's Office that, in the face of an order to cease activity, have disobeyed in a repeat manner. The Department of Tourism directed by Guillem Ginard is finalizing the complaints and expects to present them to the Public Prosecutor's Office "during this autumn". "We will take the multi-recidivism and the repeated failure to comply with the cessation of activity to the Public Prosecutor's Office," explained the island councilor.

The Council of Mallorca also began the term this Thursday with the first plenary session after the summer. Beyond the debates that were taking place inside the plenary hall of the Royal Palace, a curious image could be captured in front of the entrance portal to the headquarters of the island institution.

The Council of Mallorca will commission new legal reports and a new "more powerful and extensive" audit before making any decision regarding the current concession with Tirme for the treatment of urban solid waste. MÉS per Mallorca has registered a series of questions to the Consell de Mallorca to ascertain the degree of compliance with the Plan for Intervention in Tourist Areas (PIAT), approved six years ago, and has accused the island government of the PP of not applying the tools provided to contain tourist pressure.

The Mallorcan production Un passeig pel Born, directed by Mallorcan Nick Igea, has won the award for best European film at the Bretagne International Film Festival, in France. With this recognition, the film has accumulated 48 international awards obtained at festivals organized in cities such as Vienna, Sydney, London, Paris, Florence, New York, and Los Angeles.

The shipping companies have warned this Thursday that the future law to limit vehicles in Mallorca could shift some of the tourism that currently arrives by car towards air transport. The president of Baleària, Adolfo Utor, gave the example of the restrictions applied in Ibiza, where the arrival of tourist vehicles has fallen by 11% during the first half of 2026. As he warned, this limitation could end up favoring visitors arriving by plane. Nevertheless, he insisted that it will be necessary to measure to what extent the regulation is effective and what results it yields.

The Mallorcan Business Circle (CMN) and the Mare Mar Foundation have requested the Consell de Mallorca for the dismissal of the managing director of the Maritime Museum of Mallorca, Albert Forés. The two entities, promoters of the original Museum project, denounce a management marked by "paralysis", "inefficiency" and "alleged irregularities", while the institution defends that it complies with the Consortium's objectives and claims the work done in recent years.

The water crisis in Pla de Mallorca is entering a new chapter in terms of savings due to the lack of water resources in the region. The Algaida City Council yesterday approved a motion from the PSIB governing team, through which the plenary session requests the Consell de Mallorca to stop using water from the municipality's aquifers "with urgency" for the cleaning and maintenance tasks of the Manacor road (Ma-15). The motion was approved unanimously by all parties present in the plenary session, PSIB, PP, and MÉS per Algaida.

MÉS per Mallorca has accused Llorenç Galmés's government of "dismantling environmental guarantees" to facilitate the arrival of waste from Ibiza to Mallorca. The eco-sovereignist party maintains that the modification of the conditions initially foreseen for the transfer confirms that the Council is adapting the rules to the project's needs, instead of prioritizing the island's environmental interests.

The Consell de Mallorca does not find "any notable relevance" in the private use of the island institution's cars by the vice president of Vox, Pedro Bestard. To reach this conclusion, it has been necessary to wait weeks, until the two reports commissioned by president Llorenç Galmés were completed. The first was carried out by the Technical Secretariat of the Department of Environment and states that Bestard still keeps three cars for his exclusive use, that he lied about their signage and that he has made unjustified use of them unrelated to his position, in addition to keeping them to the detriment of the needs of the officials in his area. The second report was carried out by the General Secretariat and the Council's Intervention, and it is precisely this one that indicates that it cannot be deduced that the use of the cars is improper. This document is limited to recommending that an instruction be issued to regulate the use of Council vehicles.
